Autograph – Thomas Telford, Pioneering Engineer ‘The Colossus of Roads’ outstanding autograph letter signed to his friend the Bristol clergyman the Rev Mr Ellicombe, dated June 19th 1820 in which he provides a detailed itinerary of all of his greatest English and Welsh engineering achievements as well as other landmarks of the Industrial Revolution – listing them in order so that his correspondent may make a ‘grand tour’, 4pp 4to, with integral address leaf bearing a free frank of H Farnell, one seal tear repaired , otherwise in excellent condition. This is unquestionably one of the finest letters of Thomas Telford to be offered in auction in recent years. Ellicombe had evidently written to Telford suggesting that he take a ‘grand tour’ of Telford’s achievements and in reply Telford writes: ‘...Taking it for granted you wish to see works of art on a large scale, I advise you to proceed up the valley of the Severn...’ He then lists the itinerary beginning with the Iron Bridge in Coalbrookdale and the great inclined plane. He tells his correspondent to ask Sir James Thomson of the Calcot Iron Works, who will show him round. The next port of call is Telford’s own world famous Chirk and Pontcysyllte aqueducts on the Llangollen Canal : ‘...the aqueducts are worth your attentive examination – be sure to go along them and down to the river sides and look up to them ...next proceed along the Holyhead Road, thro’ the vale of Llangollen at the head of which there is some good Road making ...proceed to the town of Conway...see...a new bridge and a remarkably fine pass...where we have cut down rock 30 feet and built embankment walls 50 feet...’ He then guides his correspondent to Betwys-y-Coed where he will see ‘ an iron bridge over the River Conway which is new in its kind and worth your attention...proceed along new made roads through the majestic Pass of Lake Ogwen, the most romantic Pass in North Wales...’ After directing him past the great slate quarries ‘ one of the most extraordinary walks of the present day’ he then concludes the tour at the Menai Bridge, then under construction ‘...ask for Mr Provis who will show you the Menai Bridge works and any other matters you wish...’ It is extraordinary to say the least to find a letter in which a great engineer lists in such detail some of his most famous achievements.
