An Oak Thirty Hour Single Hand Longcase Clock with Unusual Dial, signed Joseph Butterworth, Fecit, circa 1730, the oak case with flat top pediment, hood with columns to the sides, wavy shaped trunk door with marquetry star medallion, plain rectangular plinth, very fine 11-inch square brass dial with silvered chapter ring signed, the matted dial centre with two arched apertures for date of the month and lunar scale combined with penny moon aperture, four pillar movement with anchor escapement and outside countwheel striking on a bell, 208cm high *Joseph Butterworth of Cawthorne, Barnsley, was probably the son of John Butterworth who was also a clockmaker. Joseph is thought to have succeeded his father around 1720. Only half a dozen longcase clocks are known by Joseph, mostly thirty hour and eight day examples. His dials display very fine engraving and unusual dial layouts. See Loomes (Brian), "Clockmakers of Northern England", page 106
