ORIGINAL SAMPLE CURTAIN DESIGNED FOR THE QUEEN MARY 'WEST WIND' textile W99cm. x Drop 163cm. / 39in. x 64¼in. Provenance: from the Collection of Geoffrey & Lady Rosalie Mander of Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton; John Constable Collection RMS Queen Mary was launched in 1934 and served as a transatlantic liner of the Cunard-White Star line, troop transport and cruise ship. In 1967, she was permanently docked at the port of Long Beach, California, to serve as a hotel and conference centre. She came in at 81,000-tonnes, and as a luxury liner offered first-class passengers fine dining, Turkish baths, and a cinema on weekly crossings between Southampton and New York. Queen Mary also played host to a myriad of celebrity and royal passengers, including the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, playwright Noel Coward, actress Mae West and US president John F Kennedy. The Cunard Affair In 1935, Cunard White Star Ltd. invited Grant along with other artists to submit designs for the furnishing for the new flagship liner RMS Queen Mary. Grant was commissioned to paint three panels for a lounge as well as suggest colour schemes and designs for the carpets and soft furnishings. After a visit from Benjamin Morris, the American architect of the main public rooms, and Mr Leach who worked for the contractors, the designs were approved, and a contract was agreed. Grant spent the summer in Rome, using the time to concentrate on half size studies of his panels. On returning to England however, he discovered that the English architect overseeing the Queen Mary decoration had cancelled his carpet and soft furnishing designs, and on writing to Mr Leach for an explanation discovered furthermore that the Director had asked for the size of the panels, and the scale of the large female figures, to be reduced. Grant, deeply upset, replied to Leach pointing out that the designs had been submitted for approval more than three months previously. He went on to say: I consider it rather late in the day to criticize my choice of subject... I have been working since the end of May on my designs, given up all other work, and put myself at considerable expense in consequence. Duncan Grant to Mr Leach, 21 September 1935, as quoted in Francis Spalding's biography of Duncan Grant On receiving Grant's letter, Leach and the architect visited his studio, and Grant agreed to modify the size of his figures. In February 1936, Duncan's panels were completed and installed, and, incredibly at this late stage, rejected again by Cunard's Chairman Sir Percy Bates as ill-suited to the purpose of the room and the type of fashionable clientele he hoped to attract royalty, film stars, and business magnates. Although he received payment for the panels, Grant, dumbfounded, demanded their return and compensation for damage to his reputation. Cunard refused his demands but did not reckon on Grant's following or his powerful and loyal friends who immediately leapt to his defence. Letters of protest arrived at Cunard from such important figures as Directors and Trustees of the Tate, the National Gallery, and the V&A. The 'unholy row', as it later became described, even reached Kenneth Clark, the Director of the National Gallery at the time and, a supporter of Grant, was on good terms with the King and promised to rouse His Majesty's interest in the debate. The widespread press coverage pushed Cunard into returning the items and paying compensation to the artist. Despite the support and positive reception of the designs when they were exhibited, Grant's reputation never fully recovered after the publicity surrounding the Cunard affair. It is believed that the curtain came into the ownership of Geoffrey & Lady Rosalie Mander of Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton, when the rejected designs were returned to Grant and, some sold off piecemeal in the late 1930s.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE IMPERIAL SILK KESI 'DOUBLE-DRAGON' WALL HANGINGQianlongThe impressive panel finely woven in gold and colourful threads with a pair of confronted ferocious five-clawed dragons, the scaly creatures framed by flaring horns and flowing mane, enclosing a Shou character and bat medallion, all on a dense ground of trailing five-coloured clouds on a midnight-blue ground, mounted.307cm (120 1/2in) wide x 195cm (76 6/8in) high.Footnotes:清乾隆 御製緙絲雙龍捧壽掛屏Provenance: Sotheby's London, 14 May 2008, lot 679An English private collection來源:倫敦蘇富比,2008年5月14日,拍品編號679英國私人收藏Superbly woven and impressive in its exceptionally large size, this magnificent panel is a splendid testament to the scale and opulence of the Qianlong Court. The exquisite tapestry wold have probably been hung in one of the ceremonial halls for a special occasions, likely the Emperor's birthday, as suggested by the ferocious five-clawed dragons alternating with Shou characters, the wan symbols and the lingzhi fungi resting on bats: these auspicious designs convey the rebus Wan Wan Shou which may be translated as 'May you live for 10,000 years', the Imperial birthday greeting reserved for the Emperor. Large hangings with Imperial dragon imagery were used throughout the throne rooms and palaces of the Forbidden City, displaying the same symbolic colouration and celestial landscape imagery employed on Court robes. As with throne cushions, the designs on major Court hangings were specified by Court artisans of the Ju-i-kuan, and the actual fabrication occurred in one of the Court-administered textile workshops; see J.Vollmer, Imperial Silks. Ch'ing Dynasty Textiles in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MA, 2000, p.949-951.In Han Chinese thought, the five-clawed dragon was the quintessential symbol of Imperial power, embodying royalty and dominion. Capable of flying high in the sky and diving back into the sea, dragons were regarded in China as intermediaries between Heaven and Earth and empowered with extraordinary powers that compared with those of the Emperors. In conjunction with the flaming pearl, the dragon formed the visual metaphor of the good ruler who behaved wisely for the well-being of his subjects. Sumptuous silks decorated with dragons thus therefore, facilitated the Manchus' transformation of their image in the eyes of the Han populations to legitimate rulers of China. The style of the powerful dragons decorating the present panel recalls the creatures adoring Imperial Court robes of the Qianlong period. See the side dragons decorating the lower part of a blue-ground kesi 'dragon' robe, late 18th century, illustrated by J.Vollmer, Imperial Silks. Ch'ing Dynasty Textiles in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MA, 2000, p.141, no.41.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

H.M.S. INVINCIBLE: GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS, 1906 manuscript on linen, large folding title with yard stamp for 'Sir W.G. Armstong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd' dated 16.3.06 and comprising 16 large 1/16in: 1ft scale folding profile plans, signature at beginning and end of Eng. Lieut. Frank Goodwin of the 'Invincible', bound with contemporary sheep (head and foot of spine worn) -- 8 x 5¼in. (20.3 x 13.5cm.)Footnote: Admiral Fisher's concept of the battle cruiser was brought to fruition by the completion of H.M.S. Invincible in March of 1908. Laid down with her sister ships Inflexible and Indomitable in 1906, Invincible was the first to enter service. Each 530 feet long, displacing 17,250 tons, these were the initial trio of battle cruisers equivalent to the Dreadnought, though the Invincible class was built for speed. A logical successor to the previous classes of armoured cruisers, these new cruisers had all-round improvements in speed, gun power and range, with no sacrifice in protection. Judged harshly later on, the only drawback was the cost to build, which was nearly 50 per cent more than the Dreadnought class. Able to reach 25 knots, these cruisers were impressively armed with eight 12in. guns. Sent to seek and destroy von Spee's squadron, Invincible and Inflexible met the opposing forces off the Falklands on 8 December 1914, when the German armoured cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were sunk. Invincible then joined the Grand Fleet in March 1915 and was made flagship to the 3rd Battle Cruiser Squadron in May. At Jutland, Rear-Admiral Hood led his ships into action just before 6.30 p.m. on 31 May and Invincible was hit several times in a few minutes. One shell hit the 'Q' turret causing the magazine to explode, which broke the ship in two. She sank immediately and only five of the ship's company of 1,031 survived.

Krupp guns supported by 23 further guns of assorted calibres and manned by a crew of 423 officers and men. Her first task on commissioning was to take part in Queen Victoria's International Fleet Review off Spithead to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee before hurrying off to blockade Crete during Greco-Turkish War that year. After a series of training cruises, she was laid up in 1906 with only the occasional ceremonial duty to fulfil. Briefly recommissioned during the Second Balkan War, she was put back to ordinary again by March 1913. When WWI broke out she was attached to the 5th Division and sent to defend the naval base at Cattaro, but could not elevate her guns sufficiently. Remaining there anyway as a deterrent, she was eventually sent in 1917 to serve as a guard ship at Trieste. Whilst there she went and bombarded Italian gun emplacements at Cortellazo with some success. Determined to avenge this, the Italians mounted a torpedo attack and successfully sank Wien on 10th December 1917 with the loss of 45 men.
