THE PERSONAL FIELD BINOCULARS OF COLONEL PATRICK ANTHONY PORTEOUS, V.C. (1918-2000) Awarded the Victoria Cross, Operation Cauldron, Dieppe, August 26th 1942 whilst attached to Lord Lovett's No.4 Commando, the French & Sons brown leather case, stamped 'P.A. Porteous', containing a pair of American Bausch & Lomb 6 x 30 field glasses, bearing War Department arrow devices, thought to have been carried by Major Porteous on the raid, together with related family photographs, newspaper cuttings and ephemera.Provenance: Gifted to Patrick Porteous's close friend Flying Officer Peter Duncan Morris, Patrick being the best man at Peter's wedding in London during the Second World War, thence by descent, written clarification provided.London Gazette 2nd October 1942War Office, 2nd October 1942.The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of The VICTORIA CROSS to: -Captain (temporary Major) Patrick Anthony Porteous (73033), Royal Regiment of Artillery (Fleet, Hants.).At Dieppe on the 19th August 1942, Major Porteous was detailed to act as Liaison Officer between the two detachments whose task was to assault the heavy coast defence guns.In the initial assault Major Porteous, working with the smaller of the two detachments, was shot at close range through the hand, the bullet passing through his palm and entering his upper arm. Undaunted, Major Porteous closed with his assailant, succeeded in disarming him and killed him with his own bayonet thereby saving the life of a British Sergeant on whom the German had turned his aim.In the meantime, the larger detachment was held up, and the officer leading this detachment was killed and the Troop Sergeant-Major fell seriously wounded. Almost immediately afterwards the only other officer of the detachment was also killed.Major Porteous, without hesitation and in the face of a withering fire, dashed across the open ground to take over the command of this detachment. Rallying them, he led them in a charge which carried the German position at the point of the bayonet and was severely wounded for the second time. Though shot through the thigh he continued to the final objective where he eventually collapsed from loss of blood after the last of the guns had been destroyed.Major Porteous's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to a duty which was supplementary to the role originally assigned to him, was an inspiration to the whole detachment.Operation Cauldron as the assault on Dieppe was code-named, was the biggest raid of the Second World War; the attacking force of nearly 6,000 men was drawn from the 2nd Canadian Division and three British Commandos. The aim was to see if it was possible to capture a port on the French coast prior to a full-scale invasion. In the event, the raid proved such a disaster that on D-Day two years later landings on the open beaches were preferred. No 4 Commando, in which Porteous was serving, was the only unit to capture its objective. The Canadians, in the centre of the assault, had never been in action before, and to their dismay found that their tanks were unable to negotiate the stony beach; they were cut to pieces by fire from carefully sited strongpoints that had been tunnelled out of the cliff.When the landing force withdrew, it had suffered 3,670 casualties, lost 29 tanks, 106 aircraft and a destroyer. The Germans had lost 591 men. No 4 Commando, commanded by the intrepid Lord Lovat, numbered 252 soldiers. It landed three and a half miles west of the main attack and advanced in two sections.One was to make its way up a river valley, then climb a slope, push on through a wood, overcome defended positions and demolish the six-gun German battery which had been sited at Varengeville. The other section of the Commandos was to make a slightly more direct approach on the target. Porteous, then a temporary Captain, was liaison officer between the two groups.The Commandos crept forward in the dark and destroyed barbed wire, telephone lines and some German defences, and succeeded in crossing a minefield. When daylight came they were confronted by 35 German assault troops, whom they killed, but others soon took their place and the Commandos began to lose men too.During the initial assault on the battery, Porteous found himself with the smaller of the two detachments. An elderly Frenchwoman who had witnessed part of the action presented each of the surviving Commandos with a newly laid egg, a much-appreciated gift, eggs being scarce in England at that time.If the battery at Varengeville had not been destroyed, casualties among shipping and the main attacking force would have been even greater than they were. The battery was stubbornly defended by 250 Germans, behind concrete, wire, landmines, mortars and concealed machine gun posts. One hundred and fifty Germans were killed.Luck played its part. As the Commandos secured their objective, a squadron of Messerschmitt's swept in low overhead - but took the Commandos for Germans. The British waved cheerfully at them and were relieved to receive a wave back from the squadron leader. Porteous received news of his award from his mother while in hospital.The citation for Porteous's VC stated: "Captain Porteous's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to duty . . . was an inspiration to the whole detachment." SAM BOUGH R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1822-1878) FIREWORKS OVER EDINBURGH 10TH MARCH 1863 Signed and indistinctly dated, inscribed on a contemporary label verso 'The Marriage of the Prince of Wales', oil on panel 24cm x 54.5cm (9.5in x 21.5in) Note: There is a contemporary cutting from The Courant newspaper verso dated March 16, 1863 which states 'We had the pleasure of seeing in Mr Bough's studio on Saturday last, a small sketch in oils of the splendid illuminations which gave such universal satisfaction on Tuesday evening. The sketch is taken from the Calton Hill; and the long line of Princes Street filled with a living tide of happy and good humoured sightseers; the deep valley between the Old and New Town; the Scott Monument; the steep slope of the Castle bank blazing with padelle (sic), the grand old fortress itself with its battlements and embrasures lit up with flickering flames; the spire of St.Giles with its coronets of coloured lights and the beautiful outlines of the dome of St.George's defined by long lines of pure white light are all brought before us within the space of a foot square ......No artist in our school is so well fitted as Mr Bough to depict 'The festal city's blaze'. Considered to be one of the most influential and prolific Scottish landscape painters of the 19th century, Sam Bough was a self-taught artist who spent much of his career working in Scotland. Born in 1822 in Carlisle, Bough settled in Manchester where he worked as a scene painter in the Theatre Royal. After moving to Glasgow he continued to paint whilst working at the New Princes Theatre. Bough's reputation as a topographical and landscape painter grew during the 1850's, and by the time he resettled in Edinburgh he had established himself as a successful landscape artist. Whilst living in the capital he created some of his most important paintings. Fireworks over Edinburgh 10th March 1863 masterfully depicts the city amidst its celebrations of the marriage of Prince Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Bough's experience of working as a theatre scene painter is reflected through the confidence by which he works in a small scale and effortlessly captures the fleeing atmospheric effects. Sketched from the top of Calton Hill, the painting is both a celebration of the wedding and the city itself. The firework display illuminates the city's landmarks including the fortress, Scott Monument and spires of St. Giles Cathedral. Bough's interest in the depiction of the changing effects of light is reflected through the dramatic representation of the fiery night sky over the city, whilst in the foreground a tide of sightseers adds to the sense of vitality to the scene. Bough's restless energy is revealed through his expressive colouring which effortlessly captures the mood of the joyous event. His spontaneity, loose technique and interest in capturing the fleeting atmospheric effects establishes him as an important predecessor of the Scottish Impressionists, paving the way for the development towards a freer, plein air style. Contemporary historical records reveal the extent to which this Royal Wedding was a national celebration. In the English village of Goudhurst, there was a full day of public celebrations, starting with the 'distribution of meat to the widowers, widows, sick poor and aged,' followed by a procession, different servings of tea and refreshments, and a large bonfire in the evening. In the week following the wedding, a whole ox was roasted on the Plain, and the meat distributed to over 400 people in the course of the next few days. A rib from the ox remains in the collection of the Goudhurst historical society. The sale of this striking painting coincides with another Royal wedding, that of the Prince of Wales and Meghan Markle on 19th May 2018.

Rivolta, Chester, early 19th century With open triangular pediment and marquetry rosette over double-line strung baluster outline upright applied with arch-glazed Fahrenheit scale thermometer flanked by conch shell motifs, the 8 inch circular silvered register signed A. Rivolta, Chester to centre within concentric scale annotated in barometric inches with the usual observations to circumference and glazed cast brass bezel, the rounded base with further marquetry rosette, 96.5cm (38ins) high. Provenance: Private collection, Hampshire (ref. B173); purchased from these rooms 7th September 2010 (lot 32) for £220 hammer. A. Rivolta is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working in Chester circa 1815-45.
Y A Queen Anne eight-day longcase clock movement with 10.25 inch dial Donning, Petworth, early 18th century, now in a later burr veneered case with barometer The five finned pillar inside countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum, the 10.25 inch square brass dial with ringed winding holes, calendar aperture and subsidiary seconds dial to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with cruciform half-hour markers, Arabic five minutes to outer track and signed Donning, Petworth to lower margin, with pierced blued steel hands and unusual acanthus scroll and fruiting swag cast spandrels applied to angles, now in purpose-made case applied with fine burr veneers (probably amboyna) with crisp ogee and cavetto moulded cornice over plain frieze and glazed hinged dial aperture flanked by columns with brass caps and bases and with rectangular side windows to hood, the trunk with concave throat moulding over rectangular door incorporating swollen centre section to accommodate a circular 7 inch silvered brass barometer scale calibrated for barometric inches, with usual observations and inscribed JOS.H SOMALVICO & CO., Hatton Garden, LONDON to centre within cast brass glazed bezel fitted with a recording pointer, the rear of the door incorporating mercury syphon-tube mechanism enclosed behind a further narrow hinged door, on ebony-line bordered plinth base incorporating cavetto moulded skirt, 211cm (83ins) high. The likely maker of the movement and dial of the current lot, William Donning, is recorded in Loomes, Brian Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700 as working in Petworth, Sussex in around 1710-20; Loomes also notes that a William Donning was buried in the town in 1705.Joseph Somalvico and Company, the makers of the barometer mechanism now incorporated into the trunk door of the present clock, are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS as working from 2 Hatton Garden, London, 1840-67. A large musket with indistinct lettering to top of barrel, length approx 204cm (af). CONDITION REPORT Condition issues throughout, the stock is only tied to the barrel towards the firing end with numerous breaks, splits and losses, the ram rod has been broken in two and has also suffered losses, the stock is heavily worn with deep gouges, scratches, areas of damage and repair throughout, the metal mounts and barrel have heavy wear and pitting, also sections lost, some corrosion, and a large loss to the butt plate which is loose, generally in need of large scale restoration.
