AFTER JOHANNES BLAEU "Ducatus Eborancensis pars Occidentalis, the West Riding of Yorkeshire", hand-coloured engraved map, double sided, with decorative cartouche, armorial crests and mileage scale, 43 cm x 54 cm CONDITION REPORTS Map shows brown spotting throughout, is quite yellowed/browned generally, there is a 4 cm crease in the border of the left bottom corner, there is some slight general lifting/creasing to the paper under the glass, there is another crease above the title on the left corner running from the bottom up towards the title "Yorkshire" approx. 5 cm. In a reasonably modern frame with some knocks and bumps from general wear throughout, top right corner is coming apart where the two pieces join together and needs re-securing.

Wing 630A. Scarce, no copies recorded at auction. “The first complete duplex slide rule was made in 1657 by Seth Partridge. The rule consisted of two strips of wood held together by bridging cleats with a third strip sliding freely between them. This rule carried the numbers and trigonometric scales on both faces.” (Derrenberger, A History of the Slide Rule, April 1939). (1).

(detached) and addn. title (both foxed), double-page eng. notice ‘To the Subscribers’, patterned textured free endpapers, vellum pastedowns, front pastedown with monogram ‘CC’ painted in blue (possibly that of Cedric Chivers), a.e.g., early 19th c. blue morocco, spine lightly faded, gilt rule decorated raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth compartments, remainder with dotted line lattice, date lettered at foot, covers with double fillet and dotted line border filled with dotted fish scale design, each compartment containing a large dot tool, double fillets on edges, gilt dec. turn-ins, 12mo in 6s. Hinton (John). [The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure., 1765 - 73], thirty-four (of 39) double page uncoloured engraved strip road maps, old folds, slight creasing, modern half calf with contrasting morocco label to spine, slim upright 4to. Chubb CCXXVI, Beresiner p.114. The maps are clearly based on John Ogilby’s ‘Britannia’ of 1675 but are of a much larger scale than most other 18th century road and route maps. Hinton’s road maps have no reference to an engraver or author. Perhaps Hinton considered the authorship unnecessary as he was already known as the publisher of the two dominant English cartographers of the 18th century, Thomas Kitchin and Emaunuel Bowen as well as being the publisher of ‘The Universal Magazine’.
