The Movement signed Raymond, London.The case6ft 2.5inches high and surmounted by a shallow arched cresting over a ripple-moulded cornice and large glazed side panels, the circular brass bezel flanked by canted front corners, over a similar trunk with long glazed door within a brass edge, on a panel base with applied moulding, all raised on a double apron.The dial 11 inch one-piece circular dial with outer minute track enclosing a large Arabic subsidiary seconds dial and curved Roman hour aperture, signed below the centre 'Willm. Atglen: Schiffer Publishing, Figs 6-12, 6-13.This historic regulator was the beginning of William Hardy's development of the spring pallet escapement. Using a movement supplied by Raymond, Hardy added his prototype spring pallet escapement to the backplate. Although the escapement has now been removed, all of the evidence exists to prove the original layout. The pendulum too is original - the slot and pin for the original escapement remain as testament to the remarkable escapement.The Precision Pendulum Clock in England from the later Years of the Eighteenth Century. Andrew King.During the eighteenth century there was a constant drive to improve the precision of pendulum clocks. Much effort was expended on the further development of temperature compensating pendulums by exploiting the different expansion rates of metals, notably brass or zinc in partnership with steel. However, it was the mercury pendulum which predominated. Mercury pendulums were never entirely ideal due to the slow reaction of a large mass of mercury in a container of either glass or steel. This was not improved upon until the next century, in 1891, when Sigmund Reifler (1847-1912) patented his invention of mercury contained within the pendulum rod itself where the reaction to the environment was far more sensitive.Developments in escapements were rather slow as well. Richard Townley (1629-1707) and Thomas Tompion (1639-1713) invented the dead beat escapement in 1675, further exploited by George Graham (1673-1751) and others. , the dead beat escapement becoming the predominant choice for regulators.Although there were always isolated attempts to design a variant it was from the middle years of the century that ideas moved towards gravity escapements. Thomas Mudge (1715-1794) invented his gravity escapement in the early 1760s, this seminal concept became the inspiration of other gravity and spring pallet escapements. Alexander Cumming (1732-1814) produced a more complex version of Mudge's design illustrated and described in his publication, The Elements of Clock and Watch Work (1766). Around the same time there was another advancement which had a profound influence.In 1760 the first successful marine timekeeper became a reality with John Harrison's (1693-1776) Watch,'H4' soon to be proven on two voyages to the West Indies. Harrison's life's work proving the practicality of a marine timekeeper within the confines of a large watch. His publication in 1767 of 'The Principles of Mr Harrison's Timekeeper' provided inspiration to others to take up the baton. Even if the publication was obtuse, there were certain enlightening fundamental factors within the concept for the initiated. The initiated included John Arnold (1736-1799) who developed his first marine timekeeper over the next four years. This was undoubtedly inspired by Harrison but redesigned into what became the basis of the modern marine chronometer. The heart of the instrument was the eponymous spring detent escapement controversially invented by Thomas Earnshaw (1749-1829) in 1781, but patented by Arnold in 1782. Although marine chronometers were not widely used for many years they were certainly very well known within the clock making community. Requiring skill in manufacture and equal skill in care and maintenance, the spring detent escapement became the success story in marine chronometry. The concept was not lost on clockmakers. The almost frictionless feature of the spring detent itself requiring no lubrication, an ideal worth pursuing. Clockmakers in both England and France became involved in experimenting with spring pallet and gravity escapements. William Hardy (d.1830) was certainly established in London by at least as early as 1800. His quest for improved precision timekeeping in pendulum clocks led to his experimenting with various designs before his invention of his spring pallet escapement which was first fitted to this regulator, supplied by Raymond, in July 1806. This clock was designed by Hardy who probably provided the cutters for the wheels and pinions for Raymond's use. Raymond's origins remain obscure, and he was only employed by Hardy for this one clock. Hardy subsequently employed the renowned Thomas Leyland to make all future regulators. It is quite clear in this instance that Hardy himself certainly made the cutters for the wheels and pinions for the current lot.With the new escapement fitted together with the newly made mercury pendulum, tests showed such promise over the following five months that Hardy wrote to George Gilpin (c1755-1810), secretary to the Board of Longitude, on the 8th January 1807, introducing himself and describing what he now believed to be a potentially superior timekeeper. He explained that over a three month trial period his regulator had a gaining rate of only four tenths of a second a day. He described to Gilpin how he had experimented with various designs but the latest, the spring pallet variant was showing the most promising results.Hardy, with a bold confidence, asked if his regulator could be submitted to the Commissioners of the Board of Longitude for their consideration, further commenting that he would be 'thankful' if they would advance his request to the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne (1732-1811) to provide a more stringent trial at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Four months later another letter from Hardy to George Gilpin made it clear that the Commissioners had indeed consulted Maskelyne and that a trial had been agreed to take place at the Observatory. Following a Board meeting, Maskelyne visited Hardy to see ... A unique and previously unrecorded mid 19th century engraved and gilt brass-mounted, coromandel calendar timepiece with long duration movement and thermometerRetailed by Howell James and Co, supplied by Thomas Cole, London. The French movement by Achille Brocot, No. 2803The case:veneered in richly grained coromandel, with darker sections used on the plinth mouldings and frames for the side panels, surmounted by a crisply engraved gilt-brass cupola on a plinth set at a 45 degree angle and decorated all over with engraved palmettes and interlocking latticework, on a beaded base, over curved shoulders to the canted corners, each corner set with a male or female term figure, the men with winged helmets, (representing Mercury), the women holding their own hair, (possibly representing Opportunity?), the stepped moulded base with heavy gilt brass band, (the original adjustable bun feet lacking, and now sold with replacement scroll feet, removed for the purposes of illustration, but accompanying the lot), the two arched glazed sides mounted with remarkable cut and engraved brass panels displaying a central urn of flowers within an exotic niche with anthemion border and quatrefoil arch framing a pair of crossed palm trees.The dial:the arched silvered dial measuring 12.5cms x 27cms (5ins x 10.5ins) with typical finely cut and finished blued steel hands reading against a Roman chapter ring with minute track framing an engraved centre of quartered anthemions, the mid section of the dial plate engraved with a repeat shaded quatrefoil pattern centred by the polished steel winding square shrouded by a shaped gilt brass escutcheon, over a curved glass mercury thermometer with lettered scale (FREEZG. - TEMPE. - SUMR. - BLOOD.- FEVER.) and the manual calendar table of engraved panels numbered 1-31, reading against a manually rotated day-of-the-week drum, flanked by engraved tendrils. The movement:The French long-duration movement by Achille Brocot, using his special jewelled deadbeat escapement behind the dial and driven by five spring barrels to give extended duration, the 12.5 inch long pendulum suspended from the original gilt brass pendulum block mounted on the underside of the cupola section, the brass base panel below mounted with the original sprung pendulum lock, in typical Cole fashion. 63cms (25ins) on the scroll feet. 57.5cms (22.5ins) high without the scroll feet. Footnotes:The two Cole brothers, James Ferguson (1798- 1880) and his younger brother Thomas (1800-1864) made an indelible mark on English horology in the 19th century. J.F.Cole has been dubbed 'The English Breguet' because of the exceptional watches and travelling clocks he produced. Thomas was awarded a medal for 'excellence of taste and design' in the 1862 London Exhibition, and the leader of the jury, Charles Frodsham wrote 'nothing could exceed the beauty of design and good taste of the varied models and general excellence of workmanship.' As well as signing his own name, Thomas was happy to supply various high class retailers.Most of Thomas's output was concentrated on his strut timepieces, usually less than 6 or 7 inches in height and occasionally incorporating manual calendar mechanisms. He also produced a range of 'novelty' timepieces in various forms such as cheval mirrors, mortars, bonbon dishes, candlesticks, inkstands and urns. Larger tripod clocks were also part of his stock. Mantel clocks - as opposed to strut, novelty or tripod clocks - account for a tiny percentage of his output. Hawkins in 'Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking' Sydney, 1975, pp95-101 describes just three. Two of these are in gilt brass, and one is in coromandel. The latter example is illustrated in colour on the front cover of the book. Another coromandel example was sold in these rooms on 8th July 2015, lot 109, for a hammer price of £50,000. The current lot is now the third such clock to come to light; each is unique, suggesting that they were only made in exceptional circumstances, possibly for one of the international exhibitions at which Cole exhibited, 1851 Crystal Palace, 1855 Paris and 1862 London. Glazed sides with pierced and engraved gilt mask. The figures of this clock allude to trade and enterprise - perfect symbols for international exhibitions of the mid 19th century. The figure of Mercury is instantly recognizable by his winged hat, or petasus. One of the twelve Greek gods of Olympus, he also appears in Roman art and was revered by them as the god of Commerce, hence the purse he points to in his raised left hand. RUSELL YOUNG (England, 1959)."Kate Moss" 2015.Mixed media on canvas.Signed, titled and dated on the back.Measurements: 159.5 x 121 cm,; 163 x 124 cm. (frame).Russell Young is a British-American artist known for his large screen-printed paintings with images drawn from recent history and popular culture. His artistic output includes painting, screenprinting, sculpture, installations and film. In the 1990s, Young abandoned photography and directing altogether and began painting in earnest. In 1998 he moved to New York, rented a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and worked on a series of "Combination Paintings," collage assemblages, found objects and street graffiti. In 2001, he began a series called "Pig Portraits". He had acquired the photos of musicians, actors and political figures and blew them up in the form of bold, colorful screen-printed portraits of Sid Vicious, Elvis Presley, Jane Fonda, Malcolm X, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra and Lee Harvey Oswald. "They were intended to be anti-celebrity portraits. I guess to give a nod to my earlier career. As an outlet. But they ended up ... I think they look better than some of the sessions." He first exhibited the Pig Portraits at the Don O'Melveny Gallery in Los Angeles in 2003. The Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas held a retrospective of Young's work in the winter of 2012. He also exhibited a series of large-scale paintings titled Only Anarchists are Pretty in the main gallery. He cut out 1970s photographs of bound women and placed them in large "unimaginable orgies of claustrophobic assemblage" and titled from the council estates of Britain's deprived areas - Thorntree, Nant Peris, the Gorbals. An idea borrowed from Joy Division which names itself after the sex-slavery rooms of Nazi concentration camps, recounted in House of Dolls. In October 2018, Russell Young Superstar, opened at the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art, a former coal yard on the banks of the Huangpu River.

In his works he gave birth to a true epic of the rural world, whose customs, people and work he represented with a profound sense of human dignity. The large-format panel presented here shows the splendid technique of the artist from Burgos, based on a masterly forceful stroke and a warm, richly nuanced chromaticism. In front of a field in his native Castile, a group of four peasants stop their daily chores to have lunch, leaving aside their sickles and other work tools. The four characters, arranged in a circle around the central snack while drinking from a wineskin and breaking a loaf of bread, reveal the sacred and solemn condition sought by Zanetti.Born in Milagros, in the province of Burgos, he moved to León with his family when he was a child. There he held his first exhibition in 1931. Supported by his father, after finishing high school he travels to Madrid for a few months to see exhibitions and visit the Prado Museum. Shortly afterwards he obtained a scholarship to visit Italy, granted by the Provincial Council of León. As a consequence of the Spanish Civil War he went to the Dominican Republic, where he remained until 1960. In Santo Domingo he started, together with other exiled artists, the National School of Fine Arts. During this period he held exhibitions and projects in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States. In 1951 the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation of New York awarded him a grant for a singular project: the creation of a large-scale mural for one of the main spaces of the United Nations headquarters, in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This project definitively catapulted the master from Burgos, and is today considered his most important work both for its symbolic relevance and for its expressiveness and artistic quality. He himself said of this work: "I hope that those who contemplate this mural will realize that peace must be won, not once and forever, but every day, remembering the sufferings of the past and making real what men aspire to for the future". Vela Zanetti also painted other important murals, such as those on historical themes for the Provincial Council of Burgos or the frescoes of the old Ercilia Theater in Barahona, Dominican Republic. He was an academician of San Fernando, and Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Burgos. The Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid held in 2001, under the title "Antológica", a retrospective exhibition on the work of Vela Zanetti, the most important to date. In 2009 an exhibition commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death was held at the Ángeles Penche gallery in Madrid. In short, an important exhibition dedicated to the work of Vela Zanetti, commemorating the centenary of his birth and the most complete anthology of this painter held to date, was held at the Fórum Evolución in Burgos. His works are currently preserved in the funds of the Caja Rural de Burgos and the Vela Zanetti Foundation in León, as well as murals in various cities in Spain, Santo Domingo, the United States, Colombia and Switzerland.
