Lot 1139

After Gerard van Honthorst (c.1619–1621) Adoration of the Christ Child Oil on canvas, 80cm by 93.5cm In fully restored condition. Stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. The surface is somewhat flattened and the paint thin in places as a result of the restoration process. Small amount of small-scale white splashes to surface which would appear to be easily removable. Minor rubbing/abrasion to parts of upper edge, mostly right hand side and corner. Varying sized areas of stable craquelure. The outlining and shadows to denote the architectural pillar to background upper left hand side has received a degree of strengthening, with further evidence of retouching of old, widely spaced craquelure across the angel’s wing and within the lower part of the architectural pillar. Further relatively sporadic retouches to the hair of the far left hand side angel and the face of the second angel nearest the Christ child on the left hand side. Further fairly sporadic retouches across the flesh and body of the Christ child, following a formation which would suggest infilling to old craquelure. The upper folded part of the cloth that the Christ child lays upon held in the Madonna's left hand shows signs of consistent overpainting. Strengthening to the folds within the Madonna's garment at lower shoulder height and fairly sporadic retouches to her face. No immediate evidence of restoration to the face of Joseph but the overall look would suggest perhaps a level of general intervention? It is also likely that other areas may well have received restoration that is less apparent under a UV light but based on the superficial appearance of the canvas surface in general.

Lot 1085

Alfred de Breanski Snr. (1852-1928)"Llanberis, North Wales"Signed, oil on canvas, 34cm by 59.5cm In restored condition. Slightly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. Surface is slightly flattened, and the paint is thin in places as a result of the restoration process. Enclosed to the reverse of the canvas. Fine and sporadic retouches to the sky on the right hand side. Slightly with further retouches of a similar scale to the left hand side with more consistent strengthening across some of the wispier clouds of a pink and peach tone. Some of the darkest tones and shadows to denote the grassy tufts on the left hand side hillside have received some relatively sporadic retouching. Further delicate retouching and strengthening to denote the outline and shadows of the small stones within the foreground lower left. With further odd sporadic retouching within the receding dark-coloured shale at the edge of the water at which the cattle are drinking. The brown-coloured cow also has a minimal amount of retouching and strengthening to the outline and shadows. Sporadic retouches across the central and right hand side mountains, with some linear strengthening through the outcrop and buildings at the front of these. The largest of the birds just above water level probably strengthened, including each shadow and the smaller birds towards the distance. Retouch to lower right hand corner. Two small retouches above and just left of the signature, no more than 0.5cm across, and another smaller than this 2cm above the 'B', within the water. Signature with some likely strengthening. Otherwise in a stable and highly presentable state. For more information please contact the department.

Further patch of slightly denser retouching or restoration left hand side approximately centre, which is roughly 0.5cm by 2cm in length. Small area of retouching below and marginally across the initials in the lower left hand corner, roughly 0.5cm by 1cm. Some general fine and delicate redrawing and strengthening through the foliage, the outline and partial detailing of the resting horse , the other animals and the figures on the left hand side. Larger patch of denser and more consistent over painting within the darker tones and shadows each side of the standing central figure, mostly at waist height and below. Some likely further delicate redrawing and strengthening to outline etc of the figures engaged in a snowball fight to the right hand side and the buildings beyond. Likely mostly vertical tear with horizontal cross-damage to approximate centre within the upper reaches of the centrally placed tree with evident associated retouching and restoration (see image). Surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Odd minor loss and abrasion to top edge in general due to movement in frame. Small-scale stable craquelure throughout. The surface is slightly flattened and the paint slightly thin in places due to the restoration process, but otherwise in a broadly good and presentable state of presentation.

Fine craquelure throughout but more notably to sky, with odd small area slightly more pronounced (see images). A degree of surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Fairly sporadic retouching of varying sizes throughout sky, somewhat more concentrated top upper left hand corner and along horizon right hand side (see images). Further retouching and strengthening to triangular area in lower left hand corner, which is approximately 30cm on longest side. Sporadic small-scale retouches within the water and the land of the central and lower right hand side area and more sporadically extending from the more concentrated patch on the lower left hand corner, essentially along lower edge to roughly central point. Minimal, less notable retouches to other parts. Some of the structure and branches of the trees, especially on the left hand side and central area, are possibly strengthened, in addition to the roof of the building far right and some of the masonry and architecture in general, etc. Otherwise in a stable and presentable state of preservation.

Areas of isolated, varying sized craquelure. Scattered retouching throughout background. Finer, more delicate retouching and infilling across the face and shoulder/chest area, with the shadowy parts of her chin and neck having received a slightly more consistent approach, presumably to old flaked paint. THE RIGHT STUFF (1983) - Medium-size Bell X-1 Model MiniatureA medium-size Bell X-1 model miniature from Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff. Captain Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) piloted the Bell X-1 successfully, breaking the sound barrier after many other pilots died attempting the same.Often ranked among the greatest historical films of all time, The Right Stuff was nominated for eight Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, of which it won four. In 2013, the Library of Congress inducted it into the National Film Registry for its impact on American culture. Three sizes of X-1 model were designed based on the real-world X-1 blueprints and hours of NASA footage, then crafted by the model shop team at USFX. This medium-size version, the only one of its scale built for the film, was created for shots requiring wire flying, including the "victory roll" sequence shot with high-speed photography. The miniature features a wooden fuselage hand-painted orange with metal and fibreglass detailing,"Glamorous Glennis" stencilled on one side of the nose cone, and "Bell Aircraft," "6062" and the "star and bar" logo stencilled on both sides. The exterior is intentionally distressed by production with scrapes and scratches to appear exposed to the elements in flight.Following production, this miniature underwent sympathetic repair, including a replacement of its cockpit canopy. However, it retains its original insignia, paint, and other signs of wear and tear from production use. ALIENS (1986) - Light-up Remote-controlled Photo-matched 1/12th-scale APC Model Miniature and Collection of Production MaterialsA light-up remote-controlled model miniature APC from James Cameron's sci-fi action sequel Aliens. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the Colonial Marines were taken to the colony of Hadley's Hope in an APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier), and used the vehicle to travel to the atmosphere processing station, barely escaping with their lives as they were swarmed by dozens of xenomorphs. It is believed that three mechanised APCs were built for the production at different scales: a full-size APC made from an airport plane tug; a 1/6 scale APC with working lights and a rotating gun turret; and this 1/12 scale model, which was used for the scene where the dropship first deposited the APC onto the surface of LV-426 and for the arial shot as the APC enters the atmosphere processor. The miniature's body comprises a vacuum-formed plastic shell over a balsa wood chassis, with a running gear taken from a radio-controlled car. It was built as lightweight as possible because it had to sit inside the miniature dropship as it descended, and the model unit were wary of damaging the dropship miniature. The model features its original halogen lights on both the front and the back, although one of the front lights no longer illuminates. The strobe light on the top of the APC above the cockpit was removed after production but the wiring is still present. The gun turret can be manually positioned to rotate or moved to the back of the vehicle, as it does in the film when moving through low doors, and mounting holes for its alternative positions are present. The miniature is fully remote-controlled and can reach speeds of 20mph. It is accompanied by the original remote-control unit. There is a switch on the underside of the model to activate the electronics. The APC has undergone some sympathetic restoration since the production wrapped, including the replacement of one of the cannon barrels and some of the wheel cover tabs; these are a different colour to the original components to highlight their replacement. The tyres are production-made back-ups as the originals degraded since production. The APC is accompanied by four spare, production-made tyres and four brass hubcaps, which were originally conceived to be part of the model but were deemed too heavy for use. Also included are four modern tyres, carefully cast from a production original, which can be swapped in to drive the APC and avoid damage to the originals.A miniature light and grill are also present; these appeared in the film on the two larger APC models, but not on this one. They were originally affixed to its top - the registration points can still be seen - but were removed to allow greater clearance as it left the dropship. The lot also includes a 106-page final-draft script dated "September 1985" and featuring a crew member's name handwritten on the card cover; 12 miniature floor tiles for the USS Sulaco and elevator miniature sets; a "Bug Stomper" crew jumper (size "M") and jacket (size "L"); 30 previously unpublished behind-the-scenes photographs of this and the other APC and dropship miniatures, including one photograph which this model photo-matches to; five call sheets; eight shooting schedules; a 15-page list of "Special Photographic Effects"; four pages of simple storyboards attached to a notes page; a production memo; and printed concept drawings of both the dropship and the APC. The crew items have some minor staining from age and use. The lot is also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from a senior special effects technician on the production who has reviewed and authenticated the APC. Dimensions: 62 cm x 23 cm x 39 cm (24 1/2" x 9" x 15 1/4") Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see special shipping notice in the Buyer's Guide.Contains mechanical components; see mechanical notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: £150,000 - 300,000 M View all lots from ALIENS (1986)View all lots from ALIEN - ALL ITEMSBidding for this lot will end on Thursday, November 9th.
