It was the start of an ambitious partnership and was soon joined by the American watch producer Hamilton, which had established a major stake in the Büren watch company. The prototypes were promising and the newly named Calibre 11 'Chronomatic' movement; a symbiosis between 'chronograph' and 'automatic' exceeded all expectations. Jack Heuer actually preferred 'automatic chronograph' so gave the name 'Chronomatic' to Breitling. On all Heuer watches 'Chronomatic' was soon replaced by the individual model name. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The pushers had a fluted design and were more integrated in the case and on the manual wind Carrera the crown remained on the right side. Larger minute and hour hands and a striking orange chronograph hand completed the new more colourful appearance. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Heuer. A stainless steel manual wind chronograph wristwatchModel: Carrera 'Red'Reference: 3647TDate: Circa 1965Movement: 17-jewel Valjoux Cal.92 manual wind, stamped MNDial: Silvered, applied polished baton hour markers with luminous tips, red outer tachymetre scale with raised black 1/5th second divisions, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for seconds and 45 minute recording, polished pointed baton hands with luminous inserts, centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished round, screw down back, crown flanked by twin chronograph pushers, No.73977Strap/Bracelet: Associated black leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 35mmFootnotes:With the launch of the Autavia in 1962, Jack Heuer was already looking for a second all chronograph line to quickly expand the portfolio. The new timepiece should be easy to read, anti-magnetic and shock- and waterproof. Development started early in 1962 and the Heuer 'Carrera' was launched to the public a year later. The name 'Carrera' was simple, easy to pronounce, understood in various languages and evoked imagery of adventure, danger and heroism. The first Heuer Carreras can be identified by the ED.HEUER&CO.SA signature on their inner case backs and movements. Soon after the merger with Leonidas to Heuer-Leonidas in late 1964 the markings changed to HEUER-LEONIDAS SA. Hence the overall production time of Carreras with these Ed Heuer marks was only for six months. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

In the Heuer catalogue the Monza was described as a special limited edition watch, delivered in a miniature red racing helmet to celebrate Niki Lauda's 1975 Formula 1 title. The case design of the Monza was inspired by the Carrera automatic chronograph and was available either in chrome or black anodized cases. The Monza was meant to attract a younger target group with its stylish look and big holes in the racing strap. The current example is in New Old Stock condition. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Heuer. A rare black PVD coated stainless steel automatic calendar chronograph wristwatchModel: MontrealReference: 110.501NDate: Circa 1976Movement: 17-jewel Cal.12 automaticDial: Black, applied luminous baton hour markers, white outer 1/5th second divisions, raised outer tachymeter and pulsation scales, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, white pointed baton hands with luminous inserts, white centre chronograph handCase: Black PVD coated form, screw down back, signed crown at 9, twin fluted chronograph pushers at 2 and 4Strap/Bracelet: Black racing leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 42mmFootnotes:Heuer launched the first Montreal models in 1972. The references 110503 W, B, N for luminous white, blue and black are shown in the 1972 Heuer catalogue. The Heuer Montreal was a good fit for an expansion beyond the northern borders of the US. Heuer provided time keeping expertise for the 1976 Olympic Games also at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from 1978. Gilles Villeneuve driving for the Heuer sponsored Ferrari team in 1978 was the first Canadian to win the home Grand Prix. The Heuer Montreal is a large watch reflecting well the trend of the 1970's. The case on the black PVD seems even larger with its thickly coated finish. Powered by the proven Calibre 12 automatic movement, the steel chronograph pushers are on the right side, whilst the steel winding crown is embedded in a protective recessed notch on the left. The dials of the new reference differs from the 1972 model. The steel indexes have been replaced by all luminous filed ones and the former contrastive 1/5 scale ring had the same colour as the dial. The PVD Montreal was shown first in the 1976 Heuer catalogue and the Heuer Montreal was discontinued a year later. It is rare to have a black PVD coated watch in such good condition. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Heuer. In the Heuer catalogue it was described as a special limited edition watch. The case design was inspired by the Carrera automatic chronograph and was available either in chrome or black cases. The first Monza generation was provided exclusively with a Calibre 15 and characteristic small second-hand stood at 10 o'clock. The name 'Monza' above the classical Heuer Logo in the upper part of the dial was a contrast to the Autavia, Carrera and Calculator models using the Calibre 15, where the name was put at 9 o'clock. The dial was surrounded by a pulse- and tachymeter scale, both very important for the world of motor sports. On Monza models, reference and serial numbers were engraved to the case back different from other Heuer model series where they are often between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock. The Monza was meant to attract a younger target group with its stylish look. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare and unusual stainless steel automatic calendar chronograph bracelet watchModel: KentuckyReference: 750.703Date: Circa 1977Movement: 17-jewel Valjoux Cal.7750 automaticDial: Black, applied polished baton hour markers with white accents and luminous tips, white outer 1/5th second divisions, raised outer tachymetre scale, subsidiary dials at 6, 9 and 12 for seconds, 30 minute and 12 hour recording, date and date apertures at 3, white baton hands with luminous inserts, white centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, two screws at 5 and 7, crown flanked by twin chronograph pushers, No.388278Strap/Bracelet: Fitted brushed graduated linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding claspSigned: Case & movementSize: 39mmFootnotes:The Kentucky was produced by Heuer in 1977 and was another move away from the traditional car roots. Heuer. A rare stainless steel automatic calendar chronograph wristwatchModel: VeronaReference: 110.213NDate: Circa 1978Movement: 17-jewel Cal.12 automaticDial: Gloss black, applied polished faceted baton hour markers with white accents, white outer 1/5th second divisions with luminous dot five minute markers, raised tachymetre scale, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for 30 minute and 12 hour recording, date aperture at 6, white baton hands with luminous inserts, white centre chronograph handCase: Brushed tonneau form, screw down back, crown at 9, twin chronograph pushers at 2 and 4, No.377882Strap/Bracelet: Associated black leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 38mmFootnotes:Heuer launched the Verona in the 1978/79 catalogue, but much to the delight of the mechanical chronograph lovers it was introduced with a Calibre 12 automatic movement. The brushed case was paragon of elegance and was reminiscent of the chronographs of the 1950's. It had a polished steel or gold bezel, which contrasted nicely with the brushed case finish and this was specific to the Verona. Fine hands and thin indices matched the dress watch appearance and the reference and serial number, often found between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock, were engraved on the case back.As the Verona was only shown in the 1978 and 1979 Heuer catalogues it is a very rare piece. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
