Natural History: Framed Extinct Passenger Pigeon Feathers (Ectopistes migratorius), a small group of Passenger Pigeon feathers, mounted against a black & white print of a bird sat in a tree, frame size 16cm by 19.5cm. The passenger pigeon or wild pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) is an extinct species of pigeon that was endemic to North America. Its common name is derived from the French word passager, meaning ''passing by'', due to the migratory habits of the species. Passenger pigeons were hunted by Native Americans, but hunting intensified after the arrival of Europeans, particularly in the 19th century. Pigeon meat was commercialized as cheap food, resulting in hunting on a massive scale for many decades. There were several other factors contributing to the decline and subsequent extinction of the species, including shrinking of the large breeding populations necessary for preservation of the species and widespread deforestation, which destroyed its habitat. A slow decline between about 1800 and 1870 was followed by a rapid decline between 1870 and 1890. The last confirmed wild bird is thought to have been shot in 1901.
sand cast aluminium, signed and numbered 10/10 to underside 12 x 25.5cmFootnote: Provenance: The John Ady Collection Writing in 1952, the critic and art historian, Sir Herbert Read, coined the term ‘the Geometry of Fear Sculptors’ to describe the most recent cohort of artists occupying the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The work of these artists reflected the anxieties of a post-war society through their use of sharp, distended, extra-terrestrial forms. Among this group, whose members included Lynn Chadwick, William Turnbull, Reg Butler, and Kenneth Armitage, was Geoffrey Clarke, who is today remembered as one of the most experimental and innovative British sculptors of the 20th century. By the time of the Venice Biennale, in 1952, Clarke had graduated from the Royal College of Art and was beginning to embark upon a decade of architectural and ecclesiastical sculptural commissions, many of which were monumental in their scale. Unlike his peers, who laboured over clay models before casting in bronze or iron, Clarke had to find ways to work economically and efficiently, and instead made his models in polystyrene before sand casting in aluminium and welding the constituent parts of his works together. The present lot, a maquette of a much larger work, is typical of Clarke’s rough-hewn aesthetic and pioneering use of material. The present lot will be sold for the benefit of Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge
signed and dated 'Paul Day 1997' to the left-hand side, terracotta 34.5 x 40 x 16cmFootnote: Chiefly working in terracotta, resin and bronze, British sculptor, Paul Day, has established a peculiarly singular aesthetic dialect in contemporary sculpture. With an unusual and, at times, unsettling approach to perspective, scale, and composition, Day’s highly stylised works defy any traditional means of categorisation. Noted for his keen observation of architectural and human forms, Day has received commissions throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States, with The Meeting Place at St Pancras, London, The Battle of Britain Monument at Victoria Embankment, London, and The Iraq & Afghanistan Memorial at the Victoria Embankment Gardens, London, being among his best-known works.Condition report: A repaired diagonal break across the top left corner, otherwise good.

Print historical detail: The air war fought throughout World War II in the night skies above Europe raged six long years. RAF Hurricanes sent up to intercept the Luftwaffe's nightly blitz on British cities had no more equipment than the fighters that fought the Battle of Britain during the day, but as the scale of nightly conflict developed, detection and navigation aids primitive by today's standards were at the cutting edge of World War II aviation technology. As the air war progressed the intensity of the RAFs nightly raids grew to epic proportions, and the Luftwaffe night fighters became a critical last line of defence as their cities were pounded from above. By 1944 the Luftwaffe was operating sophisticated systems coordinating radar, searchlights and flak batteries, enabling effective guidance to increasingly wily aircrews flying equipment laden aircraft. But the RAF had in turn developed their own detection equipment, and the nightly aerial contests between fighters and bombers were desperate affairs. Night fighter pilots were men of special calibre, requiring a blend of all the best piloting and navigational qualities combined with patience, determination, and no small element of cunning. They were hunters in the purest sense, constantly honing their skills, and pitting their wits against a formidable foe. The young aircrews of the Luftwaffe fought a brave but losing battle in defence of their homeland, but their dedication never faltered, and their bravery is legend. Robert Taylor pays tribute to this courageous and skilled group of flyers with his new painting Duel in the Dark. It is August 1944. As Lancaster heavy bombers of 106 Squadron approach the target, Major Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer, Kommandeur of IV. NJG1 and the Luftwaffes top scoring night fighter pilot, makes a daring attack passing feet below the mighty four engine aircraft. Flying his Me110 night fighter among the flak and searchlights he has scored hits on the bombers outer starboard engine. While his gunner fiercely returns fire from the bombers front turret gunner, the night fighter Ace will slip into the shadows before selecting another quarry. His nights work is not yet done.
