Mrs Janet Taylor, 104 The Minories, London - a Victorian rosewood stick barometer, having signed ivory scale and neighbouring ivory thermometer dial to a plain case, 97cm.Note: Janet Taylor (1804-1870) was one of only a handful of women working as scientific instrument makers in 19th century London and established her own Nautical Academy at 104 Minories in the 1830s. She invented and patented a 'Mariner's Calculator' in 1834 to establish the true time and altitude while at sea, which unfortunately was turned down by the Admiralty for being too delicate for the 'clumsy fingers of seamen' . Nevertheless her many publications and inventions garnered her awards from the kings of Prussia and Holland, as well as the Pope for her contribution to the maritime community, and the Admiralty awarded her a Civil List pension towards the end of her life. A night telescope made by Taylor is in the Greenwich National Maritime Museum, and other works are held in science museums and library collections around the world. Condition report: No mercury in main tube. Some greying to ivory scale. All rosewood excellent.

1977 Land Rover Series III 4x4 Station WagonRegistration no. SFJ 441RChassis no. 9213632AOdometer reading: 85,200MoT expiry date: 22/09/2021•Present ownership since 2016•Partially restored at time of purchase•Restoration completed by an Aston Martin specialist•Interior believed mostly originalInspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial scepticism, and in the course of more than 60 years in production this supremely versatile vehicle would prove itself adaptable to innumerable civilian and military roles. A Series III model on the 88' wheelbase, this 6/7-seater Land Rover Station Wagon was purchased by the vendor in 2016. The Series III had been introduced in 1971 and would prove to be one of the longest-lived models. Mechanical changes were relatively few, the major improvements being an all-synchromesh gearbox and a bigger clutch, the most obvious departure from the preceding IIA being an extensively revised and up-rated interior. The vehicle was in a partially restored state when purchased with necessary body work and paint completed, and we are advised by the vendor that the subsequent mechanical and electrical work was duly completed by a well-known Aston Martin specialist. The vendor rates the engine as excellent for starting and running, and describes the running gear as in very good condition throughout, while the black vinyl interior is believed to be mostly original. Finished in pale green with cream roof and matching wheels, this well presented 'Landie' is offered with a V5C document. The history file includes a Heritage Certificate and details of significant sums spent by the vendor to bring the vehicle up to its current standard.
