British School (17th century)Portrait of a lady, Barbara (Widman) O'Reilly (according to inscription), half length, in a feigned oval Oil on canvas, 68cm by 56cm The original canvas has rounded corners, and it has been laid on a lining canvas, with canvas inserts at each corner. The lining canvas has a thick seam at the reverse, and an old paper label adhered. The lining is fairly stiff, but lacking in tension and there are six keys missing. The canvas is undulating slightly, including a ridge down the right hand side and in the middle of the top edge. The oval edges of the original canvas are exposed where filling material and overpaint between it and the corner inserts have flaked. The paint and ground over the corner inserts has flaked, and is not stable, and there are unrestored losses in places. The paper covering the tacking margins is visible along the bottom edge and in places at the left side. There is a feint stretcher bar mark vertically and horizontally through the centre of the painting from a previous stretcher. There is brittle age and impact craquelure throughout, slighly elevated but currently stable. It appears that the painting has had a history of flaking and small scale losses - with tiny flakes missing to the flesh tones. Due to the thick obscuring varnish, it is difficult to see what precisely is going on in the darker passages, but the uneven surface suggests some losses and elevation. There are likely several campaigns of overpaint, particularly to the background and drapery, but again, due to the obscuring varnish it the extent can't be seen, but there is thick overpaint visible at the joins with the canvas inserts particularly to the bottom right corner. There are small scale restored losses scattered. There has been some abrasion and thinning of the paint, most apparent in the darker passages of drapery, the face and the hair. The inscription has been strengthened. There is overpaint to long scratches and small losses in the neck and chest. The picture has been partly cleaned in the past, leaving mottled yellow old varnish and ingrained dirt - particularly evident in the face. There is a very thick, glossy upper varnish layer, and a few minor scuffs and scratches and surface accretions. Provenance: From a private client in York who is downsizing.
A Mahogany Striking Table Clock, Early 19th Century and Later, case with top carrying handle, side fish scale frets, ivory pull repeat cord, front and back doors with ivory escutcheons, later 8-inch silvered convex dial bearing a later inscription Sawkins, Southampton, twin fusee movement with an anchor escapement and striking on a bell, engraved movement backplate signed Sawkins Southampton 45cm high over handleWith Non-Transferable Standard Ivory Exemption Declaration Number UC33E3RJ Case has been cleaned, top side of the case with small cracks in parts, later dial is discoloured in parts, dial is bearing a later inscription Sawkins Southampton, hands are rubbed, back door is slightly bowed to the top left hand side corner, movement in going order. movement needs a new bell, not striking correctly. With pendulum.
M* Cortazzi (19th Century) After Carlo Dolci (1616–1686) Italian Allegory of poetry Indistinctly inscribed/signed verso, oil on panel, 54cm by 41cm A thick panel comprising four unevenly sized boards. The panel has assumed a convex curvature, but is being held under a little tension from old nails at the sides and the outer edges of the bottom. The nails have damaged the back of the panel in places. There is an approx 3 inch chanel cut into the bottom of the panel. There are a few old wormholes and old daubs of plaster-type material at some of the joins, which has cracked. Spotty mould at the reverse. From the face, the slight movement in the joins is visible, with some raised cracks at the top and bottom edges, including a 4.5cm raised crack with associated flaking and minor loss of paint and ground at the middle right of the top edge, and a raised crack in the sitter's shoulder - approx 8cm. There is also a 1inch split to the bottom of the panel which has cracked the paint through the cover of the book. There is a finescale brittle age craquelure throughout, not elevated and currently stable. There is fine scale retraction of the paint associated with drying problems and resinous additions to the paint. This is textured and scatters the light, mostly to the darker passages and glazed areas in the background around the figure and the features including the eyes and parts of the hair and draper.Minor scuffs and rubs and small losses of paint at all edges from contact with the rebate. Further small, minor unrestored losses and a series of small dents in the hair. It is difficult to see the darkest passages due to the fine scale cracking and retraction, but the lighter passages of paint look in good condition with no abrasion apparent. There is a thick old yellowed varnish, slightly broken up in places and a thick layer of surface dirt and accretions including dark flyspotting and white splashes in the face and a bigger brown blob to the collar. Very matte surface. The old carved and gilded Florentine frame has numerous losses to the gilding and gesso and a couple of small losses to the carving. Dirty with a brown layer in places and the corners opened and misaligned. See images.

William Henry Hunt OWS (1790-1864)"Sunday Afternoon"Signed, watercolour heightened with white, 28.5cm by 33cm Provenance: Dutton Manor, LancashireThomas Agnew & Sons, ManchesterA good, even picture plane. Fine scale cracking and micro-flaking to some of the thicker, bodied areas of white paint particularly in the curtains (see images). A small nick with raised edges to the bottom of the white ribbon on the sitter's chest. A small white scuff to the skirt. Some light timestaining/darkening of the paper. There appears to have been an object on the chest of drawers that has been scratched/painted out - residues of the colour are still visible. Fairly mottled background, possibly technique?
