Artocarpus integrifolius (Bread Fruit Tree), circa 1815-20, fine large-scale watercolour on laid paper, watermarked Budgen & Willmott 1812, heightened with white bodycolour and gum arabic, inscribed with title in a contemporary manuscript hand in brown ink to lower left 'Artocarpus integrifolius (Bread fruit tree)', pale mount-staining, sheet size 54 x 41.5 cm (21.25 x 16.25 ins), modern frame, glazed (Qty: 1)The Bread Fruit tree originates from New Guinea and the Philippines, early spreading to Hawaii and the rest of Polynesia as a 'canoe plant'. It was recognised as an important staple food by Sir Joseph Banks during the first expedition of Captain James Cook in 1769, and Banks proposed to King George II to send a special expedition to Tahiti to transport the fruit to the West Indies. This led to the ill-fated voyage of HMS Bounty under Captain William Bligh in 1787, reaching Tahiti in late October 1788, too late to harvest the crop. When the ship eventually set sail on the return voyage, the crew mutinied and cast Bligh and the officers adrift, on a perilous and remarkable voyage of survival that covered 3,600 miles in 41 days. The present work may have been executed as a botanical specimen by a British naval officer or naturalist, destined for examination back in England.

The present work was possibly created by a British naval officer or naturalist during the period of upheaval in the region, following Sir Stamford Raffles' invasion of Java in 1811, and the formation of British settlements at Melville island and Raffles Bay off Northern Australia between 1824 and 1828.

The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 tranferred control of the Moluccas to the British, and helped to establish the trading colony of Singapore, at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, following the interventions of Sir Stamford Raffles. The present work dates from around this period, and may have been sent back to England as a botanical depiction of this important commodity.

After Emmanuel Frémiet, (French 1824 - 1910), a pair of patinated bronze equestrian models, Le Chef Gaulois (Vercingetorix), and Cavalier Romain, both portrayed in stationary posture with spears held upright; the naturalistically cast rectangular bases inscribed E.FREMIET in the maquette and respectively titled to the sides 42cm high, 29cm long, and 41cm high, 28cm long respectively overall PROVENANCE: Previously in the collection of the late Professor Charles Reginald Dodwell, Pilkington Professor of History of Art and Director of Whitworth Gallery, Manchester University 1966-89; and thence by descent CATALOGUE NOTES: Frémiet specialised in small-scale bronzes of animals and also of soldiers and equestrian figures. His 1.5m high Cavalier Romain was first exhibited at the Salon in Paris in 1866 and Frémiet immediately went on to produce smaller variations on this theme As for Vercingetorix (82 - 46 BC), he was a leader of the Gauls during the late stages of Caesar's Gallic wars. He was defeated at the Batlle of Alesia and gave himself to the Roman army to save the majority of his troops. The Romans held him prisoner for five years, before parading him through Rome and executing him on Julius Caesar's orders Please note, the estimate for this lot is £500-700 and has been misprinted in the catalogue.

Vincenzo Alfano, (Italian, ca. 1854 - 1897), a patinated bronze model of a boy with a cat and a mouse, after a model by Gesualdo Gatti (Italian, ca. 1855-1893); the nude youth portrayed laughing, seated on a stylised tree trunk, looking down towards the lurching cat on his right arm, and the mouse perched on his left hand 27 cm high, 13 cm wide CATALOGUE NOTES: The sculptor Vincenzo Alfano, known for his realist portrayals of the people of his native Naples, is thought to have seen Gesualdo Gatti's playful group depicting a boy with a cat and a mouse at the Naples National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1877. He was so fond of the model that he started replicating it on a smaller scale, adding his characteristic looseness to this previously more polished, formal work

Isaak Duchemin, (French, fl. mid 19th century) and after the Antique, a patinated bronze model of the Faun with Clappers, late 19th century, cast after the Antique, the figure portrayed in dance, a cymbal held in each hand, his right foot atop a scabellum, the oval base inscribed Duchemin in the maquette, atop a convent Siena marble socle with beaded band 61cm high overall CATALOGUE NOTES: The marble original of the Faun with Clappers resides in the Uffizi Galleries, Florence, and indeed was first recorded in that city by Albert Rubens (son of the Dutch master) in 1665, having seen the piece in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. It had been moved to the Tribuna of the Uffizi by 1688. The model was always a popular one, being light hearted and playful, and was therefore much reproduced from the Renaissance onwards. A full-scale bronze version was made by Soldani for Prince Liechtenstein in 1695 and again for the Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace, and small versions were produced by Zoffoli and Righetti, -and indeed by many others ever since
