Michael Landy b. 1963 UNTITLED (FROM SCRAPHEAP SERVICES) cut-out figures from old cans fast food wrapping and household waste held in plexiglas tube height: 95.5cm.; 37.625in. In 1993 Michael Landy set about creating a fictitious cleaning company called Scrapheap Services. What started as a six-month project escalated into a large-scale venture spanning over two years. Provenance Karsten Schubert Ltd. London
Sam Taylor-Wood b. 1967 FIVE REVOLUTIONARY SECONDS VII colour photograph 21 by 200cm.; 8.25 by 7.75in. Executed in 1997 this work is number 2 from an edition of 3. provenance Jay Jopling London Literature Exhibition Catalogue Milan Fondazione Prada Sam Taylor-Wood London 2002 p. 24-25 illustration of another example in colour During a five second time scale Sam Taylor-Wood rotates the camera on its axis the product this single panoramic image which despite being decidedly sequential in nature is ultimately devoid of narrative. In the present work we view the inhabitants comfortable in their setting utterly unaware of one another although confined within a common space. The subjects are divorced from their affluent surrounds held within staged scenarios and left frozen in their fallacious solitude leading us to speculate on how these ambiguities will resolve if they ever do. The artist described the method behind her work as breaking "... down a scene into its basic building blocks. First the narrative structure is removed then the whole thing is filtered and divided into separate sequences" a technique that prevails in Five Revolutionary Seconds VII.
Carl Andre b. 1935 UNTITLED red slate and sulphur on two cement blocks red slate: 1 by 6.2 by 3cm.; .25 by 2.5 by 1.25in. sulphur: 2.6 by 4.5 by 4cm.; 1 by 1.75 by 1.5in. cement blocks: 6 by 29 by 29cm.; 2.25 by 11.5 by 11.5in. Executed circa 1973. Carl Andre’s method of taking common resources out of their man-made confinements and freeing them to exist as separate entities is perfectly displayed in Untitled. However it is the combination of this technique with the more unusual element of juxtaposing natural and man-made media that makes this work especially interesting. Warmly toned offerings of red slate and yellow sulphur are placed at the centre of each cement slab transforming their blocks into pedestals and highlighting the cement’s rough monochromatic traits in comparison to their own more organic qualities. Not wanting to detract from the inherent attributes of his materials the scale of Andre’s work generally does not extend far beyond the natural height of its medium provoking us to regard the work's order setting and individual characteristics. Untitled is no exception. The work is not imposing but rather something for the observer to contemplate admire and enjoy; and whilst the slabs stand together they hold their own space maintaining the functional aloofness that underlies all of Andre’s sculpture. ½
