The Breitling Bentley Mulliner limited editions are a reflection of another significant partnership, that of Bentley and the famous coach builder, Mulliner. Mulliner, the famous coach builder that can be traced back to 1559, have been working with Bentley Motors for decades. They established themselves as a leader in their field with a tradition of bespoke craftsmanship. In 1923 Mulliner crafted a bespoke 3 litre Two-seater for Bentley and then in 1952, they built the revolutionary R-Type Continental. Today they operate as Bentley’s personal commissioning division. Alex Grey (American, b. 1953). Graphite on paper drawing depicting a couple sensually embracing overlaid by a geometric form. Pencil signed and dated 1991 along the lower right. Two strips of paper have been taped to either side of the original sheet as the scale increased as the artist drew. Framed by the artist.This drawing is a study for "Tantra," a painting of the same name. In the painting, the points where the lovers meet are painted in a fiery orange which quickly fade to deep purple. The painting is featured on page 66 of his book "Transfigurations" and is described by the artist as thus: "Locked in an embrace of love with Allyson, I sensed the skin on the backs of our bodies dissolving into a field of deep blue fire fluid. The blue felt like an ocean of understanding permeated by love, a field of unbounded energy that was our essential nature and to which we briefly return during the ecstatic ego oblivion of sex. It seemed as if the skin on the front of our bodies was the surface tension of ego, a bounding line of flesh that we could use to merge and transcend energetically by becoming synchronous with the primal depth of our heart union, which is symbolized by the enveloping aura of the latticelike Mobius egg."Sight; height: 12 in x width: 10 in. Framed; height: 18 1/2 in x width: 16 1/2 in x depth: 1 in.Condition: There are two strips of paper taped to either side of the original sheet, original to the artistic process. There are some creases, handling marks, and areas of graphite transfer along the corners, most noticeable along the upper corners, likely original to the artist process. There is a small light brown area of soiling along the lower corner of the central sheet. The work is floated in frame on a nonacidic mat. Framed under plexiglass; light wear to the frame. Not inspected out of frame.

Dumas et E. van de Putte, 'The French Naturalist Painters', Milan, 2012, cat. no.63, illus. on cover and p.5 and 152 Note: Balande’s masterpiece, ‘Camping, 1934’ is a perfect encapsulation of everyday joy, displaying the optimism of the interwar years. Light permeates through every brushstroke of the composition, the gaze of the figures in the foreground directing our view towards the beautiful landscape beyond. Balande was heavily influenced by the bucolic scenes and scale of Puvis de Chavannes, but instead of his classical figures here Balande grounds the work in contemporary life and ideals of family leisure time. The work was exhibited widely during the 1930s and in 1935 led to the artist being awarded 'sociétaire' at the Salon. During its first exhibition, the work was titled 'Campement sur les bords de la Seine', but this was soon changed simply to 'Camping', reflecting the institution of paid holidays in 1936 in France and with it the popularisation of family holidays. Most recently, the work was the centerpiece and cover-work of the exhibition at The Fleming Collection in 2012. Related works are now in major French public collections, including 'Un beau jour d'ete, 1921' (Musée National d'Art Moderne) and 'Improvisation, 1923' (Musée des Beaux-Artes, Pau). The success of these large scale scenes would also lead to public commissions for the cruise liners 'Normandie' and 'De Grasse', as well as a school in the La Rochelle region and the Town Hall at Aubervilliers. A similar work, 'La joie de vivre, 1945' recently sold at auction in Fontainebleau in 2019 for €25,000 hammer.
