Telemachus on the Island of Calypso: A Mid to Late 18th Century Ivory Fan, with a highly extravagant and heavy monture. The wide sticks are carved and pierced, silvered and gilded with intricate shapes and complex design. The central cartouche, bordered in gold, shows a couple together with a winged cherub. To each side, a soldier in armour. All figures are carved in large scale and are surrounded by carved and gilded flowers, decorated ovals, and large scrolls over several sticks, forming hearts. The lower sections of the guards have the symbol of the Sun King. The double paper leaf is painted with the arrival of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope, on Calypso's island, Ogygia. Telemachus was seeking to find his father who had yet to return home from the Trojan War. See Homer's ''Odessy''. Calypso was a nymph who had detained Odysseus on her island for seven years, seeking to make him her husband. Telemachus had been guided in his search by the goddess Athena who had disguised herself as the old man Mentor. Here Calypso and her nymphs are shown as three young ladies. The ships are berthed behind. Other vignettes show a water nymph with her stone container, a warrior, perhaps Telemachus again (?), and two couples wearing 18th century dress, in pastoral scenes. The verso is more crudely painted with a landscape in dark colours, and a young couple in 18th century dress, the gentleman playing the flute. The gorge sticks are undecorated. Blue stone to the rivet. Some rubbing to the leaf. Losses to gilding and silvering. A break to the lower section of the upper guard has been repaired. Gilding bright in the gorge, dull elsewhere.
The Bride: A Small and Slender 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, with a double paper leaf, and diamanté in the form of flowers in the rivet. The slender guards are carved, the upper with a vase, a male figure, a tiny bird, flowers and a cornucopia, the lower guard similar, but with a female in place of the male. Central to the gorge is a carved scene of five figures, a couple to the middle, the man crowning his lady with flowers, this vignette flanked by urns on pedestals, then carved hearts, and finally, to the right, a young boy and his dog, to the left another figure. The lower gorge is carved and pierced with an overlapping border. The leaf depicts a young lady simply dressed in white, holding a red rose, seated at her dressing table, two friends wearing colourful dresses attending and perhaps preparing her for her wedding. A large ornately gilded mirror on the table, the latter covered with a white embroidered cloth, together with scent bottles and a cross on a chain necklace, a blue footstool under the bride's feet. To the left a costumed man, perhaps in the Spanish style, playing music. The vignette is boldly bordered in gold, the reserves with fuchsias, convolvulus, butterflies and more flowers, the leaf as a whole bordered in gold. The verso, with a flower border, of roses, convolvulus and leaves, depicts similar flowers on a larger scale. Guard length 26cmClean, quite fresh, no repairs noted, some very very slight yellowing on the verso. Very slight corner edge of the lower guard is missing.
Two Continents: A Fine Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the carved and pierced monture also painted. The guard is decorated with flowers and a butterfly, the gorge sticks elaborately painted and in pairs, some oval lattice work highlighted in gold, small panels with insects and ladybirds, the remainder floral. The double paper leaf is simply painted with a hunter and his dog, in European dress, to the left of two other figures seated on rocks who appear to be wearing robes. Water appears to separate these two images. The very top of the leaf has a floral border, beneath which is a deep panel of intricate découpage, cut in a variety of small scale patterns. The verso is plain. Guard 29cmThe lower edge of the leaf has some damage, to the right the découpage is wrinkled, probably due to humidity, and the section on the left guard has been restored. Some rubbing to the folds, and some repairs seen from the verso. Some warping to two gorge sticks.
Harbour Scene: A Circa 1840-1860 Chinese Fan, Qing Dynasty, with wooden sticks, finely and intricately lacquered in gold on black, the same scenes recto/verso and on the guards. The double paper leaf with three vignettes, depicts a harbour with one main building and several smaller, and a mix of fishing boats and larger sailing craft. The side vignettes depict different gatherings. To the left, a figure seated on a porcelain stool, holding a fixed fan, with others looking on, all with applied painted ivory faces and silk robes. To the right, the figures are listening to a speaker. The verso depicts a large assembly with a tree at the centre. Guard length 28cm. The fan is embellished with long mauve tasselsMonture sound and the sticks are bright, with small scale detail.
The Peacock: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the central feature a large peacock, his features and feathers created with sequins, some details painted, the gold sequins which border the animal being repeated in a much smaller scale to form outlines for meandering flowers, small painted insects and birds circling on both sides. The verso is plain, the embroidery threads evident. The ivory sticks and guards are silvered and gilded, some carving on the upper guards. The gorge sticks are in pairs. With diamanté rivet. Double fabric leaf. Guard length 27cmMany of the leaf folds have been reinforced from the verso. Several other folds are starting to split.
A Simple and Elegant 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, the gorge with small scale lattice work surrounding a central oval containing carved initials and flowers. The guards are carved in panels with small scale flowers, in the Chinese style. The cream double paper leaf has a regular spot feature, these being adhered to the leaf. The verso is the same. Guard length 28cmThe leaf is very dirty on all folds, both on the inner and outer edges. The spots have mainly lost their shine. The leaf has nicks to some folds and a part split just in from the right guard.
