A TOURMALINE AND GOLD BROOCH, BY H. STERN, CIRCA 1970The brooch of gold openwork panel of abstract textured design, set with a central bi-coloured tourmaline, accompanied with a ring of similar design, mounted in 18K gold, signed with maker's marks, brooch length approximately 5cm, ring size KA German Emigrant, Hans Stern (1922-2007) founded H. Stern whilst living in Brazil in 1945, at just 23 years old. While working as a typist for a trading company, he fell in love with precious gemstones and began a small-scale gemstone trading office in Rio de Janeiro; this trading office quickly developed into gemstones cutting and jewellery manufacturing. By 1964, the company became renowned for the creation and promotion of interest in coloured gemstones internationally. Hans Stern was hailed as ‘the king of coloured stones’ by Time Magazine. H. Stern’s interest in fashion led him to organised the first ever jewellery fashion show in Brazil. He was also the only Latin American brand to participate in Victoria and Albert Museum Jewellery Exhibition. It was however, the 1980s launch of the Catherine Deneuve collection, inspired by the muse of Bunuel’s ‘Belle du Jour’, which catapulted H. Stern’s successor and his brand to success and led his brand to win numerous design awards. H. Stern soon became jeweller to the stars with his pieces making regular appearances on Hollywood red carpets. H. Stern is currently the biggest jeweller in Brazil and Latin America, so much so that top fashion editorials such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar have all featured H. Stern’s creations. His brand has come to be one of the greatest recognised jewellery brands in the world. Today Ronaldo and Roberto Stern, the sons of Hans Stern, carry on their father’s legacy, continuing to push the boundaries of jewellery design and share their love and appreciation for precious gemstones.

Studio of Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg R.A. (Strasbourg 1740-1812 London), Noah's Sacrifice, oil on canvas, later laid on board, framed. 123cm by 99cm. Note: De Loutherbourg was a painter, stage designer and illustrator, the son of an engraver and miniaturist. He moved to Paris at the age of 15 where he trained under Carle van Loo and Giovanni Battista Casanova (brother of the famous Venetian adventurer) and painter of battle, hunting and equestrian scenes. During the 1760's he enjoyed some success at the Paris Salon, mainly with landscapes. In 1771 he settled in London armed with an introduction to the actor-manager David Garrick for whom he became a designer of stage sets at Drury Lane. He later launched his own theatrical entertainment, the Eidophusikon. He became an R.A. in 1781 having enjoyed considerable success at Academy exhibitions. In his later work he turned increasingly to history painting including biblical subjects. This coincided with a period in London when a number of large-scale publishing ventures for illustrated books were launched. One of the most famous examples of these handsomely-printed large folio format publications was Macklin's Bible in the 1790's for which de Loutherbourg was commissioned to produce twenty-two paintings one of which was Noah's Sacrifice. The subject work may have been offered at auction by Peter Coxe, Burrell and Foster at Mr. Squibb's Great Rooms Saville (sic) Row, Monday May 5th, 1800, "A Catalogue of a Most Valuable and truly Capital Collection of Modern Paintings......the Property of Mr. Macklin.....comprising in Painting the works of ........Loutherbourg....." with lot 35 listed under "Copies" and described as "Loutherbourg Noah's Sacrifice".
