Late 19th Century lacquered brass spectrometer by Townson and Mercer with 12 inch telescopes, push-pull focusing, the bed plate with silvered scale and vernier, all within a fitted mahogany box with carrying handle to the top, the box 36cm high without the handle. Included with this instrument a prism and Rowland replica diffraction grating. Height of instrument: 28cm (11in).
AIME-JULES DALOU (1838-1902) “Peace" a cast bronze female torso, a study for "Abondance" for the "Triumph of the Republic" on a naturalistic base, first modelled circa 1879-1889, with cast signature "Dalou" and foundry mark, 76cm high. Provenance: Private collection, Dorset. Aime-Jules Dalou's celebrated monumental group, Triomphe de la Republique presides over the Place de la Nation in Paris. The full-scale work is surmounted by a magisterial figure of La Republique bedecked in a Phrygian cap above a lion-pulled chariot surrounded by allegorical figures of Justice, Travail and Abondance.
A LATE GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY BRACKET CLOCK by J. Collingwood, London, the arched case with satinwood stringing surmounted by a square tapering pediment with brass ball finial, on melon-lobed brass feet, white dial with Roman numerals, brass arched "fish scale" panels to the sides, the double fusee movement striking on a bell, with pull repeat. 60cm. Britten in "Old Clocks & Watches and Their Makers" records Collingwood 1747-1816.
A GEORGE II GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLE in the manner of William Kent, with a breche violette marble top with canted corners and projecting rectangular ears at the back, over a frieze carved with stylised acanthus leaves and scrolls and a band of fluting, on acanthus-carved "S"-scroll front legs set at an angle carved with entrelac and scale-work ending in knurled toes and moulded block feet, 122cm wide x 64cm deep x 80.5cm high. Provenance: Probably acquired at auction in London by the late Anthony Boyden in the 1960's or 1970's.
