'Map of India 1881', hand-coloured 19th-century linen-backed map in four parts (North East, South East, South West, North West), with decorative marbled paper and original labels. Complete with original slipcase bearing label for Edward Stanford of London. 'Published under the direction of Lieut. General J. T. Walker, Surveyor General of India, Surveyor General's Office, Calcutta, November 1881'. The map records the original price: 'Uncolored Six Rupees, Colored Eight Rupees'. Produced on a scale of one inch to 32 miles. Printed from a transfer from copperplate with additions on stone. British Raj interest.
δ Canada.- John (Augustus Edwin, 1878-1961) Study of a Canadian Soldier, black chalk on cream wove paper with watermark date of '1916', sheet 455 x 298 mm. (17 7/8 x 11 3/4 in), inscribed on reverse in pen and ink: 'I certify that this drawing is/ by Augustus John and from his studio./ Caspar John.', minor surface dirt and light browning, unframed, circa 1917.⁂ After being deemed physically unfit by the British Army to become an Official War Artist, Augustus John volunteered with the Canadian War Memorials Fund. By 1917 John was in France behind the lines held by the Canadian forces. The present drawing would have been an original study for John's unfinished large-scale work 'The Canadians Opposite Lens', the cartoon of which is now in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. δ This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
Devon.- Donn (Benjamin) A Map of the County of Devon, first edition, printed title, 9pp. list of towns, seats & proprietors and subscribers, double-page engraved key map and 12 double-page maps by Thomas Jefferys, in full contemporary hand-colouring, inset town plans of Exeter and Plymouth uncoloured, some offsetting and occasional soiling, later half calf, rubbed, [Batten & Bennett, The Printed Maps of Devon 44], folio, for the Author, 1765.⁂ The deluxe version of one of the best known large scale county maps due to the 100 guineas award from the Royal Society of Arts, conceived in 1762, Donn's being the first map to receive the award. It was published and sold in a simple twelve-sheet format for one and a half guineas with an extra five shillings for colouring. It was also available in a bound state as here, with a printed title page, index, subscribers list and key map for two guineas plus extra for colouring.
Devon.- Mudge (Lt. Col. William) The Second Part of the General Survey of England and Wales Containing the Whole of Devon and a Portion of the Adjoining Counties, large scale map in eight sections, nos. XX to XVII with piano key border (to perimeter sheets only), with large ornate title in the lower right section laid over the sea area as issued [?], engraved maps, not joined, each section approx. 615 x 915 mm. (24 1/4 x 36 in), dissected and mounted on linen, each section trimmed with light-blue silk, occasional surface dirt and light offsetting, presented in modern green cloth drop-back box, 4to, 1809.
Essex.- Chapman (John) and Peter Andre. A Map of the County of Essex from an Actual Survey, engraved throughout, 26 double-page engraved sheets, including title, list of subscribers and key map, all linen-backed and in full contemporary hand-colouring, occasional light soiling, later red half morocco, gilt, spine gilt with raised bands, [Rodger 120], folio, Colchester, W. Keymer, 1785.⁂ This fine large-scale map shows the county in close detail, including the names of all country houses and cottages, as well as the owner's name in many cases. There are also small inset plans of Colchester and Harwich Harbour.
Duquemin, James, Map, Plan of the Town and Parish of St. Peter Port, Guernsey, surveyed and drawn by James Duquemin. Published for the proprietor by F. Clarke, States Arcade, Guernsey, 1873, scale 400 feet to one inch, printed by Mardon, Son and Hall, Steam Lithographers, Bristol, coloured plan, 39 x 28in. overall.* Condition: Somewhat chipped at edges with small loss to outer printed margin at top left corner, closed tear (approx 18" long), some spotting to edges, fair.
A 17th / 18th century Spanish joined carved walnut side table, the one piece rectangular top over two deep drawers with wine glass carving and iron handles (one replaced), over a scale carved frieze, raised on splayed square tapered supports, 43¾ x 22in. (111 x 56cm.), 26in. (66cm.) high, legs probably reduced in height.

A German porcelain cup and cover, probably Meissen, 19th century, decorated with reserves of pastoral lovers and landscapes, within gilt line and foliage borders, on deep blue grounds, bears marks of crossed swords with stars for Meissen Marcolini period, 8cm high, together with a Spode porcelain pot pourri stand and vase, with a pierced grill cover, decorated overall with flowers on blue and gilt scale grounds, mark for Spode 1166 to base, 8.8cm high (2) pot pourri pot has very fine firing cracks to handles, light wear to gilding, light wear to cover knob, some light wear to standover to cup has poor gilding

For disappointment's not the thing;- Tis pride and passion point the sting. Life is a sea, where storms murt rife; 'Tis folly talks of cloudlefs skies: He who contracts his fwelling fail, Eludes the fury of the gale.', framed and glazed, 51.5 x 35.5cm.
A Henry Hughes & Son 'Husun' sextant, in the original fitted case, with certificate, No 40207, height of case 14cm, width 20cm, depth 20cm. Condition report: Key in box. Four sun filters and Three horizon filters. Very little wear to scale. No star lenses. Generally in good working condition. Needs adjusting.
Friedrich Goldscheider (1845 - 1897) Austrian Art Nouveau Large Terracotta Sculpture In The Form Of A Grecian Maiden, Signed E. Tell A large scale example circa 1890's in terracotta with painted umber and gilt finish. The whole in the form of a seated Grecian maiden draped in golden chiton, her hair elaborately coiled and tied with gold fillets. In her arms she cradles and urn, upon which perches a bird. Impressed artist signature 'E. Tell to bottom right. Impressed factory mark and numbered 3624 14 2, 'Fabrique En Autriche' to bottom centre. Very good condition, 35 inches in height, 15 inches at widest point.
