School of Antonio Canova (1757-1822): A White Marble Bust of Napoleon as Mars Pacificus, numbered 162 to reverse, 74cm high, on a cylindrical marble column with collar to base and square plinth, 132cm high See illustration The present bust is derived from the colossal marble statue of Napoleon as Mars Pacificus currently in Apsley House, London, which was rejected by Napoleon because of the statue's nudity. Canova then produced a bust derived from the full-length original which is now in Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. Subsequently, Canova's Roman studio produced marble versions of the bust and Napoleon's sister Elisa Boneparte Baciocchi, the Duchess of Lucca, established a workshop at the quarries in Carrara that specialised in the reproduction of Imperial marble portraits by sculptors such as Lorenzo Bartolini, Antoine Denis Chaudet and Baron François Bosto. It is recorded that between 1808 and 1814 forty-two Carrara workshop marbles of Canova's bust of Napoleon in colossal and life-size scale were received for sale in Paris and it is possible that the present lot is one of these examples. For an example by Lorenzo Bartolini, signed with initials, see Sotheby's Old Master Sculpture and Works of Art, London, 9.7.15, lot 184. Another anonymous example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, accession no.2015.489

§ Kenneth Rowntree, ARWS (British, 1915-1997) Mlle Manicette Canière signed 'Kenneth Rowntree' (lower left) oil on canvas 54 x 46cm (21 x 18in) Other Notes: 'Mlle Manicette Canière' dates from the earlier years of Rowntree's career, characterised as it is by flat plains, a formalised composition, and bold application of paint. This lack of overt detail and paring down of forms was perhaps influenced by his Quaker roots. Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s, Rowntree infused his work with French influences, having made trips to Gisors in Normandy in 1936, 1938 and 1939. In his earlier triptych, 'Homage to French Culture in the Nineteenth Century' (1938), Rowntree created a colourful tribute to French painting, literature and music on a monumental scale. According to John Milner, this work 'catalogues Rowntree's every French enthusiasm', and is a 'magnificent testament to Rowntree's erudition and delight in French culture'.(John Milner, 'Kenneth Rowntree', Lund Humphries, Aldershot, 2002). 'Mlle Manicette Canière' is not included in a comprehensive catalogue of Rowntree's works compiled by the artist's wife, Diana Buckley, and their son (Tate archives, TGA 200315). Craquelure evident, particularly to the centre of the canvas where vertical line extends across the width of the painting. There is also evidence of extensive cleaning and overpainting to the bottom left, sections under the table cloth, the girl, and approximately six areas directly behind the main figure.
§ Edward Wadsworth (British, 1889-1949) Composition on a Blue Ground II, 1933 tempera on board, under perspex and mounted onto a wooden board 40.50 x 36cm (16 x 14in) Provenance: The collection of Sir Michael Ernest Sadler, KCSI, CB (1861-1943) At some time acquired by Hertfordshire County Council Exhibited: The Brussels International Exposition, British Exhibit of Modern Art, 1935 Literature: Jonathan Black, 'Edward Wadsworth; Form, Feeling and Calculation, The Complete Paintings and Drawings', Philip Wilson Publishers, London, 2005, p.188, cat.no.312 Other Notes: We are grateful to Jonathan Black for his kind assistance with this catalogue entry. Tempera on board with two thin additions of wood at the right and bottom edges. On each side of the work is a screw hole from a previous framing method. There are several dents and losses at the edges of the work with losses to the paint layer. The pink areas of paint have been created by building up the paint layers in a type of 'spattered' technique. These areas are friable which is particularly noticeable where the purple paint has been applied over the top, leading to small scale losses and flaking. The painting is unvarnished. Overall it is in a good condition.
•IVOR ROBERTS-JONES (1913-1996) Sir Winston Churchill, a bronze maquette for the monument in Parliament Square, numbered 143, cast at the same Meridian Bronze Foundry as the original sculpture, with an attractive mid-brown patina, 51cm high, on a square white stone base inscribed "Churchill" (62cm high overall) This iconic maquette is a reduction of the large scale sculpture of Sir Winston Churchill by Roberts-Jones which stands in Parliament Square having been commissioned in 1971. It is said that the artist's friend Sir Kyffin Williams stood in as a model for Churchill. The sculptor's first important commission came from Lord Beaverbrook in 1961 for a bust of Somerset Maugham. Roberts-Jones success and the public acclaim that his statues engendered led to his election as an associate of The Royal Academy. First rights to the sell the bronze were secured by The Library of Imperial History and restricted until December 1976 for owners of the library's 'Collected Works of Winston Churcill'. This bronze comes complete with the Library's 'Limited Edition Portfolio 1976/1977' listing the work for sale at £630. Provenance: Private Collection, Somerset Condition Report: Work appears to be in good condition with no obvious signs of damage or restoration
