Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A hollow-formed ceramic figurine of a soldier in hood and armoured coat with right hand to the chest to accept a model spear; traces of red and white pigment. Ex M D O’Hara collection of Chinese figurines; formed 1980s. During the Tang dynasty burials were constructed and furnished in accordance with restrictive sumptuary regulations that dictated the kind of tomb and quality of grave goods. It was only natural that families of noble rank would wish to copy the Imperial family, both in this life and the next, and so many of them had tomb figures made that would act as servants in the next life and which copied the larger, and more elaborate examples, found in Imperial tombs, though on a lesser scale. 1.6 kg, 29.5cm (11 1/2"). Fine condition.
