Ordine Sacri Romani Imp: ab Ottone III instituti, from Speculum Orbis Terrae, 1593, fine large-scale engraving on four conjoined sheets of laid paper, published in Speculum Orbis Terrae by Gerard de Jode in 1593, with the publisher's name to lower left, generally browned, overall size 79.5 x 56 cm (31.25 x 22 ins) This engraving depicts the nobles entitled to choose German Emperors, as instituted by Otto IV and the Pope, to end the turmoil and quarrelling that occurred after the death of Charles the Great. The highest ranking officials, three ecclesiastical and four lay dignitaries, are followed by the second rank of four dukes and four marquesses, the third of 8 earls, etc. The plate was later acquired by Vrients and from 1603 onwards included in Ortelius's 'Theatrum' and the 'Parergon'.
