Tapestry; Flemish work, 17th century.Wool.Presents restorations.Measurements: 268 x 243 cm.Flemish tapestry made in wool that presents a heraldic motif as the main ornamentation of the work. In the absolute centre we can see the coat of arms dominated only by the presence of a castle and in the upper area, the bell, a knight's helmet. The coat of arms is surrounded by numerous intertwining vegetal and geometric decorations, which are delimited by a square band that separates the inner perimeter of the tapestry frame, which has been designed as a border decorated with garlands. In the 17th century, Flemish tapestries were arguably the most important productions, with many specimens from this period still extant, demonstrating the intricate detail of pattern and colour embodied in pictorial compositions, often on a monumental scale. The success of decorative tapestry may be partly explained by its portability. It is a very common style in Europe, which began to develop in the Middle Ages. Tapestry is relatively fragile and difficult to make, so most historic pieces are intended to hang vertically on a wall, or sometimes horizontally on a piece of furniture such as a table or bed. In some periods smaller pieces, often long and narrow, were made and used as borders for other textiles. European tapestries are therefore usually made to be viewed from one side only, and often have a plain lining added to the back.

After MARCEL BREUER (Hungary, 1902 - United States, 1981).Pair of "Wassily" armchairs, 1960s-70s.Steel and black leather.Good general state of preservation.Measurements: 73 x 78 x 66 cm.Following models by Marcel Breuer. Large armchair with a light, sober and functional structure, based on chromed steel tubes that intertwine to support the upholstered elements (seat, backrest and armrests).Marcel Breuer was a Hungarian architect and designer, one of the main masters of the Modern Movement, who was very interested in modular construction and simple forms. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar at the time when it was directed by Walter Gropius, and later took charge of the furniture workshop there. There he designed the B3 chair, later known as the Wassily chair, made in 1925, the first tubular steel chair in history, which combined the flexible conditions of this material with its ease of large-scale industrial production. Breuer remained at the Bauhaus until 1928, when he settled in Berlin to devote himself to architecture. However, with the rise of Nazism he had to leave Germany, owing to his Jewish origin, and moved first to England in 1933 and later to the United States, where he lived for the rest of his life from 1937 onwards. Today his furniture designs form part of the most important collections in the world, including the MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert in London.

Lot 85

SÈVRES box, 19th century.Enamelled porcelain. With seal.Measurements: 34 x 20 x 20 x 12 cm.Porcelain enamelled box with mainly low-temperature colours, including gilding, a typical aspect of the Sèvres manufacture. The lid is decorated with a rococo-inspired scene depicting ladies and gallant couples in bucolic settings. The decorative details are overlaid with fine gold.Originally founded in Vincennes in 1740, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres was transferred to Vincennes in 1756. One of the leading European porcelain factories, the Manufacture was successively named after different political regimes: royal, imperial and national manufactory. Still active today, the firm continues to produce objects created since 1740, although its current production is largely oriented towards contemporary creation. Up to 1800, the company produced mainly porcelain and soft-paste pieces, both tableware and small-scale ornamental sculpture. In the 19th century, decoration became richer, especially in the context of historicism.

Edition of 200 copies.Publisher: Luna Luna Freizei Hanlagen GMBH and Neve Revue, Hamburg, Germany.Size: 30,6 x 60,8 x 24 cm (open).Keith Haring was an American artist whose pop art and graffiti grew out of the street culture of New York City in the 1980s. Haring's work grew in popularity through his spontaneous drawings on the New York City underground in chalk on black and white advertising space backgrounds. After achieving public recognition, he created large-scale works as murals, and his later work often addressed political and social issues, especially homosexuality and AIDS, through his own iconography. Today Haring's work is held in major private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Bass Museum in Miami; Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne; and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He also created a wide variety of public works, including the infirmary at Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and the second-floor men's room at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in Manhattan, which was later transformed into an office and became known as the Keith Haring Room. In January 2019 an exhibition called "Keith Haring New York" opened at New York Law School in the main building of its Tribeca campus.
