Of socio-historical interest. The diary of the Hon. Anne Claudia Dundas (née Whalley Foot) (1880-1943),  22.01.1915 to 21.02.1915 and a bundle of 24 letters (22.03.195 to 14.04.1915) sent from her at Melville Castle to her husband, the Hon. Kenneth Robert Dundas (1882-1915), who was then undergoing RN training in Blandford. The letters contained in a leather wallet with a photograph of KRD's father, Lord Melville, and a silhouette of Mrs Dundas by Handrup (200 Oxford Street).  The twenty-four loving letters: ‘How did you enjoy your visit to Winston Churchill dear? Did he seem well and pleased with things?’ Crowdy (from BEA) has a new job in England as a captain looking for deserters and Powys-Cobb is ill in London.) KRD’s stepmother, Lady Melville, is tired and frail, but when well, entertains their three-year-old son, Claud, with Beatrix Potter etc.; ‘Yesterday after tea I am afraid he was rather rude and naughty and had to be taken up to the nursery by the butler!’ to whom he was also rude; ‘Every morning he kisses your photograph and says good morning to you dear, and so of course do I. The little fellow is getting very “knowledgeable” as the butler says’; terrified Claud will be rude in front of Lord Melville: ‘your pater would pick him up, lay him on his knee and whack him at once.’  Coon Can is the card game of the moment at the castle and games are played every evening for a 6d jackpot; a new and better looking William replaces old William in the staff; death of Euston Sartorius in France, the only son of Maj. Gen. Euston Sartorius VC and other war news; Could the old service revolver be sold, considering KRD intends buying an automatic pistol, and the proceeds put towards the cost of a moonstone pendant Claudia has her heart set on? 'Filthy lucre' – Lord Melville has come up with the figure of £2.5.0 a week for Claudia and Claud’s keep at Melville – ‘Dearest I honestly don’t know how he has the heart to take this money from his son, as really £1 a week would easily cover the extra cost we must be.’  ‘It will simplify things if the Russians get onto the Hungarian Plains won’t it? Is Peace in sight do you think?’ ‘Your people are very glad you have made your will dear, but I hate to even think of it.’ Visits to Edinburgh - Miss Leslie ‘looks so nice in her grey uniform with its little tippet edged with scarlet.’ ‘I never knew your uncle Henry inherited £65,000!!! clear in the bank, & £7,000 a year when he came in to Melville, and when he died 19 years later not a blessed penny remained, and nothing was in repair or remained to show where the £65,000 had gone.’ Cecil Hutton’s return from the Front. Outside, Lord Melville is having the grounds improved with large-scale shrubbery planting, and shooting bunnies; ‘Sheep, with tremendous long coats, nibble the grass; nannie is busy in the nursery and enjoyed her ride in the brougham’. ‘Sissi ... has bought a ‘Standard’ two-seater and on Sat. drove up and down Regent St. & the instructor did not have to tell her to do anything’.

An Interesting Group of Medals & Uniform, Including a British Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C), Attributed to Lieutenant Garland A York Serving in 34 Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, United States Airforce, group consists US Air medal with 6 oakleaf clusters, US Purple Heart medal, in case of issue, US Distinguished Flying Cross, US European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign medal with 3 bronze stars, US Victory medal and a British Distinguished Flying Cross, reverse dated 1945, in case of issue. All medals unnamed as issued. Lot is accompanied by assorted cloth badges, metal pilots wings by AE Co. Utica NY and a London made Ike jacket with insignia (maker Huntsman, Saville Row), British DFC medal ribbon is attached to the tunic. Also accompanied by aircraft panel instrument and trench art pieces. Often considered one of the unsung heroes of the war the job of the Photo Reconnaissance Squadron was to be the eyes of the army and to gather intelligence in preparation for later operations. 34 Photo Reconnaisance Squadron (34 PRS) was 1 of 6 squadrons forming the Ninth Air Force’s 10th Photo Reconnaissance Group (10 PRG). The groups aircraft of choice was the Lockheed F-5 which was a stripped down version of the famous P-38 and it was equipped with cameras instead of guns. During the Spring of 1944 the Squadron was tasked with an important mission to photograph the beaches of Normandy prior to the invasion. In order to minimise their chances of discovery the missions were flown alone and without escorts. Flying just above the waves to avoid detection the pilots photographed the beaches of Normandy at an altitude of between 15 and 50 feet and with an average speed of 350 knots. These missions were known as ‘dicing’ missions as, like the rolling of dice on a gambling table, you never knew quite how it would turn out. In total 11 of these dicing missions were flown by 10 PRG between 6th May and 20th May 1944 which allowed a scale model of Omaha beach to be produced in preparation for the invasion. Lieutenant York, a member of B-Flight and the youngest pilot in 34 PRS, flew one of these dicing missions on 20th May and when his pictures had been developed it was found that he had photographed the exact section of the Normandy beaches on which the American forces would land, he had photographed all of Omaha and most of Utah beaches. York’s mission was to be that last of the dicing missions and after that all missions were flown at heights of between 15,000 and 30,000 feet. 10 PRG was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for its performance in the dicing sorties with York being awarded the US Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in the missions. Garland York was noted as being a ‘hot’ pilot who had bent a couple of aeroplanes in his time with the squadron, in later life though he said he never felt like a hero because , as a Photo Recon pilot, he was never able to confront the Luftwaffe in the arena of aerial combat that made aces out of so many American fighter pilots. We have been unable to find a confirmation for the British Distinguished Flying Cross, the vendor acquired the group direct from the family of Lieutenant York.

wool, with hessian backing384cm x 95cmProvenance: St. Leonards - Mayfield Chapel, Mayfield, Sussex, England.Footnote: Note: The remains of a medieval palace belonging to the Archbishops of Canterbury was converted into a school, Mayfield School of the Holy Child, by Edward Welby Pugin in 1863-6. This needlework rug originally ran the entire length of the Chapel. Due to the sheer scale of the work, the rug was constructed in small, panelled sections and later stitched together to form the carpet. Hand-stitched by the sisters of Mayfield Chapel, the carpet was produced for Mother Cornelia Connelly, founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. The border has verses from Psalm 112 verses 5 and 6 ET HUMILIA RESPICIT IN CAELO ET IN TERRA/ SUSCITANS A TERRA INOPEM ET DE STERCORE ERIGENS PAUPEREM, translating from Latin as 'Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice/ Raising up the needy from the earth, and lifting up the poor out of the dunghill'. As in other projects, E.W. Pugin continued to use the decorative designs of his father of which this may be one.

Watercolour on graph paper, signed, dated and inscribed lower right C.F.A. VOYSEY/ ARCHITECT/ 11 MELINA PLACE/ GROVE END ROAD/ ST JOHNS WOOD, NW/ SEPT. 1891, oak frame 49cm x 31cmProvenance: C.F.A. Voysey, until his death in 1941, thence by descentThe Fine Art Society, LondonFootnote: Exhibited: The Fine Art Society, in association with Haslam & Whiteway, Architects for a New Age 2008, No. 80Note: As a designer Voysey paid meticulous attention to detail, designing every aspect of a project whether architectural or in the design of furniture, patterns and metalwork. Concerned by the negative impact of industrialization on design, and handicrafts in particular, Voysey became a major proponent of the Arts & Crafts ideals. He set out to create simple but functional items, inspired by the natural world and produced with the spirit of craftsmanship in mind, thereby enriching the lives and homes of everyday Britain. Whilst many of his contemporaries opted to set up small-scale workshops to achieve this, Voysey forged links with an impressive network of commercial manufacturers and retailers, knowing that this would further disseminate these beliefs and allow beautifully designed goods to be accessible to a much larger market. In 1897, Voysey’s output as a pattern designer for fabrics and wallpapers was significant; he signed three contracts with major manufacturers, agreeing to supply thirty original wallpaper designs per year to Essex & Co., ten carpet designs to Tomkinson & Adam, as well as a further ten for Alexander Morton & Co. Two of the designs offered in the proceeding lots feature marks for Tomkinson & Adam and, together with a further two needlework designs, illustrate a period where Voysey’s energy and originality were at their highest. His fabric designs are typically produced on standard graph paper, used for setting up steam-driven looms. Tomkinson & Adam’s looms were American and so specific grids were required for different types of machinery and weaves. These designs, so charming and vivid in their colours, serve as important interpretation tools for the technicians to bring the designs to life, direct from the master’s hand. To ensure quality and that the end-products remained true to Voysey’s intent, he often made several annotations leaving instructions concerning the repeat and colouring of the design for the weavers, as is exemplified in several of the following lots. Interestingly, in lot 147, he notes that the design was sold Stanway, an influential businessman who bought patterns from designers to be made into cloths and various fabrics for sale in his London and Parisian retails outlets. In lot 149, the design for a gas fire, Voysey also displays a strong sense of refinement and elegant proportion in the balanced linear forms, as well as a clear vision for the finished piece as he indicates his deliberate choice of materials in the annotations. In a similar vein to William Morris, Voysey saw nature as his most important source of inspiration, as is clear from these designs. Arguably the motifs most synonymous with his work are the bird, heart and crown, the latter two representing love and loyalty: sentiments which he valued dearly. Rather than copy directly from what he saw, he believed that abstraction and inventiveness from the artist’s imagination was crucial in achieving good ornament. Indeed, it was this belief that set his designs apart from Morris and others. Towards the end of his career his patterns tend to be figurative, as illustrated in the design for ‘The Sower’. Suitably charming and always beautifully coloured, these designs represent the talented mind of one of the most prolific architect designers of his generation.

CHRISTO (Bulgaria, 1935)"Wrapped Monument Vittorio Emanuele II, 1975.Photograph mounted on cardboard. H.C. copy.Enclosed polygraph certificate.Signed and justified in the lower right corner.Measurements: 76 x 56 cm.The monument to the King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II, in Piazza del Duomo, and the monument to Leonardo da Vinci, in Piazza della Scala, were wrapped with polypropylene fabric and red polypropylene rope, in the fall of 1970, in Milan, Italy. The fabric had been sewn in advance according to patterns that allowed for wide folds. The two wrapped monuments could be seen from the center of the Galleria, simultaneously, at each end of the large 19th century vaulted pedestrian passageway.Christo together with Jeanne-Claude a renowned artistic couple of the late 20th century, the wrapped objects of are some of the most extreme examples of modern conceptual art. Christo Valdimirov Javacheff, the primary artist and designer of the duo's projects, studied between 1952 and 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, then spent a year in Prague. In 1957 Christo fled the socialist state and settled in Vienna, from where he traveled to Geneva and finally to Paris, settling in the French capital. His life in Paris was characterized by economic deprivation and social isolation, which was increased by his difficulty in learning the French language. He earned money painting portraits, which he compared to prostitution. Visiting the city's galleries and museums, he was inspired by the work of Joan Miró, Nicholas de Stael, Jackson Pollock, Jean Tinguely and mainly Jean Dubuffet. In January 1958, Christo made his first piece of "wrapped art"; he covered an empty paint jar with a canvas soaked in acrylic. He tied it up and colored it with glue, sand and automobile paint. Christo and Jeanne-Claude met in Paris in November 1958, when he was commissioned to paint a portrait of her mother. Although Jeanne-Claude married another man, she became pregnant by Christo and left her husband after their honeymoon. Despite opposition from Jeanne-Claude's family, the couple married in 1962. By 1959, Christo had changed his approach to wrapped objects. Instead of embellishing the wrapped material with glue and sand, he kept it intact. The following year, he stopped painting altogether and completed his "Inventory" series. In 1961 he tackled what would be his first project with large objects, wrapping barrels in the German port of Cologne. In 1962, as a couple, Christo and Jeanne-Claude tackled their first monumental project, "Rideau de fer" ("Steel Curtain"), as a statement against the Berlin Wall. The work consisted of blocking off Visconti Street over the river with oil barrels. Although Christo was simultaneously holding his first gallery exhibition, it was the Visconti project that made him known in Paris. In 1964 the couple settled in New York, and continued to carry out projects and exhibitions both in the United States and Europe. In 1968 they participated in Documenta 4 in Kassel, and in 1969 they undertook one of their most famous projects, that of wrapping the Little Bay waterfront in Sydney, Australia. Since then, Christo and Jeanne-Claude have undertaken numerous large-scale projects around the world, including "Running fence" and "Wrapped walk".
