Of course the developments for which he will forever be remembered are The Circus, completed in 1764 after his death by his son John Wood The Younger and The Royal Crescent 1767-76, executed by the younger Wood from his father's designs. English School, circa 1762, after Katherine Read (British, 1723-1779) Portrait miniature of Lady Mary Isabella Somerset, later 4th Duchess of Rutland (1756-1831) watercolour on ivory 3½cm (1in) Other Notes: Lady Mary Isabella Somerset was the youngest daughter of Charles Noel Somerset, 4th Duke of Beaufort (1709-56) and Elizabeth Berkeley (1718/19-1799). Mary's father died the year she was born leaving her mother, sister and heir of Norborne Berkelely, 4th Baronet of Botetourt (c.1717-1770), to maintain the family estates. Mary seems to have been very much her mother's daughter and her precocious, determined nature, combined with famous good looks, were the foundations for her later career as a political hostess. In 1775, Mary married Charles Manners, Marquess of Granby, later 4th Duke of Rutland (1754-87), who was a military officer and Whig politician. Mary did much to support her husband's political ambitions and soon became one of the most prominent hostesses of the period, renowned for her good-taste and elegance when canvassing for support. The death of her husband in 1787 did little to affect her career and if anything it brought her closer to the leading political elites, whose favour she would later rely on to secure her family's interests and the future of her son, John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857). Mary distanced herself for the most part from the demanding political social spheres towards the end of her life and died in London in 1831. The present work is a reduced-scale copy of the pastel by Katherine Read (previously attributed to John Russell) in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, painted in 1762.
Walter Langley, RI (British, 1852-1922) Towards the Sea signed lower right "W Langley" watercolour 17 x 12cm (7 x 5in) Provenance: From the collection of Simon Hilton, Cambridge Other Notes: Born in Birmingham, Walter Langley is generally dubbed the pioneer of the Newlyn School, as he was the first of the Newlyn School artists to settle in the village, setting up his studio in 1882. Like many of his fellow Newlyn artists, he had spent time in Brittany before discovering Cornwall, and some of his early Cornish works feature local models wearing the picturesque Breton costume. Langley started his artistic career at the age of fifteen, when he was apprenticed to a Birmingham lithographer. At twenty-one, having completed his apprenticeship, he won a scholarship to South Kensington, where he studied design. Langley returned to Birmingham to continue as a lithographer, but spent his spare time painting and soon gave up lithography to concentrate on this aspect of his work. Although Langley was an accomplished painter in oils, he mainly painted in watercolour, often on a large scale. Using this demanding and difficult medium, he portrayed scenes of everyday life in a small fishing village, highlighting the hardships and tragedies that were commonplace during that period. Langley remained based in West Cornwall throughout his career, and died in Penzance in March 1922. A little loss of colour.
