Northern earthquake.- Porteus (Beilby, Bishop of Chester) A Letter to the inhabitants of Manchester, Macclesfield, and the adjacent parts, on occasion of the late earthquake in those places, first edition, foxed, lightly browned, contemporary wrappers, foxed, 12mo, Chester, Printed by J. Poole, Foregate-Street, [1777].⁂ A rare little work. The earthquake is estimated to have reached 4.4 on the Richter scale, and was widely felt in Manchester, Macclesfield, Preston, Wigan, and Stockport. There was no loss of life and only minor structural damage. Provenance: Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (couple of small marginal ink stamps).

Fuller (John E.) and Aaron Palmer. Fuller's Computing Telegraph, engraved by George G. Smith, double faced circular calculator comprising of a square board surrounding printed scales with central volvelle, original diced leather cover (detached), worn, large 4to, Washington, 1847; together with 2 instruction pamphlets loosely inserted.⁂ Designed by John Emory Fuller (1799-1878) in 1844 and patented in 1845. 'Palmer's Computing Scale' was used to calculate square measures, cubic measures, timber measures, grain measures, liquid measures and interest rates from 3 percent to 10 percent on a daily and monthly basis. Invented by Aaron Palmer and patented in 1843 in Massachusetts, the copyright of which had been purchased by Fuller in 1844 or 1845. This 'computing scale' represents a very early use of the word 'computer' for a device rather than a person.

Nicol, 1797. 2 text volumes and an atlas dated 1796 to the plates, together 3 volumesStaunton was appointed principal secretary to Lord Macartney's embassy to China in 1792 which sought "to improve commercial relations with China, through Canton (Guangzhou), and to establish regular diplomatic relations between the two countries. Though Macartney and Staunton had an audience with the emperor their proposals were rebuffed In China [Staunton] closely observed and noted all that he saw, and during expeditions he was able to collect botanical specimens. His son, George Thomas, then just twelve years old, accompanied him to China as page to Lord Macartney, and was the only member of the mission who bothered to learn Chinese" (DNB). Centre fold, ink line approx 4cm to the 'coat of arms', very light blue paint has run into the 'Cornwall' cartouch, toning throughout as expected, some sporadic (very light) foxing.
