Rory Breslin (b.1963)Artemision Horse StudyBronze on marble plinth base, 71cm high x 74cm long x 28cm wide (28 x 29 x 11'')SignedWith white painted display pedestalEdition 1 of 3This sculpture is a study of the horse's head in one of the most popular and important displays in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the bronze Horse and Jockey Group. The group was found in a shipwreck off Cape Artemision, in North Euboea, which was discovered in 1926. The first parts of the equestrian statue were recovered in 1928, with more pieces found in 1936 and possibly 1937. The statue was reassembled, and after restoration went on display at the Museum in 1972. The Horse and Jockey Group is special in being one of the few original large-scale bronzes securely dated to the Hellenistic period. It is approximately life-size in scale and consists of a horse in mid- gallop, on which is seated a youthful jockey, who looks back over his shoulder. The Horse and Jockey group is unusual in combining an athletic sculpture with an animal. The unknown sculptor of this masterpiece has captured the excitement and vitality of a horserace in mid-action. Some scholars have previously dated the group from the late fourth century B.C. to the first century B.C. The statues have been attributed previously to various sculptors, including Kalamis, Lysippos and the Pergamene school.

2007 Auto Union Type C Pedal Car - Entered from the Gilder Group Collection - No. 28 of 999 produced worldwide Christmas may still be several months away, but will no doubt spring to the mind of many a doting parent when they see this miniature masterpiece - number 28 of just 999 half-size pedal car versions of the all-conquering Auto Union Type C 'Silver Arrow' of the late 1930s. These beautiful mini replicas were built by Audi's fabled Quattro GmbH division and unveiled to great acclaim at the 2006 Paris Salon. Would-be drivers don't require the talent of a Rosemeyer or Stuck, just a pair of willing feet and a body under 1.35 metres tall. The pedal cars were born from Audi's search for a signature piece to spearhead its lifestyle collection. The Type C was already one of the best-selling period models in the company's miniature range and it was realised a pedal car version would ably mirror the company's heritage on a far larger scale. The technical drawings originated in the company's own tool shop and each example comprises no less than 900 components. The spaceframe chassis and bodies were hand-crafted in aluminium and trimmed in leather. There are seven forward speeds, a hydraulic disc brake and wood-rimmed steering wheel that can be removed to aid entry - just like the full-size originals.

A fine 1:4 scale model of a 5 1/2 inch Howitzer, the carriage and limber built as a template at the Bombay Artillery's Gun Carriage Manufactory, Colaba Island, in 1822; brass ordnance 11 inches including cascobel, brass mounted carriage and limber with iron rimmed spoked wheels, the trail bearing brass plaque inscribed 'Captain Thew/ Agent/ 1822 Bombay', further plaque inscribed 'Carriage Howitzer/ brass with Limber/ Heavy 5 1/2 Inch/ Scale 3 inch to a foot', brass number plate 'No 118', ammunition box with partitioned interior, length when assembled approximately 5.5 feet. The British East India Company maintained factories for the local production of the materials of war. In the case of the Bombay Presidency this included a gun carriage manufactory on Old Woman's Island (later Colaba). Captain Robert Thew (a soldier with a distinguished career including action in the battle of Kirkee during the Third Anglo Maratha War) was the company's agent for gun carriages from 1821 to 1827. Like other men in his role he built models of this sort to provide a template to aid India craftsmen in building full sized gun carriages. The origin of the ordnance itself is uncertain, since the carriage factory was not also a foundry, but it's form complies closely to that of contemporary examples of the full sized version, for example: that which may be seen at the Royal Armouries collection, Fort Nelson, Portsmouth. Gregoire Johannes Boonzaier (South African 1909-2005) BLUE ORCHIDS signed and dated 1981; signed and titled on the reverse oil on board 44,5 by 34cm Gregoire Boonzaier was born in 1909 in Cape Town and passed away in 2005. The flower studies PINK HIBISCUS and BLUE ORCHIDS bears the characteristic style of Boonzaier’s use of tremulous outlines used to accent the forms of trees, houses and flowers that is reminiscent of Pieter Wenning’s structural devices. He was influenced by Wenning and the Dutch painters he encountered during his time at The Hague School. According to Scott (1965: 15) Boonzaier was also influenced by European artists such as Braque, Utrillo and Cezanne. The pure browns and greys of Braque appealed to Boonzaier’s own colour sense, whereas his approach to still-life themes occasionally varies with strong tones, pure and romantic with a modern approach. By adopting a wide colour range Boonzaier accomplishes a more romantic expression of mood with a distinctive reality and exuberance. Although he exhibited exceeding talent from an early age and enjoyed a career of outstanding artistic popularity, his most valuable contribution to South African art was undoubtedly his driving effort as chairman of the New Group. Boonzaier has been a valuable influence on a large number of Cape painters, almost singlehandedly establishing a secure market for Cape Impressionism, not only in South Africa, but on an international scale.
