A rare mid 19th Century carved mahogany floorstanding regulator with keyless windingE. Fisher, BathThe arched case with full length glazed door revealing the mercury jar pendulum (now empty) and floral scroll engraving to the top and bottom, over a substantial base with recessed oval panel, applied carved scrolls and block feet. The one piece signed silvered 13.75-inch dial with outer minute track enclosing the recessed subsidiary dials for Arabic seconds (with Observatory marks) and Roman hours. The substantial weight-driven movement with thick (5mm) tapering plates united by four heavy turned pillars secured by eight heavy blued steel screws and collets, the single train with wheels of six crossings, high count pinions and terminating in a deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, triple-screwed to the arbor which is set in endstops, the long polished steel crutch terminating in a right angle with hinged steel arbor carrying the fork to the fine-screw regulation nut over the empty mercury jar pendulum with tapered pointer reading against a silvered beat scale secured to the back board. Wound by pulling on a heavy fusee-type chain emanating from the right hand side of the hood. Together with the small (c.2.75kgs) cylindrical brass weight, the four-spoke pulley and case key. 2.18m (7ft 2ins)Footnotes:Edwin Fisher is first recorded working in Bath in 1819; he is recorded as a watchmaker and a jeweller working at 13 Somerset buildings. At some point he relocated to 14 New Bond Street; an 1833 directory records him at this address. On a trade card, he is styled as a watchmaker, specialising in French watches, chronometers, and repeaters, as well as carrying out repairs to musical works and offering a supply of keys and precious metal chains. Nine years later Fisher had moved again to 13 Abbey Churchyard, though he would stay there only briefly, moving to his final location, 9 Old Bond Street, in 1846. He stopped advertising in Bath in 1866, which is reasonable to suggest as his date of retirement.Another regulator, with a jewelled deadbeat escapement, is known to be by him, as well as a few skeleton clocks. His name and a date of 1839 are also on the hour dial of the Cockshutt church clock; it has been suggested that he carried out some extensive repairs to the clock, possibly including a repair or conversion of the clock's pinwheel escapement, the movement being signed Bullock and Davies of Ellesmere. A turret clock, previously from the Bishop's Palace stable block in Bath, was made entirely by Fisher, and features quarter chimes and a wooden pendulum. None of these clocks have been described as having the peculiar pull-wind system present on the current lot.It is also interesting to note that the ticking of a balloon clock made by Fisher was recorded around 1941, by the BBC at Maida Vale. The recorded ticking was used as a time interval signal on radio broadcasts between programs, to assure listens that their sets had not died, but that a new program was being prepared.British Horological Society (1972) 'A Working Edwin Fisher Clock', Horological Journal, Vol. 115 (3), pg. 29Goodship, G. After Lord Frederick Leighton (British, 1830-1896): A patinated bronze figure of 'The Sluggard'probably early 20th centurythe nude male stretching, on canted square base, bearing signature Fred Leighton to a rear corner, the front inscribed THE SLUGGARD, 52cm highFootnotes:Although perhaps better known as a fashionable Royal Academy painter of the late 19th century, Leighton took up sculpture in the 1870's and today is regarded as the father of New Sculpture in England. Leighton's Sluggard, also known as 'Athlete Awakening from Sleeping', was first executed in 1882. Giuseppe Valona, the Italian model who posed for 'An Athlete Struggling with a Python', was again used for the Sluggard. Edgcumbe Staley described the moment when: 'Giuseppe Valona, the model, a man of fine proportions, weary one day of posing in the studio, threw himself back, stretched out his arms and gave a great yawn. Leighton saw the whole performance and fixed it roughly in clay straight off.'A more refined life-size plaster was later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 and was awarded a medal of honour when it was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle three years later. A bronze cast of this plaster, acquired by Henry Tate in 1896, is now in the Tate Gallery. The Sluggard has obvious parallels with Rodin's 'Age of Bronze', exhibited in 1884 and it was perhaps this work which encouraged Leighton to revive his earlier model. The work later became one of the most popular Victorian statuettes when reduced-scale bronze editions were made by Arthur Leslie Collie and cast by the Singer Foundry.Literature:S. When the Troughton & Simms partnership was established in 1826, Barrow was also working in London, his trade workshop located in Crown Court, Soho. A silver replica of the Open Championship golf trophy ewerGarrard & Co Ltd, London 1985Profuse chased decoration, elongated neck and curved shoulders, the slightly tapering cylindrical body with four panels, one depicting a standing golfer in full swing, knopped pedestal foot, on a three-tiered wood base, each with a plain silver band, in original fitted box, overall height 35.8cm, weight 15ozFootnotes:ProvenanceFrom information provided by the vendor, two-third scale trophies made by Garrard's were traditionally given to the winners of the Open Championship. This example was purchased some 30 years ago directly from a director of the company prior to them being awarded.HistoryThe Open Championship silver claret jug is arguably golf's most famous prize, but it was not awarded to the first Open champion Willie Park in 1860, instead he received the Challenge Belt. However, if a player won the competition on three consecutive years, he could then own the Challenge Belt, which Young Tom Morris achieved in 1868-1870. As such there was no event contested in 1871, as there was no trophy to present and a solution to this was resolved, as detailed from The Open website:Agreement was finally reached on September 11, 1872 between the three clubs that were to host The Open — Prestwick, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. They decided that the Champion would receive a medal and that each of the three clubs would contribute £10 towards the cost of a new trophy, which was to be a silver Claret Jug, instead of another Belt. Its proper name was to be The Golf Champion Trophy. The original trophy was awarded to players annually until 1927. When Walter Hagen won in 1928, he was given a replica and the original was put on permanent display at the clubhouse at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. Champions continue to receive the replica trophy, on which they get their names engraved and get to keep for a year before returning to the R&A upon the conclusion of their reign. Champions receive their own replica to keep. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 165

A wooden dummy model of a 1955 Nikon 'S2 Rangefinder' camera, late 20th century, decorated throughout in black with silvered dials, with a Plexiglas viewer and hand-painted detailing, serial numbers and branding, the removable wooden lens with a Plexiglas window is marked 'NIKON KOGAKU JAPAN no. 408778 NIKKOR-S 1:1.4 f=5 cm', the body marked 'No. 6120155' and period 'NIKON Nippon Kogaku Tokyo' logos,140cm wide74cm deep82cm highEarly camera retailers would have been familiar with the concept of using dummy camera models in their retail establishments - much as with high-end electronic goods on display in stores today - these display versions would have been made to scale, using actual camera casings, but with no internal mechanisms. They would have demonstrated the new designs well to prospective buyers, but as these cameras were expensive items to purchase, the dummies would have meant that retailers would not have had to take their displays down each night for security. Made with almost obsessional attention to detail, these replica cameras are made in wood with textured Rexine coverings, hand-painted dials, branding, trim, and even transparent ‘lenses’, and have all the features of the originals, and in some instances, employ actual camera film roll casings and lids, to create the dials and details.Condition ReportHi Martin, Many thanks for your interest in the camera, I have contacted our in house shipping team who will be in contact with you ASAP. all the best with your bids!
