David Gray, Ricketts Head Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1988 verso 61 x 91.5cm (24 x 36 in.) Similar works by this artist retail at: £1,250 David Gray Internationally acclaimed British singer/songwriter writes: I’ve always been drawn to landscape painting and growing up in Pembrokeshire surrounded by incredible scenery certainly played a part in that. I painted and sketched this view many, many times. It’s a view of a very distinctive rocky headland that juts out at the end of Newgale beach, a beautiful stretch of sand a few miles from Solva, the village in West Wales where I lived from 1976-1990. This version is one of a series I did in March/April 1988 while I was studying for a BA in Fine Arts at Liverpool Art College. The series of charcoal sketches and oil studies of which this picture forms a part, went on to culminate in a couple of large scale oils both of which I sold in the summer of 1989. I used the money from those sales to help fund buying microphones and sound equipment for my band at the time ‘Waiting for Deffo’. We were just starting to get serious about playing our own shows in Liverpool, Manchester and beyond. While I was studying at Liverpool I used to drive back home all the way across Wales every time the holidays came in order to make a few quid working in my Dads shop and also to get some serious painting time in, out in the windswept wilds. This was also the time of numerous IRA terrorist attacks across the country. The scene that this picture depicts is actually a few hundred metres from where a large cache of IRA explosives was discovered in the early 90’s. The IRA would often land them at various remote locations along the Welsh coast. I used to drive a large double wheel transit van at the time, unfortunately just the kind of van the police we’re keeping an eye out for due to all the above reasons. I used to get pulled over driving through mid Wales time and again. I got the distinct impression that they didn’t have much else to do. One dark night around this time I was driving back to Liverpool with the back of my van completely loaded with wet oil paintings for my college show. Heading up into mid wales and there they were, mid wales finest, speeding up behind me with the blue light flashing round. I pulled over, by the this point heartily sick of the hassle, as every time I was stopped it would invariably mean having to drive back the next day to produce my documents in some god forsaken place. ‘What you got in the back there’ Says copper number one. ‘Oil paintings’ says I. ‘Better open her up, there’s a good boy.’ Says copper number 2. ‘You’ll need to be a bit careful’ I suggested ‘they’re still wet.’ Cue the sound of copper number 1 rummaging around and then a loud thud as a large canvas falls on top of him. A pause. A curse. The sudden realisation that I was telling the truth, and out he steps into the headlights where he realises that his immaculate blue uniform is now covered in large blobs of brightly coloured oil paint. A fair cop I’d say.

Philip Blacker Horses A sterling silver bangle The five horses in low relief, hallmarked and inscribed PB 7cm wide, 3.5cm high Similar works by this artist retail at: £400 Philip Blacker: Philip Blacker was born in 1949 and was educated in Dorset. On leaving school he became a steeplechase jockey and rode professionally for 13 years, being placed in the Grand National on several occasions and riding 340 winners. It was during this time that Philip developed his latent enthusiasm for sculpture. Under the guidance of Margot Dent, a former pupil of John Skeaping's, he devoted as much time to sculpture as he could spare from his riding -his first three editions, all racing bronzes based on The Grand National, sold out quickly. In 1982 he retired from the saddle to concentrate full time on sculpture. Since his retirement from the saddle he has moved on to include a wider subject matter and to experiment with technique. However his ambition was to work on a grand scale and the opportunity came when he was commissioned to create a life-size sculpture of Red Rum for Aintree Racecourse. Since the success of the Red Rum bronze, he has completed 26 further life-size or larger bronzes of horses, which now stand in Canada, Australia, France, Ireland, Barbados, Japan and the UK. Blacker has carried out countless commissions of racehorses and other subjects around the world, with sizes ranging up to twice life-size, highlights are listed below. 1988: Red Rum for Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool.1990: Mrs Moss for the Marchioness of Tavistock, standing at Woburn Abbey 1994: St Leger winner Snurge for Sir Martyn Arbib, standing at Whatcombe Stables.1995: Derby winner Generous for HRH Prince Fahd Salman, standing at Epsom racecourse.1997: 1.25 scale bronze of boxer Jim Driscoll for the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation.1998: Classic winner Bosra Sham for Mr Wafic Said, standing at Tusmore Park 2001: Blast of Storm for Barbados Turf Club.2002: Mare and Foal for Japan 2005: Multiple Group 1 winner Persian Punch for Newmarket Racecourse.2005: Dressage Horse for The International Equestrian Centre, Penang. Malaysia.2011: Oaks winner Sariska for Lady Bamford.2011: Dar Re Mi for Lady Lloyd Webber.2013: Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden for Sheikh Fahad Al Thani 2014: The Fugue for Lady Lloyd Webber

Jonathan Yeo Cara Study I, 2016 Archival Pigment Print With Hand Finished Varnish On Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultrasmooth Paper With Torn Edges. From the edition of 50 42 x 42cm (16½ x 16½ in.) Similar works by this artist retail at: £2,220 Jonathan Yeo: Jonathan Yeo (b. London, 18 December 1970) is one of the world’s leading figurative artists. He has painted and worked with iconic and celebrated figures including Sir David Attenborough, peace activist Malala Yousafzai, actors Dennis Hopper, Nicole Kidman and Idris Elba, artists Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry, supermodel and actor Cara Delevingne, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and has produced official commissions of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall which now hangs at Clarence House and within the Royal Collection. His work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries around the world and has been the subject of several major mid-career retrospectives in the UK and internationally. Entirely self-taught, Yeo rose to prominence as a figurative painter by the age of thirty following several major official commissions, such as that of the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, at a time when painting generally, and portraiture in particular, had fallen out of fashion. His collage of George Bush in 2007, however, earned his reputation as someone known for both traditional and experimental portraiture. Along with his Collage Series, Yeo has explored more conceptual themes in his series of paintings looking at cosmetic surgery and increasingly his portraits are addressing wider concepts and themes within the paintings’ narrative. His 2013 first mid-career retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery in London was acclaimed by the critics and public alike, and was accompanied by a major monograph and a BBC1 Culture Show special. The exhibition then toured in 2014 to the Lowry in Salford and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. In 2016 he collaborated with Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, where he unveiled a portrait of Kevin Spacey in his role as President Underwood, from the Netflix series House of Cards. Later that year he had his largest retrospective to date at The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg, in Denmark. In early 2016 Yeo began experimenting with 3-D printing and scanning in order to make self-portraits and has also been working with various tech companies to help develop ground-breaking virtual reality drawing software. In December 2017 he unveiled his first ever large-scale sculptural work, made using an innovative combination of these new processes at London's Royal Academy of Arts. The first ever institutional solo show of Yeo's Surgery Series opened early 2018 at the Bowes Museum in County Durham. Yeo has emerged as one of the foremost pioneers of figurative painting in Britain. His career as a painter has seen him confront a multitude of different narratives and themes. Content ranges from how we consume and discuss imagery, the modern day obsession of social media, actor’s in character, the pervasiveness of pornography, cosmetic surgery and societal portraiture. The appropriate personality to use as subject is decisive and Yeo uses them as a vehicle to explore the study of physiognomy, whilst simultaneously tackling often complex narratives and ongoing themes. Mette Skougaard, Director, Museum of National History, Denmark, said Yeo is “a pivotal force in the revitalisation of figurative art in general and in the art of portraiture in particular.

Olivia Baynham Still life with bread, tomatoes and candelabra Oil on board Signed lower right 30.5 x 40.5cm (12 x 15¾ in.) Similar works by this artist retail at: £500 Olivia Baynham: Olivia is a portrait and figurative artist. Olivia was born in London in 1994, and brought up in Hampshire. After leaving school at 18, she studied an art foundation at City and Guilds in London. Once she had graduated, she decided she wanted to develop her draftsmanship skills further and attempt a more rigorous training method in Florence, Italy. Olivia studied traditional portraiture in Florence for four years at Charles Cecil Studios. Here, she learnt the old masters technique called the 'sight-size method' whereby you measure and observe the model from a distance and to the scale of life, painting under natural light. Masters, such as John Singer Sargent and Sir Thomas Lawrence, used this technique whilst its origins lie in the practise of Van Dyke, Velasquez and Titian. She is now living in London and has a studio in Barons Court. Olivia is accepting portrait, nude and still life commissions.
