Natural History: A Very Rare Collection of World Seashells, by repute collected by HMS Challenger, 1872-1876, an interesting and rare to find collection outside of any institution and or museum, a large collection of various World seashells collected by the crew of H.M.S. Challenger while circumnavigating the globe between 1872-1876, housed within a period double door collectors cabinet, the doors opening to reveal eight various sized drawers with indexed individual compartments, all shells with attached data labels, including a small handwritten ledger documenting specimens in full, with locations noted, cabinet size 66.5cm by 37.5cm by 68cmWe know more about the surface of the moon than about the ocean floor. Scientists estimate that 91 percent of life under the sea hasn’t been discovered yet and more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been explored. What we do know about the ocean makes it almost more mysterious. It’s an alien landscape, complete with undersea mountain ranges and trenches deeper than Mount Everest is tall, home to a glorious nightmare carnival of weird, often glowing animals. And most of what we know has only come to light in the last 150 years, starting with the expedition of HMS Challenger. From 1872 to 1876, the 200-foot-long warship was repurposed as a floating lab for the world’s first large-scale oceanographic expedition, circumnavigating the globe and dredging up samples of never-before-seen creatures from the ocean floor. The Challenger explorers brought to light thousands of new species and revealed the oceans to be a place of startling depths and untold wonders. Madonna and child with the infant St John the Baptistoil on panel78 x 62.5cmCondition report: 96 x 8.5cm (framed)The support is made from a wooden panel which appears to be made from a single board with two inset dovetail battens and a slight vertical curvature. A split at the upper right corner has been repaired from the reverse with a later inset section and butterfly joins. The paint in this area has suffered from cracks and loss showing the area continues to be unstable, despite the repair. The paint layers have suffered from fine scale flaking and loss in the past. There is a network of age cracks present with some raised areas of paint following the vertical woodgrain of the panel. Areas of loss have been overpainted. The overpaint is carefully applied only to areas of loss rather than wholesale but has become slightly chalky and pale overtime, leading to a slightly mottled appearance in some areas. The surface is semi-matte with a light layer of dust.

The edges of the canvas are coming loose from the stretcher and have been reinforced with tape. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition overall. There are dark stains and accretions which are embedded into the paint layer in the central area. There is a thin varnish layer which is semi-matte, yellowed and no longer adequately saturating the darker paint passages. Mould has started to form across the surface.
