See the-saleroom.com Note: Bernd Rosemeyer looked set to eclipse a speed of 268.mph achieved earlier the same day in January 1938 by Rudolf Carraciola on a stretch of autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, when a gust of wind hit the car causing a crash and Rosemeyers death.

A 1:43rd scale Tin Wizard white metal model of a 1923 Benz Tropfenwagen. In white with wire wheels with plated parts, RN1. VGC See Plate 2 Note: An early example of the streamlining which led to development of Mercedes-Benz land speed record breakers. One of three cars entered in the 1923 European Grand Prix at Monza, achieving fourth and 5th places with one retirement. Powered by a mid-mounted 1,991 cc DOHC inline six producing 80hp and said to demonstrate impeccable road holding at 90 mph and above.

A 1:43rd scale resin model by Pinko No 150 a 1956 FIAT Abarth 500 Bertone. Streamlined body in silver with central cockpit. Mint. See Plate. 2 Note: Powered by a de-bored FIAT 600 engine, one of the first in a series of designs by Carlo Abarth that went on to take many class records over an eleven year period. In June 1956, Abarth drove a 750 with a Bertone designed body at Monza to set a series of records. Travelling 3,743km at an average speed of 96mph, Abarth broke the 24 Hour record. He went on to break the 5,000 km, 10,000 km, 5,000 miles, 48 Hour and 72 Hour records a few days later.

A 1:43rd scale resin Automodelli 1966 Carcara Vemag-DKW. Fully streamlined with enclosed cockpit with opening canopy, painted in metallic gun-metal grey. Mint. See Plate. 2 Note: DKW was one of the four German companies combined in 1932 to form Auto Union. DKW badged cars were built in Brazil between 1956 and 1967 by local company Vemag. Under the direction of Jorge Lettry, head of Vemag competitions department , a Brazilian and South American speed record for cars with motors from 751 to 1.100 cm³ was achieved with this car in 1966

A scarce 1:43rd scale resin Omicron 1965 NSU record car. Fully streamlined with enclosed wheels in bright yellow and blue livery, with ‘NSU’ and ‘Continental’ decals. Mint. See Plate 2 Note: Supported by NSU, builder and driver Wilhelm Herz broke 32 speed records at Bonneville including the 100 miles long-distance record with an average speed of 152mph and a maximum speed of 173mph. His final record, 1 km distance with standing start, was accomplished on an autobahn near Maxdorf in Germany

A scarce 1:43rd scale resin Mach One Models No 35 1932 Stapp Jupiter. A long bullet/cylinder shaped streamlined vehicle painted in French racing blue, with large single tailfin, black wire wheels with spare to one side. An unusual looking machine. Mint. See Plate. 2 Note: Perhaps the most improbable record car ever conceived, built on a Voisin car chassis and retaining the original engine, it was claimed by the builder Rene Stapp to feature three 800hp Bristol Jupiter radial aero engines, converted into ‘internal combustion turbines,’. Drive to all four wheels was also claimed to be by ‘electric transmission.’It was demonstrated on the streets of Paris before being taken to the sands of Brittany for testing, where it promptly burst into flames and was completely destroyed.

A rocket/dart shaped streamlined machine with a ‘glass’ cockpit to the front, and 4 flared fins to the rear, very futuristic for its time. Painted in silver with the Union flag and ‘DART’ to sides, seat and steering wheel to cockpit. Fitted with disc wheels and black rubber tyres. Mint See Plate. 2 Note: A 10 litre wobble plate engined speed record design by 1920’s UK racing driver Freddy Dixon which was never built. Model built and signed by Ian Jones from his own Mach One Models range.

Mint See Plate 2 Note: Especially prepared to break the 24-hour speed record for three-wheeled vehicles under 250 cc, with a single-seat low-drag body and highly modified engine. 22 international records were broken on the Hockenheimring, including the 24-hour speed record at 64 mph

A 1:43rd scale resin Barnini 1960 FIAT Abarth 1000 Bialbero. Streamlined body with central cockpit in metallic silver with Italian colours to rear of cockpit, ‘ABARTH’ and ‘FIAT’ to front. Mint. See Plate. 2 Note: Fitted with an Abarth twin cam 982cc engine, the 1000 Biabero used many of the design principles employed in construction of Abarth’s earlier record cars. A smaller version of this engine was mounted in a Pininfarina bodied prototype that beat many records and averaged 118mph over two days.

A 1:43rd scale resin Mach One Models 1960 Schmid Orpheus project. Finished in silver, a very distinctive machine with twin outboard hulls with rudders, central streamlined cockpit with a turbine engine behind. Fitted with four large metal disc wheels. Mint See Plate 2 Note: A project designed by PorscheÂ’s chief engineer around a Bristol Orpheus turbine engine mounted in a fairing between twin outboard hulls carrying self-suspending wheels. The intention was to utilise the jet exhaust to drive a paddle turning the rear wheels to achieve a 60/40 split between thrust and wheel power. At the time however, Porsche felt unable to undertake such an elaborate and expensive project. Attempts by Carlo Abarth and Pininfarina to negotiate an agreement whereby they would build and run the car failed, and only a detailed scale model was ever produced.
