THE GOLDEN PEACOCKby Sian Storey1450 mm long x 920 mm high x 700 mm deep, 36 kg This BookBench celebrates the famous cover of the 1894 edition of Pride and Prejudice, known as the Golden Peacock cover, wrapping peacock feathers around the design and framing it with tropical blossoms. It explores the artist's ongoing interest in the beauty of nature, lavish colour and exotic patterns. Sian StoreySian is a Basingstoke based artist who is passionate about paint. Her work sits somewhere between fact and fiction. The fact parts of her paintings are the recognisable things - birds, animals and women. The fiction part is the vibrant colour, spray paint mists, pattern, blossoms, brush marks and layers in her paintings. Sian's process is deliberate as she is drawn to mythology and folklore. She enjoys stories of familiar things that have dreamlike qualities and she thrives on imagination. Sian mainly works from found images, and is particularly drawn to colour, ethnic pattern, flora and fauna, and beautiful pictures. She keeps scrapbooks of images and photos she has collected on her travels and these are directly referenced in her paintings. Her tools vary depending on the type of image she is making, although her favourite tools are a spray can and a paintbrush. Sian also uses decorative ethnic papers to collage into her work.In the past two years alone, Sian's work has been featured in the Independent on Sunday newspaper, The Metro newspaper, as well as the BBC website, the Telegraph website, the Guardian website and the Time Out London blog. She is a versatile artist with experience of working on large scale projects such as stage sets and murals. Recent projects include work for The Green Party, Hampton Court Palace and Marwell Zoo.
BEYOND THE BIRDCAGEby Katy Stevens1450 mm long x 920 mm high x 700 mm deep, 36 kg 'Beyond the Birdcage' represents the restrictions felt by women in Jane Austen's time. The birds flying symbolise the beginning of a new freedom inspired by Austen, at a time when women began to make their own choices in life, both emotionally and financially. Her writing was romantic, passionate and endlessly positive and Katy wanted to reflect this both in the quote she has used and with the passionate vibrancy of colour within her design. The flowers are synonymous with love and romance and can be found in country gardens everywhere in and around Hampshire - honeysuckle, foxgloves, poppies and passion flowers. Her design utilises a rich tapestry of colours and opulent gold leaf accents.Katy StevensKaty is the creator of 'Doodles', a community based art gallery and creative workshop centre in her local town of Tadley, and is a confident and creative artist in her own right. She paints with oils, acrylics and mixed media creating stunning compositions that use vivid colours, textures and finishes to create a distinctive and magical style. With her background in graphic design, her compositions always have a strong sense of design and style and her love of nature and colour are a distinctive element within her work. Her often large scale pieces contain a rich tapestry of textures and finishes.
