A brass ejector candlestick, with drip pan, the cylindrical stem with aperture for ejector, 23.5cm h; an interesting cut steel and brass scale, the oval centre with brass register inscribed one side from 10 to 160, the reverse from 1 to 35, with cut steel pointer, rings and hook suspensions, 30cm h overall; a patinated bronze tortoise realistically modelled with rectangular aperture to the shell on a pink marble circular base, 5.5cm h x 8cm diam, one metal and two brass pestles and mortars, 19th c, mortars 9-11cm h and a Regency mahogany sarcophagus shaped tea chest, the top with central raised rectangular tablet, the hinged lid revealing pair of later rosewood veneered lidded wells and provision for a mixing bowl, brass spear feet, 15cm h x 27cm w (7) Ejector absent from candlesticks, dents and other wear. Scales in generally good condition with some minor rust patination. Tortoise possibly lacking lid to the rectangular aperture, other general wear consistent with age. All pestles and mortars showing signs of wear consistent with age, all polished. Tea chest - Interior later veneered and altered, replaced mixing bowl, rips to veneer on lid, replaced key plate, tablet to top replaced, minor veneer losses particularly front left corner return, other faults

Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. These appliqués were intended to cover the mouth of the deceased and were mainly of oval or diamond shape; usually the ends were perforated for fixing laces, and the surface could be decorated with embossing or punching dots or other ornaments. Golden mouth-pieces were widely used by Macedonians and Thracians and still employed during the Roman period. Similar pieces from that age are attested in the graves of the necropolis of the Tauric Chersonesus, as well as from Roman Mesopotamia and Osroene (Zeugma").
