Jean Tinguely, 1925-1991, i. META-CHAOS ii. CHAOS NO.1, i. signed, titled, dated 1973, dedicated pour Jean Yves and inscribed E.A. ii. signed, titled, dated 1973, dedicated pour Richard and inscribed E.A., two etchings, (plate) each 21.5x27.5cm.; 8.5x10.75in. (2) The present work is one of a number of prints made for Chaos I in the Civic Mall, Columbus, Indiana, commissioned in 1973 by J. Irwin Miller, enlightened art collector and owner of Cummings Diesel. It is an unusual work for several reasons. Many of the shapes, visible in the present study, are rudimentary geometric circles and triangles, redolent of his earliest machines. The prints, studies and diagrams that meticulously detail the mechanism, however, are testament to Tinguely's increasing preoccupation with the technical and mechanical sophistication of his work. In pro-nounced contrast to his early improvisatory works regulated by chance, Chaos I evinces a newfound technical competency and mechanical durability. It incorporated for the first time and on a monumental scale materials appropriate to their function and processes conceived in such a way that, with regular servicing, the machine could perform indefinitely.
