Peter Lanyon, British 1918-1964 - Study for Porthleven, 1950; charcoal and wash on paper, with studio stamp upper right 'The Attic Studio St Ives', 54 x 40 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Gimpel Fils, London (according to the partial label on the reverse of the frame); Paul Feiler, purchased directly from the artist; The Collection of Mollie and Graham Dark, purchased from the above Note: this was produced as part of his preparatory work before painting the ‘experimental landscape’ Porthleven, 1951, now displayed in Tate St Ives. Lanyon's finished piece captures the fishing town from multiple perspectives, and this study demonstrates the importance of Lanyon’s drawings as a means to translate his real experiences onto the canvas. The amalgamation of harsh charcoal lines teeter towards abstraction, yet retain his personal sense of observation by lingering on details such as the ‘LADIES’ sign on the right edge of the paper. Peter Lanyon studied under Borlase Smart, but came under the direct influence of Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo and Ben Nicholson after moving to St Ives in 1939. As a painter of landscapes that tended heavily to abstraction, his body of work is some of the most original and important reappraisals of modernism in painting. Held in acclaim amongst the pivotal artists that emerged in post-war Britain, his work was honoured in a large-scale retrospective between 2010 and 2011 in Tate St Ives. Mollie (1928-2024) and Graham Dark (1930-2015) were pivotal figures in Cornwall, becoming close friends with a number of the most important artists associated with post-war St. Ives and collecting and carefully curating a wonderful body of their artworks. Roseberys are honoured to be selling works from this collection, featuring many of their key artists including Peter Lanyon, Paul Feiler and their close friend Terry Frost. This follows the sales at Sotheby’s featuring a ‘A Life with Art: The Collection of Mollie and Graham Dark’ in the Modern British Evening sale on 14th November and Day sale on 15th November 2024, which includes pieces by these artists as well as a major work by Ivon Hitchens. The pair met and married in the late 1970s, before moving to Cornwall in 1980. As they got to know the artists, they would often purchase artworks directly from them as well as from their friend, William Desmond, one of the co-founders of the gallery Austin/Desmond Fine Art. This gallery was pivotal in reviving international interest in the St. Ives School in the late 20th century and the Darks were instrumental in introducing both Paul Feiler and Terry Frost to the gallery. Highlights of the works on sale are the present work, originally owned by Paul Feiler, and Terry Frost’s ‘Untitled (Blue, Black and Grey), 1959’, as well as works by Nicolas de Staël, Patrick Heyman and Kate Nicholson.

Barye modelled his 'Elephant du Sénégal' shortly before 1865 and the present lot, posthumously cast, probably in the early 1880's, bears the stamp of the Barbédienne foundry. Established in 1838, at its height, the Paris workshop of Ferdinand Barbédienne employed three hundred workmen and produced over one thousand bronzes each year. Large editions of modern and period bronzes, made possible by the development of mechanical scale reduction techniques in the 1830s and 40s, were produced to meet the demand of the growing middle class market in order to decorate their homes.Related LiteratureA. A pair of good late 19th century Southern Italian 'Sorrento' fruitwood and stained wood marquetry inlaid framed figural plaquesOne plaque signed for Michele Grandville (Italian, 1821-1893)The signed example depicting a typical Neapolitan peasant scene, perhaps after Gaetano Dura (Italian, 1805-1878) of a pair of seated male and female musicians playing to a dancing couple with two girls looking on, the figures all in traditional dress, the panel signed in red to the lower right hand corner M/Grandville, the other depicting a classical family group, the figures all seated, the male figure holding a lyre opposite a mother flanked to one side by her young daughter, a kneeling young boy at their feet, apparently unsigned, the elaborate matching rectangular frames profusely-inlaid throughout with a wide frieze of Renaissance style foliate scrolls within a formalised geometric mosaic floral inner sight and matching outer scrolling banded border within a moulded ebonised edge, the panels, 37cm high x 51cm wide, the frames, 64cm x 78.5cm (2)Footnotes:Throughout the nineteenth century, numerous workshops in the Sorrento and Mantua regions of Southern Italy specialized in fine wood and straw marquetry. Alongside a large-scale industry that supplied both tourists and a thriving export market with affordable souvenir items, these workshops also engaged in a smaller, yet equally significant business crafting individual pieces, including furniture, many of which were of exhibition quality. In Sorrento, three makers dominated production during the century: Antonio Damora, Luigi Gargiulo, and, perhaps most notably, Michele Grandville. As regular participants in major international exhibitions during the latter part of the 19th century, the ateliers of these three ebenisti employed the best part of one hundred craftsmen, and their work was characterized by the use of local woods such as olive, orange, pear, and box—often complemented on the interior by straw marquetry. The creator of at least one of the pair of offered panels, Michele Grandville, was undoubtedly the most innovative of all the Sorrentino makers. He and his workshop inlaid a wide variety of items, including furniture, with various fruit woods and hand-colored woods, employing techniques of ink-outlined and cross-hatched pictorial, floral, and intricately geometric mosaic marquetry. A recurring decorative theme in Grandville's work was scenes of daily Neapolitan life, depicted directly from contemporary engravings of Gaetano Dura. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
