IV. 41 AND A PORTRAIT OF MAXIMILLIAN, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR (1459-1519) AFTER HANS BURKMAIR, 20TH CENTURY the right of the bevor bruised; mounted in a domed glass display-case with a printed label, and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity signed by the Master of the Armouries; the second depicting the mounted armoured Holy Roman Emperor with the date above; and an oval engraved portrait (cut out) of a late 17th century sitter wearing a late 16th century Greenwich armour (3)
A GROUP OF SMALL ELEMENTS OF ARMOUR comprising and etched and gilt scaled finger-defence of a late 16th century German gauntlet (the first scale associated); four elements of pikemen's and harquebusiers' shoulder-straps, English, c. 1630-50, the lower rear corner of a lame of a mid-16th century shoulder-defence, a plate fluted in the 'Gothic' style and bearing the initials of Anthony de Reuck, a fragment of iron stated to have been excavated from the site of the battle of Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, fought in 1471, a swivel-hook and pin possibly from a 16th century armour; and two fragments of mail formed of riveted rings of round-section wire, one edged with brass rings of which some are punched and some formed with butted joins, probably Indian 18th/19th century
Italy.- Ancient Rome.- [Ligorio (Pirro, 1513-1583)] Anteiquae vrbis imago accuratissime ex vetusteis monumenteis formata, a very good 18th century reprint impression of the bird's eye view of ancient Rome, originally published by Tramezini in 1561, engraving, on thick cream laid paper, with indistinct watermark, printed from the original twelve plates, total platemark approx 1300 x 1470 mm. (51 1/4 x 57 7/8 in), total sheet approx 1480 x 1470 mm. (58 1/4 x 57 7/8 in), un-lined, dissected into 24 sections joined with fine linen, some scattered surface dirt and browning, with minor damp-stains visible, several small repaired tears and holes to, some splitting to folds, one small patch visible verso, published by Losi, 1773.⁂ A scarce copy of the 16th century architect's monumental large-scale visual reconstruction of Ancient Rome. Only one impression of Ligorio's original 1561 publication is known, printed from 12 plates engraved by Giacomo Bos, and is held at the British Library [see Cartographic Items Maps * 44580.(1.)].
Somerset.- Saxton (Christopher) Somersetensem Comitat (agri fertilitate Celebrem), an excellent well-inked impression, with strapwork title cartouche surmounted by the royal arms, putti and drapery, upper left, arms of Thomas Seckford lower right, large compasses, scale and banderole lower left, ships and sea monster, engraved map, on laid paper without watermark, 395 x 520 mm. (15 1/2 x 20 1/2 in), central vertical fold with minor splitting to lower edge, slight browning, minor handling creases, unframed, 1577.
A WELL MADE SCALE MODEL OF A BREECH LOADING FIELD CANNON on wooden steel rimmed artillery wheels, working breach action, together with ramrods mounted on a hardwood base with glass wooden framed dust cover. The cannon 44cm long approx. (B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Appearing in good condition overall. Vertical elevation function works but not side to side. The barrel doesn't recoil.
A George III mahogany stick barometer , Milesio, Kendal, late 18th century, with architectural pediment above rectangular glazed door enclosing vernier scale calibrated in barometric inches and with the usual observations, beside an alcohol tube Farhenheit scale thermometer and signed by the maker to upper corner, the trunk with exposed mercury tube and domed cistern cover with inlaid bullseye to centre and chequer inlaid border, 97cm high
A SET OF SIX EDWARDIAN MINTON FISH PLATES, handpainted by A.H. Wright, retailed by Tiffany & co, New York, each plate with a gilt low relief fish scale border enclosing a different under water scene of fish and foliage, all signed A.H. Wright, bears puce printed retailers marks, painted H139 D, impressed Minton mark and date cyphers for 1901/02, diameter 22cm (6) condition: one restored, these plates were won in an Antiques Competition in the Sunday Express magazine in March 1990 and comes with the related magazine
