Rory Breslin (b.1963)Artemision Horse StudyBronze on marble plinth base, 71cm high x 74cm long x 28cm wide (28 x 29 x 11'')SignedWith white painted display pedestalEdition 1 of 3This sculpture is a study of the horse's head in one of the most popular and important displays in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the bronze Horse and Jockey Group. The group was found in a shipwreck off Cape Artemision, in North Euboea, which was discovered in 1926. The first parts of the equestrian statue were recovered in 1928, with more pieces found in 1936 and possibly 1937. The statue was reassembled, and after restoration went on display at the Museum in 1972. The Horse and Jockey Group is special in being one of the few original large-scale bronzes securely dated to the Hellenistic period. It is approximately life-size in scale and consists of a horse in mid- gallop, on which is seated a youthful jockey, who looks back over his shoulder. The Horse and Jockey group is unusual in combining an athletic sculpture with an animal. The unknown sculptor of this masterpiece has captured the excitement and vitality of a horserace in mid-action. Some scholars have previously dated the group from the late fourth century B.C. to the first century B.C. The statues have been attributed previously to various sculptors, including Kalamis, Lysippos and the Pergamene school.

2007 Auto Union Type C Pedal Car - Entered from the Gilder Group Collection - No. 28 of 999 produced worldwide Christmas may still be several months away, but will no doubt spring to the mind of many a doting parent when they see this miniature masterpiece - number 28 of just 999 half-size pedal car versions of the all-conquering Auto Union Type C 'Silver Arrow' of the late 1930s. These beautiful mini replicas were built by Audi's fabled Quattro GmbH division and unveiled to great acclaim at the 2006 Paris Salon. Would-be drivers don't require the talent of a Rosemeyer or Stuck, just a pair of willing feet and a body under 1.35 metres tall. The pedal cars were born from Audi's search for a signature piece to spearhead its lifestyle collection. The Type C was already one of the best-selling period models in the company's miniature range and it was realised a pedal car version would ably mirror the company's heritage on a far larger scale. The technical drawings originated in the company's own tool shop and each example comprises no less than 900 components. The spaceframe chassis and bodies were hand-crafted in aluminium and trimmed in leather. There are seven forward speeds, a hydraulic disc brake and wood-rimmed steering wheel that can be removed to aid entry - just like the full-size originals.
