Bassett-Lowke - a fine 1:16 scale electrified display model of the Rhodesian Railways 4-6-4 + 4-6-4 Beyer-Garratt locomotive No.272, built circa 1939, complete with finely machined motion and running gear, full scale cab and back head fittings, fine pipework and external boiler fittings, lamps, running board mounted jacks, buck-eye couplings etc., finished in RR black livery, on show track display base.* Bassett-Lowke was commissioned by British locomotive builder Beyer-Peacock to make a 1:16 scale display model of No.272 for the directors of Rhodesian Railways in 1939. The model was completed but not shipped due to the outbreak of war. It was subsequently sent to Beyer-Peacock's valve making subsidiary, Richard Garrett at Leiston, Suffolk, where it was displayed until 1978. ** Sold at Christies South Kensington, 'Models Sale', 14th October 1988, Lot 67 to Ron Hickman OBE, designer of the Black & Decker Workmate and the Lotus Elan and Elan 2+2. Copy correspondence included between Mr. Hickman and The Long Shop Museum, Leiston, Suffolk and a copy invoice for restoration work by Bassett-Lowke, dated 1995. *** See 'The Bassett-Lowke Story, Raymond Fuller, p.108.
A Spode dark blue and gilt scale pattern two handled baluster vase and cover, early 19th century, with iron red Spode mark, No.1166, the cover with gilt bird finial, painted with in colours with sprays of mixed flowers within beaded borders, 15in. (38cm.) high, broken off just above base and reglued. * Provenance: Christie's at Upton House, nr. Banbury, Oxfordshire, 14th-15th October 1991, Lot 854.** Condition: Some moderate gilt wear to finial. Clean break (as described in catalogue) right through the base, going from just above to just below the girdle. Gilt wear to lions' noses, tops of handles and rim. Two short firing cracks to inside of rim (not visible to exterior) and two others similar to base of interior. Decoration very good with just a few small scratches to flowers.
