Leyly Matine-Daftary (Iran, 1937-2007)Les Coquilles (The Shells) oil on canvas, framedtitled 'Les Coquilles' on the verso, executed in the late 1980s90 x 72cm (35 7/16 x 28 3/8in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, London'The softness you see is because of the difference in the technique which I am lately using in my work. My method has changed slightly. I have painted plants before and also shells, but gradually I have paid more attention to detail. That's not how it was ten or twelve years ago. Then, it was just planes of colour positioned next to each other. It had neither lines nor details'- Leyly Matine-DaftaryBonhams is proud to present this magnificent painting by one of Iran's foremost female modernists Leyly-Matine Daftary. Leyly was born in Tehran in 1937. After having completed her primary education in Tehran, she attended Cheltenham Ladies College in Gloucestershire. She then went on to obtaining a Fine Art degree from the Slade School of Fine Arts in London before returning to Tehran in the late 1950s. Her artistic career began in the early 1960s, an era of great innovation in the arts in an international scale. Leyly was part of the first generation of Iranian women artists and part of the new wave of artists in Iran breaking against traditional art forms and techniques. The year of the revolution 1979 Leyly moved to Paris where she lived for the rest of her life. Here the artist beautifully captures a still life with shells using a novel perspective. The warm but soft colour palette and the delicate placement of the pieces in conjunction with the stark backdrop creates a visually stylized overall composition. Leyly is best known for her focus on extreme simplification of form, freshness of colour and the reduction of space into flat surfaces. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Adam Henein (Egypt, 1929-2020)Om Kalthoum bronzesigned 'A HENEIN' and numbered 'A.P. I.IX', executed in 2003154 x 50cm (60 5/8 x 19 11/16in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, CairoPublished:Mona Khazindar (ed.), Adam Henein, Turin, 2005 (another from the edition illustrated, pp.182-183)Exhibited:Adam Henein: Lasting Impressions, Sharjah Art Foundation, 2019 (another from the edition)Peripheral Vision, Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, 2010 (another from the edition)'No one can describe the extent of my pride when I went to Paris, stood in the middle of Europe, and raised my voice in the name of Egypt.' – Umm Kulthum Mona Khazindar (ed.), Adam Henein, Turin, 2005 (another from the edition illustrated, pp.182-183)The present work is an important and monumental tribute by one of the greatest Egyptian sculptors of the century, Adam Henein, to the greatest female singer in Arab music history, Um Kulthum. Born in at the turn of the century, Kulthum was known as the Star of the East (kawkab el-sharq). She is recognized as one of the Arab world's most famous and distinguished performers. Abstract forms, pure volumes and dynamic movement characterise Henein's mature works. 'Um Kulthum' is elegantly striking by its expressive and asymmetrical rendition and the dynamism and movement of its planes. This artwork embodies a sense of simple monumentality and timelessness that is characterised by an allusive simplification of form that is both modern and archaic. The sculpture is elegant, coherent and a characteristic style of its own that is undeniably inspired by both ancient Egyptian Pharaonic art and European Modernism while reflecting the sophistication of the artist.Adam Henein was born in Cairo in 1929 into a family of metalworkers. In 1953, he graduated from School of Fine Arts, Cairo, he went on to receive a two-year grant to study at the Luxor Atelier. The atelier was established a decade earlier by the notable Egyptian artist and scholar Mohamed Nagi to promote Egyptian art education in school circular. In 1954 and 1956 Henein received the Luxor price for his artistic achievements. Two years later, he received a diploma in advanced practices from the Munich Academy in Germany. In 1971, Adam Henein was invited to participate in an Egyptian contemporary art exhibition in Paris at the Musée Galliera. He spent the next two and half decades, from 1971 to 1996 in Paris pushing his practice through sculpture and painting and continued focusing on ancient Egyptian themes and traditional materials. The early 1970s marked an important evolution in Henein's artistic practice, whilst in Paris he was given the opportunity to be exposed to the work of great western modern sculptors and artists whose freedom of interpretation he found to be deeply inspiring. In the late 1990s Henein returned to his homeland. He contributed greatly to his Egypt's cultural landscape, particularly in Aswan where he established the city's annual International Sculpture Symposium. Upon his return to Egypt he was also appointed by the Minister of Culture to head the design team involved in the restoration of the Great Sphinx in Giza. Henein was awarded Egypt's State Medal, the State Merit Award, as well as the Mubarak Award in the arts. His works have been exhibited at the Institu du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The MATHAF in Doha, The ASB Gallery in Munich as well as in London and Rome.Throughout his vast career Henein produced a significant number of large and small-scale sculptures handling a variety of different mediums such as bronze, granite, plaster, limestone and terracotta. In 2014, the Adam Henein Museum opened its door in Cairo's Al-Harraniya district, which is a priceless gift from the artist himself to his native country. The museum is dedicated to the largest collection of Henein's sculptures as well as featuring some of his paintings. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Sliman Mansour (Palestine, born 1947)Shaheda Min Tel al-Zaatar (The Witness of Tel al-Zaatar) oil on canvas, framedsigned 'Sliman Mansour' in Arabic and English and dated '1976' (lower left), executed in 197694 x 77cm (37 x 30 5/16in).Footnotes:The Witness of Tel al-ZaatarA rare and poignant 1976 painting by Sliman Mansour in memory of the Tel al-Zaatar Massacre, and the earliest work by the artist to come to auctionProvenance: Property from the collection of a Diplomat at the Embassy of Qatar, London, thence by descent to the present ownerNote: The authenticity of the present work has been confirmed by the artistBonhams is proud to present this rare painting by one of the most sought-after Palestinian artists of our generation, Sliman Mansour. Mansour was born in 1947 and spent his childhood around the verdant hills and fields of Birzeit and then spent his adolescence in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. His childhood experiences left a significant mark on his work, heightening a sense of gradual loss in Palestine, notably after the occupation of the West Bank and Jerusalem in 1967. His early encounters also presented him with the symbols and images he would later use to preserve and highlight the Palestinian identity. The present work was executed in 1976, widely considered Mansour's artistic prime and shortly after he produced his critically acclaimed and widely known masterpiece Jamal Al Mahamel. The painting depicts a sorrowful and ghoulish figure playing a shebbabeh or traditional Palestinian shepherd's flute. The figure is a witness to the harrowing Tel el-Zaatar Massacre which happened in the very same year, one of the greatest tragedies to befall Palestinian refugees during the Lebanese Civil War. The siege of the Tel el-Zataar refugee camp began in January of 1976 with an attack by Christian Lebanese militias led by the Lebanese Front as part of a wider campaign to expel Palestinians, especially those affiliated with the opposing Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from northern Beirut. After five months, the siege turned into a full-scale military assault in June and ended with the massacre in August 1976 which resulted in the death of over 2,000 civilians. The green figure in the current work is both noble and ghoulish, representing the mixture of dignity and sorrow which characterises the Palestinian plight for freedom and making use of red and green colour palettes which Palestinians at the time were banned from using by Israeli authorities. She stands against a backdrop of typically Palestinian brick dwellings and possibly ancient ruins, Indicating the rich tapestry of civilisations that Palestine historically harboured. As a female the figure also pays tribute to the increasing role of women in Palestinian activism during the period and also highlights the particular tragedy of the massacre which saw women as the principal survivors. By using symbols derived from Palestinian life, culture, history, and tradition; Mansour uniquely illustrates Palestinians' resolve and connection with their land. His paintings epitomize art as a form of resistance. With orange trees, he represents land lost in the Nakba of 1948. With olive trees, he represents land occupied in 1967. With women wearing traditional embroidered dresses, he represents Palestinian land and the Palestinian revolution. With the landscape of Palestine and its stone terraces, he represents the mark of Palestinian farmers on the land. With images of Jerusalem, and the glistening Dome of the Rock, he represents the Palestinian homeland and the dream of return. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

London Gazette 23 March 1943: ‘This officer has completed 29 sorties over enemy territory at night, often in adverse weather. During these operations he has attacked an anti-aircraft gun post, a railway station and buildings and a convoy of motor vehicles, raking them with machine gun fire. He has displayed great courage, skill and keenness.’Flight Lieutenant Victor Smith was born in 1915 at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, and was educated at Hitchin Grammar School. He enlisted in 1940 and joined No. 3 Squadron (Hurricanes) as a Sergeant Pilot in 1941, flying night patrols over London and long range night intruder missions over northwest Europe in the summer of 1942. In early June 1942 he overshot at Manston owing to a sudden change in the wind and badly damaged his aircraft, but on the 28th of the following month ‘Damaged a Ju.88 off Haamstede’; on the 29th was ‘Shot at by an armed trawler’; and on the 31st was ‘Attacked by night fighter near Gilze and ship off Haamstede’. On the night of 9/10 August he tangled briefly with a twin-engined night fighter but jettisoned his tanks to hasten a safe getaway.Commissioned Pilot Officer in the General Duties branch, R.A.F.V.R., at the end of August 1942, he coverted with 3 Squadron to Typhoons in early 1943, and was awarded his D.F.C. in March. Operational again from May 1943, he was promoted Flying Officer and over the next three months participated in numerous ‘Rhubarbs’, attacking a variety of targets including rail transport, barges, trawlers, and on one occasion E/R-boats. At the end of August 1943 he was posted Flight Commander with 198 Squardon which at this period was frequently tasked alongside the ‘Bombphoons’ of 3 Squadron for strikes along the Dutch coast. On the night of 1 November 1943 the Operations Record Book of 198 details the hour ‘0800 - ?’ for the following “operation”: ‘In the evening, F/Lt. V. Smith, D.F.C., attended a large party held by 3 Squadron at the West Cliff, Ramsgate. He assumed the dual role of ex pilot of 3 Squadron and 198 Squadron representative and is understood to have bent the elbow and shaken a nifty leg in accordance with the proud traditions of the above mentioned bodies.’ On the last day of the same month a long range sweep was arranged in support of B-17’s making a deep penetration raid in to Germany, the Typhoons of 198 hoping to catch enemy fighters either landing or taking off at the Luftwaffe base of Deelen. Crossing into Holland two aircraft were forced home with engine trouble, leaving Smith and the remaining six Typhoons to sweep in at 200 feet. ‘Suddenly when just a mile from the base a lone Ju.88 appeared right ahead of them at their own height. After a brilliant piece of shooting by Flight Lieutenant Smith, one of the German’s engines caught fire and the Junkers side-slipped into a field. As Smithy and his section swooped over the burning wreckage they could see ‘a philosophic audience of Hollanders’ watching the Junkers burn itself out.’On 13 December Smith is recorded organising a full scale Squadron celebration at the West Cliff Theatre, complete with ‘Mess Band’, ‘certain selected W.A.A.F.’ and a ‘miraculously large supply of spirits’. A week later he was killed in action during a long range fighter sweep - Ramrod 374 - in support of a B-17 withdrawal from Germany: ‘F/Lt. V. Smith’s aircraft was seen to omit a small amount of blue smoke and drop back. As this was taken to be purely temporary engine trouble no one paid particular attention until a 609 pilot happened to look back and see F/Lt. Smith’s machine crashing vertically into the River Waal near Leekuwen.’
