King George III appointed Adams to be his Mathematical Instrument Maker in 1760, and about 20% of the Royal Collection emanated from his Fleet Street workshop. The firm passed to George's son, George Junior and then to Dudley. Perhaps his most iconic instrument is the silver 'New Universal' microscope formed in solid silver now on display at the Science Museum, dating to about the same time as the current lot, 1763.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 61

A good late 18th century mahogany stick barometer with hygrometer and thermometerBenjamin Martin, LondonThe arched case surmounted by an engraved hygrometer scale read via a fancy blued steel hand, over carved decoration and canted front angles, the long trunk with visible tube framed by a moulded edge terminating in a hemispherical cistern cover, the signed silvered dial mounted with a mercury thermometer and manual vernier reading against a 27 to 31 inch scale, with seven weather predictions. 97cms (38ins) high (1)Footnotes:Benjamin Martin described this type of barometer as a 'Triple Weather Glass' or 'Aerometrum Magnum'. Perhaps it's finest attribute is the improved hygrometer which works by means of an extended gut line mounted at the rear of the case, one end is fixed and the other is held under tension via a spring loaded rack and pinion set-up. Martin (1704-1782) was a skilled scientific instrument maker, after establishing a school in Chichester during his late twenties, from 1738 onwards he went on to present lectures and demonstrations on experimental philosophy to audiences in Reading, Bristol, Bath and London. From 1756 he returned to London where he worked as an optician and made scientific instruments and globes. He was also an author covering topics such as natural philosophy, theology, mathematics, language and geography. On 14th January 1782, Joshua Lover Martin applied for a patent which was to produce a revolution in manufactuing: it was for the process of tude-drawing. Unfortunately by the time the patent was granted on 28th March, his father Benjamin, whose invention it was, had died - bankrupt. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 62

A rare signed and dated late 18th century chequer-strung mahogany angle barometerBalthazar Knie, Edinburgh, 1787The angled case with twin suspension loops over a proud moulded edge terminating in a typical oval cistern cover, with visible tube angled at the shoulder, the inlaid ivory signature plaque dated 1787 over an ivory scale reading from 28 to 31 inches over a 17.25 inch total length, with seven weather predictions. 81cms (31 1/2ins) high (1)Footnotes:Born in Germany in 1738, Baltazar Knie became the best known barometer maker in Scotland. After years travelling around mainland Europe and Ireland as a jobbing barometer maker, he eventually settled in Edinburgh in 1776. An early advert announced that 'He blows and spins glass before company on the table, and forms many curiosities too tedious to mention. If any of the curious have in mind to see him work, they are heartily welcome, from six to eight in the evening. His stay in the city will be short.' Despite planning a short sojourn, Knie remained in the city for another forty years. Edinburgh at this time housed a strong contingent of both amateur and professional astronomers, scientists, meterologists etc; he was obviously among kindred spirits and they provided a keen clientele. In 1814, he planned to retire and to dispose of his stock of seventy instruments (valued at £309) by way of a lottery. However, it seems that due to lack of support, the idea was abandoned. Knie died in 1817.A similar instrument with ivory panel dated to 1782 was sold at Bonhams Edinburgh, 20th August 2010, lot 1206.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TP Y ФTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 80

A fine early 19th century floorstanding regulator of one month duration, with ten inch dial and five-bar gridiron pendulumJames Hatton, LondonThe arched hood with canted stop-fluted front angles and inlaid quadrants over a long arched glass panel framed by an intricately moulded door and matching canted angles, on a base with moulded panel and (later) double plinth, the ten inch one-piece silvered circular dial with outer Arabic minute track enclosing the large subsidiary dials for running seconds (marked in Arabic fives) and hours (marked in Roman numerals), with original blued steel hands, latched to the massive weight driven movement by four heavy dial feet, the shouldered and footed plates united by six distinctive tapering vase-shaped pillars, further strengthened by a heavy brass bracket bridging the top of the plates, the movement with Harrisons maintaining power to the five wheel train, each arbor running in endstops, each wheel of six crossings driving high-count pinions, terminating in a delicate 'scape wheel, the five-bar gridiron pendulum suspended from the brass bridge and terminating in a very heavy lenticular brass bob with engraved rating nut and reading against a silvered beat scale mounted to the backboard. Ticking. Together with the original (?) brass weight, door key and custom made steel crank winder. 193cms (6ft 4ins)Footnotes:James Hatton is best known as a maker of fine chronometers, but also made and sold longcase clocks under his own name; he was Chronometer maker to the Honourable East India Company, based at 4, St. Michael's Alley, Cornhill, London, from circa 1799-1812. He was apprenticed to George Margetts and Tony Mercer lists a partnership with his former Master 'Margetts & Hatton' operating 1805-1811. The current clock displays the best of early 19th century London work, from the proportions of the case, to the quality of the engraving, the design and execution of the pendulum, and of course, the exceptional workmanship throughout the movement itself.Provenance: Single family ownership for 58 years. A label applied to the inside of the hood states 'Bought from T.D Tacey, North Quay, Douglas, 27th April 1962. Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)Standing Male Nude pen and ink and wash on paper21.5 x 14cm (8 7/16 x 5 1/2in).Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Thomas Agnew & Sons Ltd, London, where acquired by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.One of many pen and ink studies of nude males Vaughan made while serving in the army. He was unable to use oil paint and had to content himself working on a small scale. These drawings of usually isolated, sometimes emotionally tortured and semi-eroticized figures, were made from his imagination and memory. A journal entry from 1943 reveals Vaughan's ambivalence towards them at that time:'All day I have been sorting out my drawings & trying to classify them. Hundreds & hundreds of boys. Dating back to the beginning of my Lintas days. They were all beginnings, always the first notes of things I hoped I would work on later. Oh how weary I am of all these boys – they are so alive with a strange tormenting quality. I want to throw them all away, but dare not cast adrift completely from the last ten years. They are almost all I have to show. The few that were worked out into paintings were mostly failures. The drawings still have the feeling of the beginnings. Now they are all mounted on sheets of white & brown paper, a hundred or more sheets & put into portfolios I made to fit them.' (Keith Vaughan, Journals, June 15, 1943) We are grateful to Gerard Hastings, whose forthcoming book on Vaughan's graphic art will be published shortly by Pagham Press, for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 19

Cian McLoughlin (b.1973) Didi and Gogo Diptych, oil on canvas, 188 x 180cm Signed Provenance: The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. April 2006 marked the centenary of Samuel Beckett's birth. In honour of this occasion, the Beckett Centenary Festival Committee, in association with the Gate Theatre and the Department of Arts, Tourism and Sport, launched an exhibition of works by Cian McLoughlin. Showcased at the OPW, these pieces explored Beckett's three main plays - 'End Game', 'Krapp's Last Tape' and 'Waiting for Godot'. In order to prepare for this, McLoughlin spent three years talking to, studying and painting the actors who had become synonymous with Beckett's masterpieces, producing large scale portraits that strove to display not the actor, but the character which they embodied. Although not part of the original Beckett Series, the current works draw wholly on the experience that McLoughlin gained during this process. Commissioned by the Shelbourne Hotel in 2007, these diptychs capture the tragic couplings of Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo) and Pozzo and Lucky from 'Waiting for Godot'. Encroaching as spectres from the fog, the faces of Barry McGovern, Johnny Murphy, Alan Stanford and Stephen Brennan are transformed. Their usual expressions are replaced by a haunted, uneasy look, causing us to examine the uncomfortable undercurrent of Becket's most famous work: our own existence. Throughout the play, the characters struggle to complete basic tasks, such as putting on shoes, and amble in a state of confusion and forgetfulness. It would seem that only Didi recalls the events of the previous day, but even so he clings to physical objects as proof, as if he too thinks that, perhaps, their place in the world isn't as concrete as it appears. Such reminders are gratefully accepted by Gogo, who is presented to us as the more vulnerable of the pair; 'We always find something, eh Didi, to give us the impression we exist' In 'Waiting for Godot', Beckett's characters are presented to us as pairs. Dominating the play are Vladimir and Estragon and these are complemented by Pozzo and Lucky. By forming two diptychs, McLoughlin has artfully mirrored Beckett's creation. Each half of the diptych can survive on its own accord, however, it is by pairing the canvases that the work is completed. 'Waiting for Godot' sees Gogo and Didi arguing and Gogo despairing, asking to end the wait. Yet, the pair do not separate. Similarly, Pozzo talks of selling Lucky but Act II sees them firmly side by side. It seems that each would rather stay together in a misery that they know than face an alternative. In one of the darker moments of the play, Didi and Gogo discuss hanging themselves from a tree. Ultimately, it is not the fear of death that holds them back, but rather the fear that one might live and be required to continue alone. By accepting the challenge of his Beckett paintings, Cian McLoughlin was forced to depict the intangible. Each piece became a study in human emotion, his brush strokes carefully gliding through a myriad of thoughts, concerns and fears. In an interview with Fumo Gallery, McLoughlin remarked on a quote by Robert Frost, 'a poem is like ice on a stove - riding on its own melting'. Here, it is clear to see that McLoughlin implemented this philosophy. With each glance, the paint slips forwards, the images tumbling to engulf the viewer in a wave of feeling.

A very similar vase, possibly the pair to this lot, is in the H Rissik Marshall Collection and is illustrated in Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954), pl.13 no.233. The inspiration would appear to have been 1730s Meissen, an influence acknowledged by the use of kakiemon sprigs on the shoulder similar in taste to the 'indianische Blumen' sprigs used at Meissen.
