Francis Rudolph (1921-2005) 'Sitter' Signed oil on canvas measuring 27" x 21". Indistinctly dated. Second oil study verso.Condition: Some marks to canvas. Original frameBiography: Francis Rudolph was born in Latvia but developed his painting career in England. Expelled from Art School for sympathising with "Communists and Jews" and was transported to England as a volunteer worker in 1947. Following his move to Leicester, England, Rudolph enrolled at the School of Art; in London, his first engagement with fine art education appears to have been at the Regent Street Polytechnic. At this time, he was almost exclusively a draughtsman and printmaker. Rudolph eventually settled in Tooting, South London. In 1948 he took up a position as porter at Springfield Mental Hospital, Tooting. There he remained for many years while also broadening his artistic fields. The influence of this employment is seen in some of his portraiture where he seeks to paint the mind of the sitter rather than simple representation. He pursued regular art classes to refine his artistic skills; becoming a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society and exhibiting at venues such as the Chelsea Art Exhibition, Toynbee Art Club and The Mall Galleries. For over 10 years he was a Member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, London's largest life drawing group. He was also member of a Saturday Art Club ‘Painting in London’; together they walked the city, drawing and painting the grand buildings and bridges along the Thames, St Paul’s, Southwark Cathedral, Imperial War Museum, Brompton Oratory, St Martins in the Field, and Houses of Parliament. He was also a stalwart member of the Toynbee Hall Art Club.’  As a painter, he was most accomplished when painting from life small-scale head and shoulder portraits. Rudolph was a prolific painter of nude life studies. The exhibitions increased his reputation within artistic circles resulting in representation in public collections including the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and Aberystwyth University.
