Tejo RemyUnique wall-mounted shelving unit, designed for a private commission, Rotterdam, 1995Patinated steel.194 x 150 x 27.5 cmFrom the series of seven.Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Rotterdam, 1995Tejo RemyNick WrightCo-author of Cut and Shut: The History of Creative Salvage, London, 2012In 1995, the Dutch designer Tejo Remy designed these wall-mounted shelving units for the home of the 010 publisher Peter De Winter, which was an impressive, converted reservoir tower. Its restricted access and intimate rooms, thus determined the scale of these seven unique commissioned works. The idea or 'the game' as Remy once put it was, 'what you cut out has to be used again so that there was no material lost'. The idea was prototyped in a workstation called 'Hideaway' shown in the 1994 exhibition of his work at Gallery Oriel curated by Ralph Turner and is consistent with his early designs, which first drew international attention, including his works the 'Rags Chair' and the chest of drawers titled, 'You Can't Lay Down Your Memories'. Both Tom Dixon, who Remy encountered during an internship with Danny Lane, and Remy have stated that their respective work is not primarily driven by environmental concerns. Nonetheless, as climate change impinges, designers who reworked waste material such as Dixon and Remy are seen as having been, intentionally or not, in the vanguard of sustainable design. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. STATUETTE DE BOUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉNÉPAL, XIVE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4615 11 cm (4 2/8 in.) highFootnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHANEPAL, 14TH CENTURY尼泊爾 十四世紀 銅鎏金釋迦牟尼像Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sSeated crossed legged with a gesture conveying the moment the earth paid witness to his enlightenment, Shakyamuni as the historical Buddha is youthfully portrayed here with quiet contentment. This delicate casting and small scale of the figure suggests its use for personal worship. Furthermore, the broadly modelled torso, the 'rice-grain' pattern incised along the hemline, and the deeply recessed waist of the lotus base are all aesthetic features of Nepalese craftmanship. Compare the present lot's sculptural modelling to another image sold at Bonham's, Hong Kong, 2 December 2020, lot 1011. For a similar treatment of the rice-grain pattern engraved along the hemline and similarly recessed lotus base, see a sculpture sold at Bonham's, New York, 23 September 2020, lot 617.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 4

STATUETTE DE MACHIK LABDRÖN EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉTIBET, VERS XIVE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4633 13.5 cm (5 1/4 in.) highFootnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF MACHIG LABDRONTIBET, CIRCA 14TH CENTURY西藏 約十四世紀 銅鎏金瑪吉拉準像Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sThe historic figure Machig Labdron (1055-1153) was the founder of the Chod tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. She is memorialized here as a Tantric master, depicted as a sublime dakini, dancing with one leg raised, a hand drum, and a skull cup. Two Vajravarahi sculptures of similar scale and style were offered at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 19 November 2016, lot 119 and published in Bigler, Before Yongle, 2015, p. 114, pl 27. The artist's reliance on the lotus stem and sash rising from the base to support the figure's pose is a common structural feature of earlier Tibetan sculptures before the 16th century. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 40

STATUETTE DE KALACHAKRA EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRENÉPAL, XVIIE/XVIIIE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4639 10.5 cm (4 1/8 in.) highFootnotes:A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF KALACHAKRANEPAL, 17TH/18TH CENTURY尼泊爾 十七/十八世紀 時輪金剛銅像Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sKalachakra, the multi-armed and many-faced tantric deity, embraces his consort Vishvamanta in a dense arrangement of hands, legs, and spiritual weaponry in an expression meant to convey mastery over time. The image, uncompromising in detail and full of ecstatic activity, shows perpetual motion without beginning or end. The small scale suggests personal use, and it is known that within Newari Buddhist culture, initiated practitioners of tantra would have possessed personal agam, or secret shrines. The characteristically Nepalese base of multi-layered pointed petals and prominent beaded rims is shared by two other personal shrines depicting the tantric deity, Chakrasamvara sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 2 October 2018, lot 59 and at Sotheby's, New York, 3 December 2015 ,lot 299.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 413

A MATCHED PAIR OF CHARLES II KINGWOOD OYSTER VENEERED WALL MIRRORS IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS PISTOR, CIRCA 1685 Of slightly varying proportions, one 130cm high, 100cm wide, the other 127.5cm high, 98cm wide Provenance: Formerly at Chirk Castle Christie's, Chirk Castle, 21st June 2004, Lot 130 Literature: Illustrated in situ in the Long Gallery in The Hon. Mrs Mary Wombwell's watercolour of 1861 and in a late 19th Century photograph published in the National Trust Guide Book, 1983, p.25.   C. Hussey 'Chirk Castle', Country Life, 5 October 1951, fig.8. (illustrated in situ in the Corridor). Catalogue note: These Charles II pier-glasses, with bevelled Vauxhall plate, have bolection- moulded Kingwood frames superbly parquetried in a wave scrolled figuring and central mosaic- parquertried medallion of shell scalloped 'oyster' veneer. These mirrors, of exceptional scale for their date, were almost certainly commissioned for the Long Gallery at Chirk. Built by Sir Thomas Myddleton ( d.1684), 2nd Brat, the Long Gallery was begun in 1670 and was substantially complete in 1678, when the sum of £100 15s 0d was paid to ' Jonathon Hooke, the Joyner, in full for all the ards at Vs per Yard'. On the same day, Thomas Dugdale was £30 'for carveing all the Carved worke at the Longe Gallery'. Both of the latter had worked at Weston Park, the ancestral home Charlotte Bridgeman, whom he married in 1677, possibly to designs by Captain William Winde. Conceived as the great room of entertainment and exercise, the Long Gallery to a large extent retained its sumptuous Baroque appearance and furnishings in 1795- although when Lady Sykes visited in 1796 she found furnishings ' so crowded together they are seen to great disadvantage'. Thus the great series of portraits in their original Sunderland frames hung above a parade of lavish cabinets, including the pietra Dura cabinets on George I gilt-gesso stands acquired on the Grand Tour by Roberth Myddleton (d.1733), as well as the Charles II silver-mounted Royal Presentation cabinet described as having 'Silver 'd Ornaments' (both of which remain at Chirk). Taking centre stage was the harpsicord by Burkhat Sindi, like that acquired by George III, dated 1742 but actually moved to Chirk in 1766 (still at Chirk), and 'Billyard Table', the first of which was installed in 1686. This rare pair of mirrors are almost certainly the '2 Pier Glasses 10.0.0' recorded in the 1795 Inventory. Although the description is all but brief, a watercolour by the Hon. Mrs Mary Wombwell of the Long Gallery, dated Sept. 20th 1861 (from an album still owned by the Myddleton family), as well as the undated later 19th century photograph of the Gallery- both show one of these mirrors above the fireplace at the South end. Both also clearly reveal how much of the furnishings from the 1795 arrangement survive , in spite of alterations apparently carried out in the 1840s and illustrated in Lady Hester Leeke's watercolour of 1840-7-although the panelling has returned by 1861. A smaller mirror of directly comparable design- still owned by the family - is possibly the 'Chimney Glass 0.18.0' listed in 1795 in that same room- although this much larger pair of mirrors was certainly placed above the fireplaces at each end by both the undated photograph and an Inventory carried out circa 1910 ('pier glass over fire place Rose wood frame North End' and '1 pier glass over fire place rosewood frame South End'). Undoubtedly originally supplied with matching pair of 'pier' or dressing tables, related 'cushion frame' mirrors are discussed by A. Bowett in English Furniture 1660-1714, Woodbridge, 2002, pp. 136-9, including a smaller example at Nunnington Hall. Like the Chirk mirrors, this also has slots cut into the back to house the cresting- although there is no evidence that any cresting was ever fitted. This is possibly the case with the Chirk Mirrors.   Condition Report: Overall there are knocks, scratches, marks and cracks consistent with age and use. There are losses, restorations and observations including: the mirrored plates have aged silvering with some losses; there are cracks to the veneers and moulded borders including some movement and lifting; there is some evidence of worm; some cuts and cracks to veneers, with some patching; repairs including some filler; the backs of stained panelled construction; some later veneers; the mitred corner joints with some movement and cracks. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

A GROUP OF EIGHT CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL DISHES CIRCA 1737 Enamelled at the centre with the arms of Colebrooke impaling Hudson below gilt and iron-red flowers in the well, the border with three cartouches depicting fishermen in riverscapes reserved on a ground of bianco-sopra-bianco finger citron sprays and gilt spearheads at the rim, comprising: One Dish, 54cm diameter (1.5cm x 1cm rim chip) Four large Dishes, each 45.5cm diameter (one with scale chip under the rim 2.5cm x 2.5cm) One at 42.5cm (two 9cm cracks from the rim) One at 40.2cm (small rim chip One at 38.5cm (glued piece to rim 9.5cm x 3.5cm and extended hair crack 8cm long) (8)   These eight dishes are part of a dinner service made in c.1737 for James Colebrooke (1722-1761) of Chilham Castle in Kent who in 1706 married Mary Hudson. In 1737, Capt. Charles Hudson brought 'Three boxes of China Ware containing dishes & plates & Tea setts with their Coats of Arms value £54' [sic] back from Canton on his ship, Prince of Orange. Charles Hudson, almost certainly a nephew of Mrs. James Colebrooke, gives details of his cargo in a letter from St. Helena, indicating the porcelain was 'Directed to Jas. Colebrook and Jas. Buck Esq.' See David S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol.II, Chippenham, 2003, p. 200 for a discussion on these arms and a soup-plate from the same service. This service entered the Collection of George Byng by descent through the marriage Edmund Henry Byng, 6th Earl of Strafford (1862-1971) and Mary Elizabeth Colebrooke, daughter of Sir Thomas Edward Colebrooke, 4th Bt., on 17 December 1894.   Provenance: Commissioned by James and Mary Colebrooke of Chilham Castle, Kent circa 1737 and by descent.   Christie's, Two late Regency collectors, Philip John Miles and George Byng, 9th June 2005, Lot 73, lot 74, lot 75 and lot 76   A further set of eight dinner plates from this service were sold at Christie's, 1st March 2011   Condition Report: One Dish, 54cm diameter (1.5cm x 1cm rim chip) Four large Dishes, each 45.5cm diameter (one with scale chip under the rim 2.5cm x 2.5cm; One at 42.5cm (two 9cm cracks from the rim) One at 40.2cm (small rim chip One at 38.5cm (glued piece to rim 9.5cm x 3.5cm and extended hair crack 8cm long) (8) 1.5cm x 1cm rim chip 54 cm dish Condition Report Disclaimer

Δ Frederick Gore RA (1913-2009)View from the terrace - Fornalutx, Majorcaoil on canvas82 x 102cmSon of the artist Spencer Gore (1878–1914), Frederick never knew him as sadly he died only a few months after his birth. Spencer, was the first president of the Camden Town Group and best known for his landscapes and interiors with their influence from French Post-Impressionism. Frederick shared his father’s passion for this period and it can be seen in his expression of colour and light in his Mediterranean views, particularly those painted in Majorca.Frederick Gore visited the Spanish island regularly during the 1970s, and for several summers he rented a house at Fornalutx. On the extreme left of this painting we see a little of the house as the remaining buildings and landscape are his viewpoint from the terrace. We see blazes of colours from the purples, blues and greens of the mountains, through to the orange and green fields and the red and yellow buildings. There is a very strong compositional foundation, which helps the eye dart about though the glowing colours. This is a really captivating work due to its large scale and vivid palette and the lot is enhanced by a lovely note written to the present owner by the artist in 1989 where he describes in detail the exact location depicted.'How nice to hear about a painting of some years ago – nineteen seventies, I suppose. Yes Majorca, painted from a house quite a long way up the Callé del Monté which leads straight up from the little main square at Fornalutx - 6 kilometres up towards the mountain (Puig Major) from Soller. The two peaks are Lóffra above Biniaraix the village closer to Soller in the same valley as Fornalutx. There is a plateau with a bit of cultivation, a hunting lodge and usually a bull and some sheep up there, behind the peaks, and an interesting walk to Soller along the heights seen on R. The house at Fornalutx belongs to a John Polimeni - Londoner of Sicilian extraction & I rented the house during several summers. Very good views on every side. Painted from the terrace above the house. A bit of the house shows on the extreme left….'Condition ReportIn good condition, under uv light no obvious signs of restoration or retouching.

AN ARCHITECTURAL MODEL OF FLAXLEY ABBEY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE 20TH CENTURYBY OLIVER MESSELShowing the principle elevations and immediate grounds Mounted on a pine board 79cm wide, 52cm deep Provenance:Made by Oliver Messel for Frederick and Phyllis Watkins Oliver Messel initiated and was almost unique in his technique of scale model making to instruct set builders. These would work less like an accurate architectural plan but more as an object to express colour and atmosphere of the proposed set deigns to his clients and the craftsmen who would eventually be tasked with making them. With such an exacting eye, many craftsmen were at first scared to work with Messel, often being asked to re-create details and sometimes entire sets multiple times until he felt that they captured his vision. The present lot is a Model of Flaxley Abbey made by Messel in 1960. He was firstly commissioned to remodel the Morning Room and Dining Room however this commission and his mantra of romanticism would eventually expand throughout the entire house and gardens. It was a project which he would come back to multiples times from 1960 until his death in 1973. The detailed model was built particularly to depict the, then proposed, new Regency-style connecting wing between the main house and the orangery as well as his, now lost, design for the water gardens inspired by the gardens of Catherina Boevey and that of the Westbury Court Dutch gardens nearby. Other recognisable models of interior design projects Messel undertook include his design for Rayne shoe shop, Maddox and the Dorchester. Upon Messel's death his estate past to his nephew Anthony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon and the contents of his studio were moved to the Kensington Palace stables. Upon the instigation of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, the majority of his theatrical and interior design models are now stored at the Victoria and Albert Museum.Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Looks to have been constructed on a laminate base with plaster or composition foundation. The model has never been covered and therefore exposed to atmosphere and is dirty with dust, bird mess etc. The foundation has reacted to damp and heat and lifted and buckled resulting in tears and losses to covering. Sunlight has bleached back colours overall and caused decorative elements (detailing, paper and laminates) to dry up and detach resulting in loss throughout. As with any house- will greatly benefit from conservation, preservation and restoration throughoutPlease see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request.
