A Victorian gilt helmet of The Gentlemen-at-Arms, applied foliate scrolls to front and back peaks, and to both sides at the back, acanthus top mount with white feather falling plume, large lion’s head ear bosses and velvet backed graduated 4 foliate scale chinscales, gilt and silver plated Garter Star within crowned wreath of oak (left) and laurel (right), leather lining (some wear and tears), on a stand. Generally Very Good Condition, the gilt good (lower part of one back scroll missing). Plate 23
A heavy WWII German Naval compass believed to be from a U boat, of copper and brass construction with gimbal mounts, the body stamped with eagle and swastika over “M” and “Nr 3081”, and with small manufacturer’s plate (incomplete) marked “Tochterkompass” (repeater compass), the dial marked “Anschutz”. Basically GC (the dial dislocated, the inner scale detached and crumpled).
An officer’s 1817 pattern helmet of The 1st Life Guards, silver plated skull, peaks and comb, with gilt edge binding, laurel sprays, scalloped edging to comb, large lion’s head ear bosses, graduated backed, 4 foliate scale chinscales and rayed plate bearing crowned post 1816 Royal Arms with supporters and motto, POW’s feathers, and scrolls “Waterloo” and “Peninsula”, original large black fur crest, leather lining. Good Condition for age, retaining most original gilt (some surface distressing to skull and one small patch of cracks and small holes) Plate 28
A fine officer’s 1818-34 pattern helmet of The 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers), black japanned skull, peaks and comb, with gilt edge binding, laurel sprays, scalloped edging to comb, large lion’s head ear bosses, graduated, velvet backed 4 foliate scale chinscales, and rayed plate bearing crowned post 1816 Royal Arms with supporters and motto, POW’s feathers, and scrolls “6th Dragoon Guards” and “or Carabiniers”, large black fur crest (restored), leather and silk lining. The damage-free brass skull has an embossed laurel wreath centre & rear spine band, with the multi-piece helmet plate with “2” centred within a garter bearing the motto “HONI.SOIT.QUI.MAL.Y.PENSE” over a white metal-rayed star backing plate. The rose-shaped chin strap bosses support a graduated brass ring & leather backed chin scale. The quatrefoil plume holder bears a black plume surmounted by a rose boss. Interior shows a leather liner, showing repair to one tab, generally service worn. Very good condition for age and very presentable piece.
