Bulgari, known as the quintessential Roman jeweller, was established by Sotirio Boulgaris, a Greek silversmith whose name was later Italianized to Bulgari. Born in Epirus, northern Greece in 1857, Sotirio hailed from a family with a rich tradition of silver craftsmanship. Throughout history, civilizations like the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians have revered and feared serpents, shaping myths and legends that endure to this day.The inaugural Bulgari Serpenti creation emerged in 1948: a bracelet-watch crafted in the Tubogas technique. In the 1960s, Bulgari elevated the sophistication of the Serpenti bracelet-watch, introducing colourfully enamelled scales to decorate the body. The Serpenti gained cult status in the 1960s, fuelled by Elizabeth Taylor's portrayal of Cleopatra and a photograph of her wearing her newly acquired Serpenti watch on set in Rome in 1962.Crafting these enamel pieces demanded rare technical skill. Each gold pentagon-shaped scale was meticulously enamelled, then fired in an oven before being assembled with tiny screws. Inside the serpent bodies, a gold spring ensures flexible sizing, while precious gems accentuate the eyes and sometimes the watch bezels, discreetly hidden within the mouth. Bulgari collaborated with esteemed watchmakers like Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin to craft the movements for these enamel snake jewels. These rare designs, numbering fewer than one hundred, primarily comprised bracelets, with only a handful of belts ever produced. Despite their scarcity, the enamel snakes swiftly became emblematic of Bulgari's artistry. The seamless blend of history and contemporary style inherent in the Serpenti collection epitomizes Bulgari's aesthetic, solidifying its status as a revered name in the world of luxury jewellery. Two Staffordshire saltglaze plates, circa 1755Crisply moulded with trellis and cartouche borders, the smaller printed in red with Aesop's Fable 'The Bear and Two Travellers', with a brown line rim, 19.3cm diam, the larger plate printed in black, with two lovers in a garden, a third figure peeking out from behind a tree, 23cm diam (2)Footnotes:Only three plates with this rare version of Aesop's The Bear and Two Travellers appear to be recorded. One such plate is illustrated and discussed by Harriet Carlton Goldweitz, The Bear and Two Travellers: An unrecorded saltglaze fable plate' ECC Trans, Vol.14, Pt.3 (1992), pp.292-9. The source print is most probably taken from Francis Barlow's first edition of Aesop's Fables and is illustrated in fig.11. Mrs Goldweitz's octagonal plate was sold by Sotheby's on 20 January 2006, lot 97. A similar example was sold by Christie's on 20 October 1986, lot 26. The present lot is the third known example and is of pleasing small scale in comparison, the print therefore filling the centre of the plate. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
An exceptional Chelsea figure of Ceres, circa 1749Finely modelled on an impressive scale, the female figure standing contrapposto before a tree stump, nude save for the drapery gathered about her left hip where she holds sheaves of corn, a serrated scythe in her right hand, a wreath of corn securing her long hair which is tied in a bun and falls down between her shoulder blades, the square base and the stump incised with fine lines simulating wood grain, left in the white, 29.8cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceElizabeth Adams CollectionUndoubtedly a highlight of the author's collection, Elizabeth Adams illustrates two views of this remarkable model and notes, 'The figure of Ceres has a monumental aspect and may be one of the earliest works of Joseph Willems at Chelsea', see Chelsea Porcelain (2001), p.32-33.Chelsea figures of this early period are not only very rare but most surviving examples show signs of manufacturing difficulty in the form of firing cracks, warping and kiln specking. Conversely, the figure of Ceres stands proud, the glaze smooth and almost perfect. The modelling is, as Adams suggests, possibly attributable to Willems who was employed at Chelsea in 1749, on the cusp of the triangle and raised anchor periods. A group of Rustic Lovers in the British Museum (inv. no.1887,0307,II.6.a) is marked with the rare blue crown and trident mark, dating to circa 1749-50. Although this group has experienced problems in firing, in contrast to the figure of Ceres, there is a strong similarity in the modelling, especially the treatment of both female figures' hair and the 'combed' lines to the tree stumps and bases. The Rustic Lovers is referenced by F Severne Mackenna who states that he knows of only three, possibly four further triangle period figures, Ceres evidently not known to him at the time of writing. This figure is clearly a triumph of early English porcelain sculpture, a landmark piece in the history of Chelsea. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
