On Vaccine Inoculation, 1st edition, 1806, two hand-coloured engraved plates (water stain and some spotting), bound with at front Delineations of Cutaneous Diseases: Exhibiting the Characteristic Appearances of the Principal Genera and Species Comprised in the Classification of the Late Dr. Willan, by Thomas Bateman, 1st edition, 1817, 41 hand-finished colour plates only (plates 31-72), library stamps, light spotting, library cloth, upper joint splitting, some fading and stains, 4to. Willan followed on from Edward Jenner’s initial small scale vaccination trial and collected data, published here, based on the Rev. William Finch’s vaccination programme in St. Helens, 1799-1800, where over 700 people were inoculated. ‘Modern dermatology may be said to start with Willan. His classification of skin diseases gained him the Fothergillian Medal of the Medical Society of London in 1790. He established a standard nomenclature which is still more or less in use today’ (G-M 3985). (1)
