A MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESKCIRCA 1835 AND LATER With tooled leather inset top, open bookshelves to the pedestals, the pedestal backs panelled, with frieze drawers to one side, opposing a fall front frieze drawer flanked by false drawer fronts86cm high, 243cm wide, 136cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use.Some old chips, splits and losses.Some old repairs and replacements.The leather top with the expected marks, knocks, fading and discolouration. Some short tears and noticeable dark scratches. Line of underlying construction is visible to some areas of the leather.This desk has been constructed of elements of varying dates from circa 1835 and later.The overall design and scale is likely the result of an entire reconstruction.Repolished and revarnished overall.Some elements that look to be 19th century period, may be of later date, including carved elements.Various marks to the interiors of drawers, and underlying structure indicating reuse of elementsNo alternate holes to handles to the drawers that operate. One handle detached but present.Some screws to hinges missing, and others are replacedOne lined long drawer operates, lock is open, no key present. The opposing long drawer front is hinged and opens to reveal a folio shelf. There is no catch or lock to engage this and it remains open. The short drawers on the shorter ends all open and operate, no keys present. A CARVED WHITE ALABASTER FIGURAL GROUP OF TWO PUTTI 18TH/19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY ITALIANThe figures with sword and balance scales, dove in a crown below, above variegated yellow marble detailed plinth with cartouche inscribed "Justitia Firmat Solium Prov; 16. 12" (literally 'the throne is established by righteousness' from Proverbs "abominabiles regi qui agunt impie quoniam iustitia firmatur solium") 61cm high, 38cm wide Condition Report: SALEROOM NOTICE; this lot has been amended as follows:A CARVED WHITE ALABASTER FIGURAL GROUP OF TWO PUTTI 18TH/19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY ITALIANExpected minor chips, abrasions, scuffs, scratches and 'nibbles' in places. Some dust and deposits to the folds of the carving. Restorations under fairly strong light include:standing child right wrist and distaff in his hand, top of right arm, centre drop section to scale holder and lacking the pan string/chains, seated child shoulder- hairlines to reverse of his coatThe bird appears to have old replacement elements/repairs made to the head and one wing The crown that the bird is perched on has a glued repair to one point/finial and another appears to be a replacement elementThe inscription to the base has possibly been heightened and strengthened with later white paint. A pair of Derby sauce tureens and covers and a Coalport sauce tureen and cover the pair with gilt lion mask handle terminals and mask and claw feet, painted with floral sprays and sprigs, iron-red marks, circa 1810-20, 17cm [some damage]; the single painted with two floral sprays on a gilt scale ground, circa 1805-10, 18cm [minor firing discolouration] 3.* The pair with hand written labels 'From a set that.belonged to the poet Wordsworth'.

▴ Alan Davie RA (1920-2014)'Bird Cage No.1', 1956signed 'Alan Davie' inscribed with title and 'OPUS 0.165', and dated verso, oil on board122 x 152.5cmProvenance: with Gimpel Fils, London, November 2007;Exhibited: Graves Gallery, Sheffield, 'Alan Davie', June - August 1965, no.11;Literature: A Bowness, 'Alan Davie', Lund Humphries, London, 1967, pl. 127.In the 1950s, Alan Davie was influenced by earlier artists and movements, such as Paul Klee and abstracted Surrealism. The present lot shows a semi-surrealist approach through his use of composition, form and colour, but with his own technique of combining richly textured paint and rubbing back.More significant perhaps is the impact of the Abstract Expressionists upon the young painter. He had visited the Venice Biennale on a scholarship in 1949 and, in viewing the travelling Peggy Guggenheim exhibition, he was one of the first British artists of his generation to be exposed to Abstract Expressionism. Like Pollock, Davie would create his works by laying them on the floor. Although his brushwork in 'Bird Cage 1' is a little more controlled and the composition more representational than others, the scale and bold handling of the paint is reminiscent of the New York school.It was through Peggy Guggenheim that Davie was introduced to Charles and Peter Gimpel, which began a relationship with dealers Gimpel Fils that lasted over sixty years. Following this partnership in 1950, the artist’s reputation rose steadily and in 1956, the year of this work’s creation, he had his first New York exhibition with works purchased by MOMA. Closer to home, the Contemporary Art Society and Tate Gallery also bought pieces and in 1958, aged only thirty-eight, retrospectives were held at both Wakefield City Art Gallery and the Whitechapel Gallery, London. By the 1960s, Davie had gained the reputation as a major player in the art world and with 'Bird Cage 1' we get to see the talents of this unique artist at a pivotal point in his career. Condition ReportPresents well, no apparent major condition issues. Some light surface dirt. A few tiny old spots of paint loss visible on very close inspection. Nail heads visible to edges of board, these may have been retouched as well as the extreme edges of the board, likely due to old frame abrasians. UV light does show some fluorescence elsewhere but appears to be artists paint rather than later retouching.
