Bell of Prescot, Lancashire mahogany cased folding guinea scaleFootnote: The candlestick was formerly the property of the Manager of the Russian state bankCondition report: The scale is OKThe candlestick is OKThe card case has a slight crack near the hinge.
A 19th century mahogany and boxwood-strung eight-day bracket clock; the oval hinged gilt-metal handle above a 20cm dial with Roman numerals and signed 'Gammon, Birmingham', the twin fusee gilded movement striking on a bell, together with pendulum and key, with pierced gilt-metal fish-scale-style side sound apertures and raised on four gilt-metal ogee-style bracket feet (39cm high with handle x 30cm widest point to feet at bottom) The case appears to be in good order, the dial is a little dark and has some flecks and cracks around the winding holes although not too bad. The gilt metal ogee feet have several pieces of gilding away commensurate with age. There are a couple of small bits of veneer away from the rear of the door around the framed glass and there is a small piece approx. 1.5cm square moulding at the back away. It is difficult to tell exactly if the movement is original to the case but in the Auctioneers opinion it looks good although no guarantees can be given. The piece has come from a good private source and as we understand it they have had it in the family for many years.
A good early 19th century brass inlaid mahogany-cased eight-day bracket clock; the figured domed top above an eight-inch cream dial with Roman numerals and signed 'P. Lacey - Bristol', flanked by two ring carrying handles above arched gilt-metal fish-scale-style sound apertures, the fine gilded twin fusee movement striking on a bell and with dogtooth and foliate engraving, with original pendulum, raised on four gilt metal ball-style feet, the front two feet with moulded decoration (42cm high x 30cm wide including handles x 17cm deep including convex glass)This comes with an insurance valuation from Montpellier Clocks in Cheltenham who original supplied the clock in 2008. They said it was circa 1825 and the valuation then is the same as that paid for it of £5,500. Signed Mr T. Birch. Looking at it from the front there is a very small fingernail sized piece of moulding away, front right where the arch meets the horizontal moulding at the top. Some of the brass stringing is very slightly proud of the mahogany. The dial looks to be in reasonable condition with some very minor pieces of paintwork away. Being super critical there are slight scuffs around the winding holes and again scratches and paintwork away. The mahogany case on top is of a nice figuring and there is a very small historic L shaped crack of about 1cm in between the 12 an 1 o’clock position at the top of the wood but in the Auctioneer’s opinion this does not detract. The sides look quite good and it is noted that looking at the from the left hand side there is a small 6.5cm piece away at the back of the “fish scale” side fret. The arched back door is glazed and there is an approx. 1cm square piece of mahogany away from the escutcheon hole on the left. The lock looks OK an it has a service ticket on it, which appears to be October 2014 by Time In Hand (Shipston) Ltd. This comes with pendulum, keys etc., and the bell is quite large and striking and the gilded twin fusee movement has been nicely engraved.

Cesare Roccheggiani (Italian, active second half 19th century): A pair of late 19th century 'Grand Tour' framed topographical micro mosaic circular panels depicting views of St Peters Square and The Forumthe former showing St Peter's Basilica in Rome, a number of paired figures in the middle-ground, a rooftop scene in the immediate foreground, the latter showing the Forum, depicting the Temple of Vespasian and Titus between the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Temple of Saturn, with a couple depicted to the bottom left, the views mounted within moulded black marble borders and set within contemporary gilt bronze foliate scroll pierced frames, the rear of each frame with original green silk covered backing with gilt tooled trophy makers marks, stamped G ROCCHEGGIANI, ROMA,, 33.2cm diameter overall (2)Footnotes:As a member of a well-known family dynasty of master mosaicists, Cesare Roccheggiani had a reputation as one of the most accomplished artists in the city of Rome in the second half of the 19th century. Probably related to Lorenzo Roccheggiani, a late 18th century mosaicist at the Vatican workshop, whose work included the altarpiece, Crucifixion of St. Peter after Guido Reni, he may have also been related to Nicolo Roccheggiani, who was most likely Lorenzo's son who was also another principle artist at the Vatican although at a slightly later date.Previously thought to have been active in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in the period 1856 to 1864, little was known of the Ceasre Roccheggiani before he established his own independent atelier, first at 125 via Babuino and then by 1874 at 14-15 Via Condotti near the Piazza di Spagna. However, more recent research and examination of Roccheggiani's mosaics suggest that the artist and craftsman may have worked in the atelier of Michelangelo Barberi given that he was strongly influenced by Barberi's style of work and in some cases directly copied some of his own compositions ( the famous 'Rome by Night and Day' being one of these works). After Barberi's death in 1867, his studio continued under the direction of his daughter, Isabella Barberi but was last listed in 1873 which coincidently is actually the year before Roccheggiani first opened his own business. In the mid 19th century there were nearly one hundred mosaicists operating in Rome, many from small workshops with the majority of their output manufactured solely for the burgeoning tourist trade. However the diverse range of pieces produced in large quantities were generally of a small scale comprising small plaques, miniatures and cameos. By comparison the very best studios such as Cesare Roccheggiani's usually produced more substantial or finer micro mosaics in much smaller quantities. These magnificent and costly works however remained the preserve of the rich and powerful and many of the works, often produced by the Vatican workshop were either gifted by visiting aristocrats, given as diplomatic gifts, commissioned by monarchs or displayed at the major international exhibitions such as the Great Exhibition of 1851.A contemporary photograph of Roccheggiani's shop front illustrates the extensive range of mosaics that his company offered and a guide book to Rome lists him as a supplier of mosaic pictures, tables, cabinets, paper weights and gold ornaments (Murray, 1899, p. 22). Of these works, his table tops and large scale pictures were perhaps the most expensive pieces and were acquired by wealthy and prestigious clients and and displayed at the international exhibitions which were very much a feature of the late 19th century. Roccheggiani's mosaics was exhibited at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition at Philadelphia and at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition and his standing was such that he served as a committee member for The Italian Exhibition in London in 1888.Examples of his work in museums in the UK include an étagère with mosaics in the Gilbert Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, and a necklace in the British Museum, London (Gabriel, 2000, no. 59; Gere, 1984, no. 966)..For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Attributed to Michael Pacher (German, circa 1435-1498): A carved wood and polychrome and parcel gilt decorated figure of a male saint, possibly St JohnSouth German or Tyrolean, late 15th centurythe figure with rope tied wavy shoulder length fair hair looking slightly to sinister, clad in a draped and folded cloak held about his body, his left hand clutching the upheld hem, raised on a later stained wood rectangular base, the figure, 78cm high, the later base 5cm high Footnotes:Provenance:With Reinhold Hofstätter, ViennaThe sculptor, architect and painter Michael Pacher was active during the later part of the 15th century. Cited as perhaps one of the earliest artists to introduce the Renaissance style to a German clientele, he was famous for producing elaborate painted and sculpted works in both wood and stone showing a uniquely personal side incorporating elements of the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Gothic.Producing works including painted structures for altarpieces on an unparalleled scale in North European, his finest work is perhaps the St Wolfgang Altarpiece (1471-1481) in Salzkammergut which is considered to be one of the most outstanding examples of a carved and painted altar shrine illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Pacher's other great work, the Altarpiece of the Church Fathers was created in 1483 for Neustift Monastery and this also combined painting and sculpture to produce a unique composition. Influenced primarily by North Italian art, Pacher's work however shares characteristics with the work of the Italian artist Andrea Mantegna whilst also reflecting the heritage and tradition of a number of South German carvers. The plump facial features of the present lot with his upturned nose, distinctive waving to the hair and crinkled folds of the drapery compare closely to figures in Pacher's St Wolfgang Altarpiece, see T. Müller, Gotik in Tirol, Bozen, 1976, figs. 122-124 and pl.
