* RICHARD "TURNERAMON" TURNER A.R.C.A (BRITISH 1940 - 2013), THE DAUGHTERS OF BABYLON oil on canvas, signed 102cm x 152cm Framed Note: Richard Turner was noted post modernist artist born in Derby England and was educated at Bemrose Grammar School. In 1960, he enrolled at the Derby College of Art where he won the J. Andrew Lloyd scholarship for Landscape, enabling him to study at the Royal College of Art in London, from 1963. There, he was tutored by Carol Weight and Sir Peter Blake. He graduated in 1966 with an Associate of the Royal College of Art Degree, as well as prizes in Life Drawing, Life Painting, and Landscape Painting. His work was much admired by his contemporaries and his tutors. For the next two years, Turner was a lecturer at the Guildford School of Art; working on environmental installation projects with Australian artist Tony Underhill. He was introduced to etching by Peter Olley and Norman Ackroyd. In 1968, he was employed as an epigraphic artist and photographer by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. For five years, he was based at Chicago House in Luxor, Egypt making facsimile drawings of the reliefs on the walls of the Temple of Khonsu, Karnak and Medenet Habu, adjacent to the Valley of the Queens. In 1973, Turner returned to England, lecturing at Salisbury College of Art for three years, before being re-employed in Egypt by the University of Chicago, for a further four years. During this time he made full scale tracings of all columns in the Great Hypostyle Hall of Luxor Temple. In 1980 he moved to the USA; built a split-level chalet style house in Big Bear, California, and ran his own gallery, named Minnelusa Gallery, on the shores of Big Bear Lake. He also worked as a graphic designer with Treasure Chest Advertising, based in Los Angeles. Four years later, Turner returned to the United Kingdom, and briefly lived in Edinburgh before moving south for five years. He returned to Scotland in 1989, and ran a successful "art holiday" home business from Park House in Kirkcudbright, as well as lecturing part-time in various colleges and schools. In 1993, Turner met HM The Queen and Prince Philip, at the opening of Tolbooth Art Centre in Kirkcudbright. Prince Philip commented on Turner's work saying it looked "refreshingly different". There is carcass movement to the veneers on the arch which have cracked. There is no inspection door in the arch. The movement is clean albeit dusty and with some finger marks. A George III mahogany bow-front barometerBy Adie & Son, EdinburghThe 8in silvered scale with vernier above the trunk with inset thermometer99cm high Condition Report The barometer is in good working condition. The pediment block is a slightly different colour than the stem and there is a new brass hook for hanging. Both silvered scales are tarnished. The bow front fillet below the main dial is a different colour, more orange as is the base fillet. New brass screwed strap across back of cistern cover. Marks and scratches across trunk consistent with age.

Lot 609

A George III mahogany stick barometerBy Cary, LondonWith arched silvered scale96cm high Condition Report The stick barometer is in good overall condition. It has probably been repolished at some stage but some time ago. The silvered scale is clear and not bright. The cistern cover is a little loose and the lower oulding has lost some sections (see image). The fillet edge has some slight chipping to its corners.

Lot 608

A Chinoiserie decorated stick barometerIn the manner of Daniel Quare, Early 18th Century and later The silvered scale with two verniers, set by the brass finials above, tapering column and spiral twist base, losses to decoration and replacement97cm high Condition Report The lacquer decoration work has flaked off in vertical narrow sections all over the tapered trunk section. Is this perhaps due to the wood shrinkage? The spiral twist section has traces of black lacquer and gilt and is worn off on the high sections showing the wood below (walnut or mahogany?). The cistern is lacquered and has similar degrading as well as some worm holes. The back of the cistern has a flattened edge to sit against the wall. The two brass rings on the trunk are well turned and deeply patinated. The two side panels of the pediment appear to have a later black lacquer application. With this later lacquer, it is very difficult to judge if the pediment sides and base are original, hence the qualification in cataloguing. The top fillet below the finials, appears original and the lacquer is worn and chipped. The finials are brass and lacquered which is dirty and patinated. The back panel is decorated and is reasonable condition, although cracked and with some losses. Behind the dial the internal wood surface is painted with a red/pink colour perhaps with glued paper below.
