Margaret H Collyer (1872-1945) Anticipation Signed and dated 1907, oil on canvas, 68.5cm by 88.5cmProvenance: A Private Estate, North Yorkshire Unlined, slightly lacking in tension. One key missing. Minor damages to the turnover margins. Dirt and debris behind bottom stretcher. The painting has moved slightly in the frame with a narrow gap at the bottom. Slight stretcher bar marks. Brittle age craquelure throughout, the larger scale cracks are slightly elevated and visible in a reflected light, particularly evident in the top left corner. These appear stable with no history of flaking. There are a few areas where the drying cracks have opened up slightly, for example the top left of the background. Possibly some very minor abrasion in a few other areas. One small area of damage, unrestored, to the left edge just above the signature where there has been some minor loss of paint. An old varnish has been unevenly removed, and remains yellow and ingrained in the troughs of the paint. Slightly yellowed upper varnish, glossy. Light surface dirt with a few matt splash marks to the left of the dog.

James Miller (mid-19th Century) American "Still life" Signed, inscribed and dated 1849 verso, oil on board, 44cm by 53.5cm The reverse of the panel is painted brown. Minor knocks and scuffs to back of panel from past framings. One screw hole bottom right. Panel flat and even, with plane-marks on surface visable in reflected light. No splits apparent. Some patches of drying cracks/retraction cracks in a few passages, notably borad cracks in the glass of beer and smaller scale cracks in the dark shadows of the plates and knives, and the knife handles. The table is just a think glaze over the original wood of the panel, much of the rest of the painting is thinnly painted, with the grain of the wood showing through in the background in places. There has been some thinning/abrasion from age and cleaning in the past in passages, notably the knife on the plate, the shadows around the plates and bread, possibly to the foam on the beer, to the right hand plate, the bottom of the bottle and parts of the cheese, and left knife handle. Some of these areas have been a little suppressed with retouching - such as the knives, shadows of plates. There are futher minor patches of overpaint, likely to small damages, to the left and right edges of the table, to a small dent below the table top, to the right of the beer foam, and to small dents in the background. The varnish is slighly broken up from age, and is slighly opaque making it difficult to see if there is further overpaint in the background.Minor scuffs and knocks at the edges from movement in the frame. Scattered minor drips and scratches, including scratches to the bottle/cheese, and broader scratches under the table top.A fairly matte old varnish, likely a little yellowed. Light surface accretions. Most of the over paint is under the upper old varnish layer, and thus is not readily apparent under ultraviolet light.
Abraham Cooper (1787-1868) "A Mule (the property of Lord Holland) and an Ass"Initialled, oil on panel, together with a copy of the print by John Scott after Abraham Cooper, 27.5cm by 34.5cm and 14cm by 19.5cm respectively (2)Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Board effectively sound with no obvious splits or warping. Subtle horizontal linear crack approx at the half way point of left hand side edge, and roughly 2-3cm in length. No obvious indication of associated retouching. Some likely stregthening to lower left hand corner and along lower edge extending roughly 8cm by 1-1.5cm at widest point, which is deteriorating and varnish has a somewhat opaque quality. Some minor rubbing/abrasions to outer edges. Hairline crack left hand side edge approximately 1cm from upper left hand corner and roughly 0.5cm horizontally. Further hairline crack in similar at parallel point right hand side edge and of a similar scale and which can be mildly seen from reverse. Paint possibly slightly thin in places. Otherwise in a broadly stable state of preservation. Slight cockling to the sheet of the print. Time staining throughout sheet, which is slightly more pronounced towards outer edges against mount. Sporadic small sized and larger clusters of foxing spots, mostly evident to margins but not exclusively. Not examined out of the frame.
Heywood Hardy ARWS, RPE (1842-1933) At the watering trough Signed and dated 1907, oil on canvas, 59.5cm by 85cmProvenance: A Private Estate, North Yorkshire Unlined, fair tension, two keys missing with one stuck behind the bottom stretcher bar causing a slight distortion to the canvas at the face in bottom right corner. Further small distortion to the top middle sky from a push from the reverse (see raking light image), with no loss of paint/ground.Brittle age craquelure throughout, with broad cracks in the sky and thicker pale areas and a finer scale in the darker areas. Some places almost appears as tight wrinkling, e.g. the gent's jacket. In places this is slightly raised but stable with no apparent history of flaking. A few places have cracks that have opened up slightly and are visibly pale, e.g. the gent's jacket, horse's shoulder and leg, around the right hand dog. Feint stretcher bar marks and slight cracking at the edges where there is also a little rubbing from the frame rebate. Possibly some very tiny and minor micro-flaking of glazes in places. Some slight matt patches in the hill on the right, no cause apparent.Unevenly cleaned in the past, with remnants of an old yellow varnish visible in patches, particularly evident in the sky. The yellow patches are shiny. Slighly uneven upper varnish layer, with very light surface dirt and debris.
Thomas Creswick RA (1811-1869)Rustic family at rest beside a stream in an extensive landscapeSigned, oil on canvas, 69cm by 89.5cmProvenance: A Private Estate, North Yorkshire. Mandell's Gallery, LondonLined, with loose cotton secondary canvas at the reverse. All keys present. Good tension, but a little stiff. Sky is fairly pressed in areas from lining process, or an attempt to reduce raised cracks. Particularly evident in the centre top right of tree. Patches of large-scale brittle age craquelure throughout, slightly raised in the sky in places (see images in raking light) but stable. A few scattered tiny unrestored losses including a scratch to the left of the central gatepost, and a white loss below the gate. Ther has been slight abrasion to delicate glazes and outer leaves on the trees. Some reinforcing retouching to the trees, plus some light retouching in the sky, particularly to darker cracks and minor staining in sky. Futher small patches of overpaint, including to the back of the pink bonnet. One large band of possible overpaint or artist's reworking (or a combination) runs horizontally across from the end of the fallen tree to the left edge. From the shape, and remnants of paint under the upper layer, it is possible that the fallen tree extended across the painting - this may have been reworked by the artist and then as the pentiment became more visible over time and with cleaning further suppressed with overpaint. It is a little more visible in the condition report images than in person. The picture has been partially cleaned in the past, with older varnish left on in the darker passages. An even upper varnish, not yellowed. Very light surface accretions - a few fly spots, a brown drippy mark to left of tower, and a yellowish patch of residue at the bottom of the sky on the left.
