Breitling - A steel 'Emergency' chronograph wristwatch, circa 2006, model number A73322, serial number 90935, the signed circular silvered dial, 33mm diameter, with luminous hands, split centre sweeps, subsidiary dials for hours at 10 o'clock, minutes at 6 o'clock and seconds at 2 o'clock, date window at 4 o'clock and tachymetre inner bezel, 'superquartz' movement with start/stop and reset pushers above and below the liveried screw down crown and screw down emergency release cap at 5 o'clock, case, 45mm diameter, bi-directional rotating bezel, verso with 4 screws, numbered A73322, to a steel 'professional II' link bracelet numbered S1306, terminating in a signed fold over clasp with hinged safety catch, presented in the original case within the original flight case with instruction CD, warranty booklet dated 17/11/2006, chronometer certificate, frequency tester, screwdriver, carrying zip-up case and a spare link In 1995 Breitling introduced the ‘Emergency’, the very first wristwatch with a built-in personal locator beacon (PLB). It was originally designed to enable the accurate location of pilots or passengers following a plane crash, but it is equally useful as a safety and survival instrument in all distress situations on land, at sea and in the air.It is equipped with a dual frequency transmitter compliant with the specifications of the Cospas-Sarsat international satellite alert system and serves both to issue alerts and to guide search and rescue missions. The built-in microtransmitter alternately operates on two separate frequencies. It transmits a first digital signal on the 406 MHz frequency intended for satellites and lasting 0.44 seconds every 50 seconds, and then a second analog signal on the 121.5 MHz homing and rescue frequency, lasting 0.75 seconds every 2.25 seconds.Around 40 000 ‘Emergency’ watches have been sold and many have already been instrumental in saving lives.Unscrewing the cap to the lower right of the case deploys the ariel and activates the transmitter. Following activation, the watch needs to be returned to the manufacturer for re-arming. In the case of a genuine activation, this is usually free of charge. False alarms are chargeable and will also incur the $100,000 fine assessed by the Federal Aviation Administration, plus all the costs that go with a full-scale search and rescue operation. First suggested in his 1950s sculptures, in the Teddy Boy and Girl series, he moved to add ever more dramatic clothing as his work matured, leading to the billowing cloaks of the 1970s. Experimenting with the motif of the voluminous, blown cloak, as seen in his Jubilee sculptures, Chadwick created many variations on this, including with the fabric streaming out behind, swept to one side and, in the case of the present work, 'falling from the shoulders in ceremonial amplitude' (Michael Bird, Lynn Chadwick, Lund Humphries, Farnham, Surrey, 2014, p.156).Here, the female figure is shrouded in a long, draping cloak, the positioning of which lends the figure a sense of grandeur, and also of mystery. She seems to be a powerful, all-seeing presence, stately in her pose and inscrutability. As is typical with Chadwick, her female features are indicated only by the suggestion of her breasts and a triangular, block-like head, but she also seems imbued with a gracefulness that is particularly feminine. Her face is, as always, blank, with Chadwick once famously declaring 'no expression is an expression' (Lynn Chadwick: The Couple, exh.cat., Pangolin, London, 2011, p.3). He looked to body language as a more useful device for conveying attitude than facial features, which could be limiting. As ever with Chadwick, his ability to tell us so much with an incredible economy of form is notable. The angularity of Chadwick's style is writ large in this sculpture, and accentuated by the folds of the cloak. Chadwick studied closely the weight and properties of different fabrics and seems to have chosen for the present work one which hangs particularly heavily, with a weight that suggests ceremonial robes. Instead of flowing, curving fabric, we have grooved, geometric lines that accentuate the sharp posture of the shoulders and the strong stance of her legs, which are just visible. The addition of the cloak is also important in that it suggests movement, trailing as she seems to move silently forwards. Although the stance of her body appears apparently to be still, the flowing length of her cloak seems caught in movement, with dynamic ripples indicating her passage through the space. It is as though she walks among us with slow and considered steps, gliding past. As Chadwick explained, 'The important thing in my figures is always the attitude – what the figures are expressing through their actual stance. They talk, as it were, and this is something a lot of people don't understand.' (Lynn Chadwick, quoted in Edward Lucie-Smith, Chadwick, Gloucestershire, 1997, p.31). The mid-1970s brought about a subtle change in his approach to depicting the figure. As Michael Bird has written, ' 'Presences' was how he referred to his new figure sculptures; they were about being, not doing: 'I used to call them Watchers, but no longer. Sometimes they are not watching anything. What they are doing is illustrating a relationship – a physical relationship – between people'. It was through this relationship, not through purely formal or allusive qualities, that he wanted his sculptures to speak: 'If you can get their physical attitudes right you can spell out a message'' (Michael Bird, op. cit., p.147). Although Cloaked Figure IX is a single figure and not depicted, as so often in his work, with a male counterpart, her presence is undoubtedly a powerful one. Created as she is on a monumental scale, standing 185cm high, her full attitude cannot in fact be understood from one fixed viewpoint, but must instead be appreciated by walking around, taking in the full majesty of her flowing robes. Chadwick is thus encouraging the viewer themselves to actively interact with her stately, commanding presence, as though bearing witness to her regal procession, by ironically having us do the walking. Cloaked Figure IX was acquired directly from the artist by the family of the present owner, and has been enjoyed in this private collection for many years. It has also been exhibited publicly, both with the Jerwood Foundation at Witley Court and Ragley, and also most recently among the rolling hills of Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Number one from the edition of six, its appearance on the market is an exciting opportunity to acquire a monumental example of Chadwick's work, which is of museum quality. We are grateful to the Artist's Estate for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.Photography © Jonty Wilde, courtesy of Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. It's this air one feels all around, which I experienced when going to the island of Aegina just before Easter, during Holy Week ... On the left is the church we'd go to, to listen to the twelve gospels, with the girl that stoops to kiss the bier of Christ.'1 Printemps revives the archetypal universe of an Ionian frieze. The architectural motifs that echo fragments of an ancient Greek temple or a neoclassical Athenian mansion, the shallow compositional depth, reminiscent of sculptural relief, and the austerity of the horizontal and vertical lines set up a perfectly balanced geometric edifice from which the human form emerges. The symbolic figure of the young woman, the loving embrace of the couple at the far right, the angel on the upper part, and the luminous patches of blue indicative of the sea and the clear skies, compose a symphony of poetic images, a universe of classical rhythm and human scale. Magnificent in its simple grandeur, this striking work echoes the timeless values of ancient Greek art.1 As quoted in Y. Spyros Vassiliou (Greek, 1902-1985)Festival, Athènes signé en grec (en bas à droite)technique mixte et feuille d'or sur panneau24 x 35cm (9 7/16 x 13 3/4in).signed in Greek (lower right)mixed media and gold leaf on boardFootnotes:ProvenanceA gift from the artist to a private collector circa 1960.Bonham's London, The Greek Sale, 1 April 2002, lot 78.Acquired from the above sale and thence by descent to the present owner.Athens celebrating the first Monday of Lent is one of Vassiliou's key subjects, considered to be the quintessence of his work and artistic vision. The Monday of Lent marks the passage from a secular period, that of carnival, to a more ascetic and contemplative one, the forty days before Easter. Through fasting people cleanse themselves of everyday mundane thoughts and contemplate matters of life and death, sacrifice and resurrection. This passage is made easier through the feast of the first day of Lent, which combines sadness with hope, yet with a certainty that hope will prevail. There is a definite Byzantine as well as surrealistic quality to this feast, both being captured by the artist. The city seems to float on a golden carpet. The street sellers with their colourful flowers or balloons, the old-time photographer, the horse carriages, the strolling figures are all carried away by the spirit of the day. The impressionistic diminutive pigments give a flickering, micrographic image of the city. Behind the dark mountain the golden Byzantine sky welcomes the kites, which fly free from their cords like birds. Vassiliou never stops being startled, he does not give up on the young child within him. He treasures memories of his youth and shares them with us as a remedy against oblivion. Even the lower part of the work resembles an old mirror that faded as the years went by. Considering the changes in the city's character, Vassiliou's works were almost prophetic. In 'Lights and Shades' he says about the demolition of old houses: '...the salvage remnants of the demolished house laid out on the pavement for sale, at least have something in them to remind us of the human pulse of a city that has lost forever its face and its soul'.Vassiliou creates an 'enchanted city' with face and soul, which accepts the inevitable with dignity. As Haris Kambouridis has noted: ' Vassiliou is a genuine creative artist who combines technical mastery, effective composition, inspirational flair and a talent for self-expression, qualities which have established him as one of the most important Greek artists of this century.' Nikolaos Gyzis (Greek, 1842-1901)Mère au berceau signé 'N. The painting is bathed in light which invades the scene from the left, highlighting the young mother and the child's cradle and making them glow with a shimmering luminescence. 'Gysis often used two kinds of lighting in his paintings: a general, diffuse lighting and a local one that highlighted the figures or objects he wanted to be particularly pronounced.'1 The generalised rendering, soft outlines and elimination of detail point to the artist's venture beyond the descriptive and the anecdotal and his ability to engage the viewer in the narrative by relying on purely pictorial means. Working within a subdued scale, Gysis suggests texture, space and atmosphere by subtle modulations of tone and intensity that demonstrate his amazing skill in the freer handling of form. Juxtaposing calmly handled surfaces to areas treated with swift, energetic brushstrokes, he simultaneously conveys a sense of reverence and cheerfulness, offering a genuine insight into the wonder of family and motherhood.'Praised like no other Modern Greek painter, Gysis, who lived and worked abroad, conveyed subjects of genuine Greek character, distinguished by vigorous palette in describing rural interiors, romantic disposition in relaying Greek traditions, familiarity and directness in portraying folk types and veiled nostalgia in capturing scenes of everyday life.'21 M. Verticals, horizontals, and diagonals are captured in a limited palette of festive tones and suspended upon a dark monochromatic background, transforming vague recollections of the natural world into a purely visual phenomenon. Cherished memories of pageants and country fairs are distilled into forms of great simplicity, carrying a resonance of grace and poetry and serving as a joyous paean to life and freedom. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Reduccion hecho por CONTRERAS, restaurador de la Alhambra...', 63 x 37.5cm excluding frame 2.5cm wideRafael Contreras Muñoz (1826-1890), the pre-eminent figure of the 19th century restoration of the Alhambra, was appointed its ‘restaurador adornista’ in 1847. As well as overseeing the works to the palace complex, he ran a workshop with his brother, Francisco Contreras Muñoz, producing models in a variety of media of the decoration found in the Nasrid buildings. These proved highly popular with early visitors, contributing to a spreading fashion for ‘Alhambrism’. In 1868 the travel writer H. Pemberton published the recommendation: ‘Señor Contreras has a studio which was well worth visiting; he has blocks of the Moorish work, exact copies, in miniature, of various parts of the Alhambra Palace, both plain and coloured. They vary in size from eight to twenty inches, and in price from ten to forty dollars. We brought one or two of them to England, thinking they would look well inserted in a wall’ (H. Pemberton, ‘A Winter Tour in Spain’, London, 1868, p.222). A larger gilded version of the same arch is displayed in the British Galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum (Room 125C, Accession No.REPRO.1890-52).

* Graves (Robert, 1895-1985). English novelist, poet and critic. Autograph Letter Signed, ‘Robert’, Callun, Deya, Mallorca Spain, 30 October 1945, to John [Aldridge] and [his wife] Lucie, regarding the cover design for his new novel Seven Days in New Crete, ‘… I think the design’s lovely and I’m ever so pleased that another of your covers will be on one of my books. Only one technical comment: the apple should be sliced horizontally, not vertically, to show the star in the middle formed by the core. Pictorial comment: I'd like a little more witch to show in proportion to goddess, who’s on a little too grand a scale proportionately…’, Graves further mentions the specifics of the design and details what the book is about, ‘…[It] is a Utopia novel which I finished just before we met in August: about a chap called Venn-Thomas who gets evoked by some magicians in the year A.D. ?? (only it is not A.D. because Christianity has ended) and finds himself in an anthropological paradise ruled by the girls on your design…’, then after explaining who the Goddess is, the second half of the letter deals with more practical matters, a few marks and ink spots including one large blot to lower right corner affecting a few words without loss of legibility, a few small nicks to right margin, 2 pages, small folioQTY: (1)NOTE:Seven Days in New Crete is a seminal future-utopian speculative fiction novel which shares many themes and ideas with Graves's The White Goddess, published in 1948. The dust jacket picture design referred to in the letter was done by the artist John Aldridge and used for the first UK edition published by Cassell in 1949. The first US edition was published simultaneously by Creative Age Press in New York but carried a different design and the alternative title, Watch the Northwind Rise.John Aldridge (1905-1983) was a British artist and designer closely associated with Graves. He had created designs for the dust jackets of several of Graves's books prior to this one, including his classic I Claudius (1934).
