JAMES B. A. 'JIMMY': (1915-2008) British Squadron Leader with the Royal Air Force. A Prisoner of War from 1940-45, James made numerous efforts to escape from various POW and Concentration Camps, most famously from Stalag Luft III in March 1944 as part of the 'Great Escape'. An extensive, complete archive of manuscripts, typescripts, notes, correspondence and research material relating to James's unpublished novel Wheel of Fire (or Teutonic Night) including many pages of manuscript and typed notes with various ideas, framework and structure plans, dating from the mid-1980s onwards, including James's notes on the inspiration behind the novel, 'What I'm trying to write is a novel based on a remarkable character I met in Sussex…..He styled himself Baron Waldemar Teck von Hohenstein from a 30,000 acre estate in East Prussia - was a Maj. Gen. on E. Front during war. He'd come to England immediately after the war, married an English actress, well known on the W. End stage pre-war…..My wife & I were living quite near him…..he liked company & seemed to like us so we went round quite often. He was then about 87 but as sharp as razor & as strong as an ox & he told us a fantastic story…..', typed biographical details ('Although Waldemar was on the fringes of the military resistance against Hitler he was never actively involved, although Count von Stauffenberg who planted the bomb on 20th July in the bunker at Rastenburg was his first cousin…..'), a few letters between James and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding the Baron's identity, as well as with the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry (whom the Baron had claimed to have been related to, the Duke responding to James that neither he or his mother have any recollection of the Baron, remarking 'if he had been my Godfather he must have been a fairly useless one!'), newspaper articles etc., various manuscript and typed versions of the novel, with extensive corrections, some in the hand of James's wife, Madge, including a final typed draft of over 200 pages as submitted to a publishing house, and a small file of correspondence between James and various agents and publishers including Curtis Brown Group Ltd., Faber & Faber Ltd., Harper Collins etc., each of them declining to publish the work, although some offering constructive advice, 'I passed your manuscript through to a colleague…..He was impressed with your historical knowledge and research but decided in the end that the book reads more like non-fiction than a novel……to succeed as a novel it would need to have more dramatic tension and narrative shape, showing the reader what is happening in the story rather than telling him…..'. The archive also includes a few unrelated manuscripts of short stories etc. by James, written whilst a member of a writer's group in Abergavenny, and the majority of James's notes and manuscripts are written on the back of large envelopes and miscellaneous correspondence to James. G to about VG, Qty Baron Waldemar Teck von Hohenstein (1899-1989) is buried in St. Saviour's Churchyard in the parish of Colgate and Roffey, Sussex. Although Jimmy James finally came to consider the Baron as a 'phoney' his life and experiences loosely formed the basis for the character of Gustav von Schwarzenburg in Wheel of Fire. 'The build up of German Forces on the Soviet Frontier in the Spring of 1941 was known to British Prisoers [sic] of War in Poland. Almost every day reports were smuggled into one Camp by the Polish Underground. These indicated tens of thousands of soldiers and vast quantities of weapons moving east…..Huge armies on the move with only one purpose. “Impossible” said the Senior British Officer to his Intelligence Officer, “They won't attack. How about the Nazi-Soviet non aggression pact?” “That was a cynical ploy by Hitler to gai[n] time, Sir”…..From this source and others the impending Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union became known in the West, and Churchill was able to warn Stalin quite well in advance……On 21 June 1941 Gustav's Regiment had received their orders and Gustave [sic] was giving his final briefing to his tank commanders outlining the vast scale of BARBAROSSA…..' NIGHTINGALE FLORENCE: (1820-1910) English Pioneer of modern Nursing. A fine A.L.S., Florence Nightingale, in ink, three pages, 8vo, Cleveland Row, St. James's, 23rd February 1863, to Dr. [William] Broadbent ('…or the Registrar of St. Mary's Hospital'), on mourning stationery. Nightingale commences her letter 'In following up my desire to improve the method of keeping Hospital Statistics, I have drawn up the enclosed Tables (no longer present) for operations' and continues to explain 'They are intended not only to register cases, but to enable results of particular operations to be better ascertained (statistically) than they are at present. I have had them tried on a large scale; and they have been found to answer every purpose'. Nightingale further expresses her intention to bring the subject before the Social Science Association at their next meeting, and adds 'But, in the mean time, I send a set, in the hope that, without the explanations then to be given, their usefulness will commend itself to you, so as to introduce them into St. Mary's Hospital'. A letter of good association and fine content for its illustration of Nightingale's pioneering methods and in particular her gift for the graphical representation of statistics. VG Sir William Broadbent (1835-1907) English Neurologist, a leading authority in the field of cardiology and neurology. Physician-Extraordinary to Queen Victoria and Physician-in-Ordinary to King Edward VII. Broadbent was associated with St. Mary's Hospital for most of his career, first taking a post there in 1859. It was through his work at the hospital that Broadbent gained his reputation as an expert pathologist and outstanding clinical teacher. Nightingale is noted for her pioneering statistical graphics, including the Nightingale rose diagram, and in 1859 had been elected as the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society.
WW2 Grouping of Private John Waimsley 1st Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with Hand Written Account of the Action in which he was Awarded the Military Medal for Saving a Wounded Comrade, Italy Campaign 1944, grouping consists of his Soldiers Service and Pay Book, Soldiers Release Book, Chorley town certificate of gratitude for war service, various wartime and post war documents and his original Field Message book with hand written notes and detailed description of his service and the action in which he was awarded the MM. The well written account gives in depth detail and his descriptive writing style captures the fear and true scale of the action, “To patrol objective DOG 23 men on patrol including Major Winn. We got within 5 yds of German Positions when A Coy patrol started a battle on objective Mouse on the right of our objective, on this battle starting Jerry stood to. Orders were given to me to attack the house which were occupied by Jerry Snipers or Suicide Squads. I gave out my orders for an attack, and then advanced towards the house, I peeped over the wall, and saw a Jerry in the second window up, he had is sights on me, I ducked and 3 or 4 bullets hit the wall above my head”. He goes on to describe “one of my men in my section Jock Hamilton had is leg hanging off, but I didn’t know until I came down the wall”. He mentions Major Winn’s Batman being shot in the head and killed, he describes the incident which gained him the MM as follows, “The Major told me to withdraw. I did and when I came down I saw Jock lieing there on his face. I asked the major if he was dead, he said no and then Jock said get me away from here, I got a rifle sling and fastened it round his waist, I left my Tommy gun and bren, and the major and I dragged him down the slope about 50 yards when a grenade came over, we ducked. We came across Maxwell who gave me a lift with Jock down to the main road where we came across L/C Logan, I got another rifle sling and fastened it round his ankles so that his right leg would not come off”. He later goes on to describe how sadly they had to leave Jock behind as they could not get his over the wall due to his wounds so they covered him over with a fly net. At the end of his account he states that he was awarded the MM along with Sgt Rawlinson and Major Winn received the MC. He goes onto give an account of an action on the Gothic line which is also well written and very descriptive. A very interesting grouping with a hand written account of an action from a private soldier which you so rarely see. The official citation for the Military Medal was as follows, “On 25 Aug 44 L/Cpl Walmsley was commanding a section in a patrol led by Major Winn in an attempt to reach the top of Fiesole Ridge. This feature is 400 meters high, and overlooks Florence from the N.E. When the patrol had got two thirds of the way up the hill the patrol came under heavy fire from enemy strong points. The patrol assaulted and wiped out two enemy Spandaus, L/Cpl Walmsley leading one of the assaulting sections with great dash. Owing to heavy casualties however, and the difficulties of the ground, which consisted of high terrace and walls, the patrol was unable to deal with the other strong points, and orders were given for it to withdraw. One of the wounded men was lying in a position swept by enemy machine gun fire. L/Cpl Walmsley, accompanied by Pte Maxwell, dashed to the wounded man, picked him up, and carried him some 200 yards down a precipitous slope negotiating a 12 foot wall en route. All the area was under Spandau fire, and the enemy were hurling grenades down the slope. L/Cpl Walmsley showed superb courage and devotion to duty in saving the wounded man, and throughout the day his fine leadership was an inspiration to his section”.
