This cork model of the temple (dating from 1st century BCE) was made towards the end of the 18th century. Cork models were made popular during the Grand Tour as they provided the traveller with an exact replica, light and small enough to take home. Curved cork boards were shaped and sculpted with exacting detail to create models to scale of the many Roman ruins; the porous nature of cork giving the impression of antiquity. Twigs and moss were used for soil and plants, and terracotta for reliefs and capitals. It is thought the architect Augusto Rosa created the first of the models. Following his death came Antonio Chichi (1743-1816) who produced probably the most famous cork models for sale to the grand tourists. Chichi is mentioned by many of his contemporary travellers including Goethe who referred to him in his 1786 diary, ‘Italian Journey’ The models were also used as teaching tools. There is a version of this model, together with many others, in the Sir John Soane Museum. It provided resources for those students who could not go on the Grand Tour and as a good substitute for teaching architecture. Models can also be found in the Victoria and Albert museum, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and in Berlin. There is a Chichi model of the temple in the Musée des Antiquités Nationales, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. This has some losses and damages

* JOSEPH DAVIE,HEROoil on canvas178.5cm x 150cmFramedNote: Joseph Davie was born in Glasgow in 1965. He studied at Glasgow School of Art during the 80's, when testosterone and figurative painting seemed to go hand in hand. What is so different about Davie is the subtlety and ambiguity of his work. Georgina Coburn (the freelance arts correspondent) has described his work as lyrical, enigmatic, edgy, dreamlike and compelling. She writes : ''Gently provocative Davie delights in the surreal juxtaposition of ideas and materials. The meeting of contradictory characters, cultures or visual elements such as colour, pattern or form, create intriguing dialogues in his work. Davie's wonderfully ambivalent zinc and copperplate etchings, watercolours, oils on canvas and mixed media works inspire an imaginative response. His whole approach to the figure is brilliantly subdued and refreshing. He conveys a sense of the monumental and iconic not through obvious physical scale but in terms of human aspiration.'' His work is in numerous public collections including Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, The Kelvingrove Museum, Historic Scotland and the BBC.
